  • first time? somehow, i am left doubting this was your very first time. if it really was, well, i'm very impressed. what i admire more, is not only do you cut well, but you use all other techniques necessary. (wiping the blade, sheathing the blade) it shows respect and honor on your part. that my friend, is something to cherish.

  • wow your forms not bad for your first time, and your self taught? thats not bad at all keep up the training.

  • Lenny! Could you post a full comparison of the two blades you used here? I'm looking into buying the Thaitsuki Nihonto Sokueto and was wondering how it compares to the Chen blade.

  • Would you say this is a better sword compared to the Tiger elite katana, taking into account the cutting power, balance, maneouvrability and durability? because the tiger elite katana is a bit more expensive than the Tori XL so i thought i would ask :P

  • skill knows no color. Keep up the good work and continue to define your individualized techniques my friend!

  • I love this video. Don't let the mistakes in technique cloud your path, your focus and respect is superb, and with focus and respect so carefully maintained, you will only improve. Most of the cuts looked clean, without too many turns in the blade on the stroke. Watch out for the low cuts, as the arm has a natural tendency to rotate and can fold the edge (roll over). Get another mat/shaft instead of going for the bottom bit, OR lower your center instead of the blade tip.

  • Very interesting. Do you, by chance, study Toyama Ryu?

A couple of time you seemed to have lost your focus and your technique suffered immediately because of it. A hard lesson for all of us to learn. Thank you for leaving that in the video.

I'm not sure which of the two swords you used first (the white one), but it seemed to me that it's not quite as sharp as the second sword. Perhaps a polish is in order.

    Take care,

    Osu

    Ed

  • @fastedge ed, nope. never studied Toyama. taught myself what i do. whatever you saw wasnt a dull blade. just my skill. it wasonly my 2nd time or so cutting.

  • @lennybruce8 oops. this video was my first time cutting.

  • @lennybruce8 Alway a good choice filming cut and such. It help a lot later on. And your channel is superp.

  • @lennybruce8

Oh, wow. Then I am impressed with your precision. I think that Toyama Ryu would be a good fit for you looking at your natural style. If you have the wherewithal, take a look at it. I think you would be pleased.

    Take care,

    Ed

  • impressive

  • @5tillWaitin was my first try. looking back i see so many mistakes. but thanks.

  • @lennybruce8 what are these mistakes? (so i can learn)

  • nice video you control thoes cut well i drink green tea to your health i bow

  • I have to say, nice work. I love the filming, editing and music choice as well.

  • Very beautiful cutting, No waisted movement, and your knowledge of the fundamental basics is very evident. Many people forget that more of the power in cutting comes form relaxing the arms and using the hips. Very Beautiful keep up the excellent work

  • Some beautiful cutting there, i remember my first cut, it was about a year ago and it went well, however you did better than i did. lovely video, please keep em coming. matt (bow)

  • Very well made video, man. You're a true artist. Some of these cutting tests on youtube are unbearable to watch due to the shoddy camera work or the thrash metal playing in the background, but this video was none too long.

  • This is a very enjoyable video to watch. I really like the music with the cutting as well. Please make many more of these types of videos.

  • Well done sir! A good video and some great cutting. I am impressed as well by your cut at 6:52 and at (roughly) 5:40ish. Keep up your practice, you're doing well!

  • try cutting the moment you draw , then you are truely skilled for now not bad but a lot of work is needed .

  • thank you for the enlightened stalking.

  • You managed a near perfect cut at 6:52 :O

    i am impressed sir.

  • thanks, however my skill is quite low. appreciate the compliment.

  • Yes it takes LOTS of practice, study and technique building to really get it down. But you are definitely on your way

  • is it good to wipe the sword after cutting doesn't that remove the needed oil

  • the problem is water while cutting these targets. not oil.

  • pretty good man, nice vid

  • Very nice cuts. Great Zanshin. How do you like the Hondachi? I was thinking about looking into it for my next shinken, but i have been holding off.

  • i like the hondachi.

however my friend has nother thaitsuki. i forget which one. i think its the one 'below' the hondachi. his tsuka ito is loose. mine is tight. but his isnt. but he purchased that over a year ago. mine is newer. so maybe they are improving each year. personally i really like the blade on the hondachi. but i'm not an expert.

