@mpigsley77 Because it's the same principle as using a rack. you want to EQ the compressed frequencies. not the other way round. I only just discovered this a few months ago myself.
@youcompletelyfail I can see instances when you would use it both ways. Compression increases the lows and decreases the highs which could potentially make it difficult to eq out certain parts. BUT with that being said if you have it the other way around your eq is a little bit more true because the compressor isn't going to be altering the eq that is on the track. I could see an arguement for an eq before and after the compression. EQ before to cut frequencies and eq after to boost others.
Yo Mitch, say I'm mixing the loudest portion of my song and I've got about 95% of it at around the 2.5 db range, but then, every so often, it peaks out at like 0.5 on a snare/kick hit. Right afterwards, the output goes back to the 2.5 range. Is this a problem I should be worried about? If so, what would your move be? I'm working with all software instruments with the same velocities btw. As always, thanks for being a BAUSS.
@dudemanbro986 I would probably take down that snare.. but I if you really like the volume that that snare is at then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Maybe try kicking the volume of everything down just a tad.
@mpigsley77 what do you mean two takes and panned them together? I want to do this on my recording you see, can you just go in a little more detail please? Thanks :)
@nav34d The person recorded the track twice, so they have two separate tracks that sound about the same, then used the pan control to pan one to the right and one to the left.
@mpigsley77 Lol Yeah. That's actually kind of a cool idea, I might try that on one of my songs. But thanks a lot for the tutorial man, it really helped.
@nav34d Yeah. Have the vocalist record two of the exact same takes on the 'chorus' or wherever you want. Then take one of the tracks and pan it to the left and take the other track and pan it to the right. If you vocalist is good then this should sound close to what you wanted in the video.
I will mix/master anyone's rap/hip-hop songs for $10 ea.. Email me for details and check out my channel to see what my stuff sounds like. Thumbs up to help me out ;) Thanks !
I notice that in your 'snare 2' track you have it boosted on the EQ to 7.5 and 10 dB in 2 different places but the fader on your track is at -17. Would you not be better off boosting to no more than 2-3 dB on your EQ???
@walshb9420 The eq on that track was probably boosted too high at those two point as I'm looking back but it shouldn't matter. You shouldn't look at the eq boost and the volume fader in those terms. They should be separate from each other. EQ properly... then adjust volume. Don't go back and analyze these two together as one
also yea with reverb's and delay's is best you put em on a aux track so you can send out any of ur insrtruments to that reverb/delay track..
also people if you wonder why you cannot fade Logic loops. you have to bounce the loop as an audio file and bring it back into logic then you can fade :):)
with how u hav ur drums you have 5 ultrabeats lol .what you wana do is use one ultrabeat then inside ultrabeat withyour samples loaded instead of them going out to "main" you select 17/18/19/20 and so on.then make 8 mono auxliary tracks and select input of each and it will show the ultrabeat under like "inst1" etc then select 17/18 and so on,on each of the aux tracks so you can use one ultrabeat with say 8 drum samples all sent out to 8 separate aux channels to work wit
Can you share your thoughts about the order of inserts? I notice you have the compression before the reverb. I've seen some peeps use compression after the reverb. Whats your take on it?
@Crbrinkl I have always been one to set up eq and then compression at the beginning. Reverb (and delay), to me, is just something added to the final sound. If you add before compression the reverb and actual sound wouldn't line up perfectly. I hope I am making sense cause this all sounds so good in my head.
@Crbrinkl The problem with that is then the reverb is compressed too, so it doesn't fade away and "sparkle" like it's supposed to. I did it on accident one time for vocals and it sounded terrible. (Not that it can't ever sound good.) I think the studio standard way to do it, and the way I have found sounds the best, is to use sends to a designated reverb aux channel.
that was awesome, much more fun to watch than the other tutorials. Especially the part at the end about leaving comments:) Also, i have composed lots sonic arts and you are RIGHT about music being more powerful when there are vocals in it.
I have another question regarding fade outs. I've been trying to do fade outs of each track using the fade tool, but it only lets me do it to one or two tracks. Then it doesn't work. And it doesn't work on the drum loop track. ????
I just started using this software and I have to say that your tutorial was very helpful. The best I've seen. Been confused about the best way to produce a good quality recording. When I have a good mix, so I think, I bounce all my tracks to one so I can do a fade in or out. then bounce it again as a mp3, m4, or whatever, and open it in itunes. Problems with volume reduction. Any thoughts? Thanks again!!!
Dam you sound smug

hey could i use the multiprocessor instead of the normal compressor? or can/should i use both?.. for software instruments.
erayze11 2 weeks ago
@erayze11 totally up to you. If you know how to use the multipressor then go for it. The signal just needs to be compressed!

never put EQ before compression. Always Compression first.

200 hz snare? Limiting on every track? You're definitely a better mixer than me if you can still isolate every band on final mix.

jaspercummings85 5 months ago
@jaspercummings85 sadly fade ins and fade outs only work with audio. You will have to take advantage of the automation section in logic. It blows
mpigsley77 5 months ago
@mpigsley77 You can also bounce the selected track , and afterwards you can fade it the way you want it .

@jaspercummings85 make sure that you uncheck the box that says normalize. This would explain a volume reduction.
