Pedal sounds very "REAL" and organic.I have an older(92) randall pro tube 1000 head.its a nice warm full sounding and robust bottom end,but not enough distortion(is more plexi type of clean power) so am looking for a pedal that will make my amp sing with harmonic crush!..I like thin lizzy-Kiss-Ratt-UFO-shooting star etc...Preist...I did listen to a music store salesman testing one through and old bandmaster head.it sounded very versatile.somewhat fuzz to hard rock.though not like a fuzz pedal
Lots of people have that opinion of this pedal. This is especially true if you are coming from other OD pedals like Boss, Marshall etc.. This pedal tries to recreate the tube distortion sound of old British amps like 60's/70's marshall/vox sound. For that it is quite convincing but can indeed sound weak and underhwelming compared to the thick, scooped compressed sound of modern metal guitar. Dont get this if thats what you want.

Chip, tube, transistor or processor, it's just one more distortion pedal! They all sound so damn similar these days I don't see any glory in one over another.
This pedal is ripe for modding. I revoiced the pedal which was easy to do and it sounds MUCH better. The biggest problem is the treble knob is horrid. Either keep it on zero or shift its bandwidth way, way up into the presence range. I'm surprised there is not a Muffn modders website. These pedals are cheap, well made, easy to work on and ALL TUBE, and HIGH VOLTAGE too!
Yes I have great results stacking this pedal with others. Sometimes I run it into my zvex box of rock which turns the muffn into a sort of tube fuzz face sound. Otherwise my modded muffn is early classic rock in a box; zeppelin, cream, mountain, etc. and with all the gain and sustain you could want!
Rolling treble from the guitar would not be the same as keeping the treble pot on zero. The tone stack on this pedal is after the distortion and interacts with the rest of the circuit massively. So treble cut in front of this box with its treble pot on would probably just sound like dull crap on top of chopped up razor blades
No, it has its own 16 volt AC that is boosted to around 280 V internally by a torroidal transformer inside. This box is a full blown high voltage tube preamp.
@mKreifeldt Hey,I too was disappointed with the treble control.I've been discussing it in the EHX forum.A admin made good pot type and value suggestions.I will be transferring the info to the "free stomp box .org" website where theres already a couple of BM threads.
Love this box Am using it into a fender twin that I mod my self with the help of Gerald Weber. It is a very flex able unit. Thanks for posting your video.
Im sold on it.. though I only have a pf15r practice solid state vox at the moment. Im going to leave the amp clean and let this be my preamp and see what's what. It will work until I get a tube amp
i imagine this pedal would work really well as a booster. great overdrive on it's own, kinda like a better version of a tubescreamer, with more gain and better mids...
that's possibly the best decision you could make. I spent a year with a DS-1, and everything changed the day I bought this pedal. It makes any amp sing and works perfectly with every guitar I've ever played through it.
It's totally worth it. From soft and to thick and fat, man...I can't say enough good things about this pedal.
I got one in mint condition for $100...total steal. Try craigslist vs. ebay. Local deals are usually much cheaper, and you can pick it up the same day.
This pedal really isn't aimed at metal players as it comes with 2 X 12AY7 tubes which are better for a classic creamy British overdrive i.e. Cream/The Who/The Kinks. However, if you want more gain, change the tubes to 12AX7's and you'll get more of a Plexi sound.
It's a great pedal at gig volume, had mine running through an Orange Rockerverb 50 and it kicked considerable rear end!!.
TravuhsWree is obviously as blind as he/she is retarded. If you actually use your eyes you'll see that both tubes say 12AY7 on them, as confirmed on the Electo Harmonix website. Dumbass!.
these are great man but the high knob is a harsh buzz control, I keep mine off usually or below 8oclock