  • Thanks for the info, i'll keep it in mind. I am not an expert on blades either, just a martial artist. So being a practitioner I like to hear from other martial artists rather than sword reviewers. By the way, what Ryuha are you with?

  • Where did u get the bamboo??

  • Nice video and i like it in HD

  • I Enjoyed That.......Thank You....

  • Very calm cutting, with good zanshin and metski.

    A pleasure to watch.

    Thanks.

  • thank you.

  • What is the music? Great Vid!

  • its korean, and i cant remember now........hmmm.

i think the title is 1st kayagum.

    its buried in my collection.

  • Wow, you sir are good. I stumbled upon this video and i wasnt sure i would watch the whole thing when i saw how long it was. But once it started I couldnt take my eyes off it. I have almost a bamboo forest on the side of my house from the previous owner and I have been slowly taking it out with a machete so i can really apreciate when you slice the bamboo poles with such ease and presicion. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for posting it. My favorite part was 8:40 to the end.

  • my sword wasnt in any danger from that stand tipping over. not sure how you gonna bend a sword that way unless you have a death grip on the sword and try to hold the tipping mat over. but that tipped in such a way that there was no problem because my sword was disengaged before the fall.

  • You have a lovely space to practice. I think your accuracy is much better than mine. You may find it easier to build a little more tip speed by reaching out a bit more and on tsuki to avoid pulling the stand over move your body back but leave the sword stationary then with one sharp move pull back and up slightly.

  • thanks. mostly it fell because of the nature of the stand. its not weight down at all and the peg is short. that sword was through the mat. not a big deal to me that it fell. i got too many other things to worry about. lol

  • I've just seen falling stands bend swords and bust up handles

  • is that a thaitsuki katana?

  • Thank you very much for the demonstration; it is near impossible to find a video in regards to the Sokueto Hondachi, my personal favorite of the entire Thaitsuki line (that I can find; but it's so rare to find a katana with white tsuka-ito that that's not likely to change). Exemplary cutting skills.

  • Cool video!

  • good, thank you for sharing.

  • thank you.

  • Sweet video. This is what cutting tatame is about in my humble opinion.

  • thank you. yes..without concentration or zanshin everything is empty.

  • Great video, loved it, good technique, beautiful setting and good editing all make an enjoyable clip...keep em coming!

  • thanks for the compliment though i can't agree its such great technique. thank you though. ^^

  • man that was a really good video!

    thanks!

  • thanks brother

  • You cutting speed was just fine! I enjoyed it, just like all your other videos! Keep them coming! Peace.

  • thanks for the kindness.

  • The world would be a better place if we all practiced the Way of Kindness. Peace.

  • I like the cloth you keep in your keikogi, that's a brilliant idea. Sweet cuts on the take, I haven't the balls to try that just yet.

Those XL blades... they just chew everything up! I feel like I'm cheating when I use mine on mats.

  • ah..the take wasnt as hard as i thought it was. i was intimidated until i actually cut it.

  • nice vid thanks for sharing

  • youre welcome.

  • I like the Do cuts, but all cuts my brother are perfect. I will have to up load a video of some of my cutting for you (and others) when I learn how to do that. I almost purchased that same stand, it looks like the one made by "Musashi" but Ifound blue prints on line through Bugei and made my own. If you made your own then please pardon me. I have yet to cut take, pefect cuts and tsuki. If there were 10 stars to give, you have it from me.

    Domo Arrigatto

    Mu Shin

  • ah its the musashi one. it works. i didnt weight it down because i wanted to see if my cuts were fast enough. i thought if it wasnt weighted then it would show my slow techinque a little more. but thanks.

  • I do the same thing when I cut, also using 1/2 mats as I think they show technique flaws better. Again, great cutting! Peace.

  • Brother that was excellent, wonderful feeling from the whole video. The inner fragility of harmony at work.

  • thanks for watching and commenting brother. glad you enjoyed it.

  • Really nice! and great quality vid! 5stars ;)

  • thank you for the kindness.

  • Excellent first time cutting. Love the close up, and the noto at the end.

  • thanks my brother.

  • loved this vis

  • thank you brother.
