Since ANYONE can get a hold of any recording software and whip up anything they want if they have a few hundred bucks and a computer, you've got a TON of bands just shelling out faceless, mindless drivel that serves no purpose to listeners. Its just there, taking up space. And thats how indie music is; sure theres variety, but theres no filter...so you're STILL getting mostly crap to sift through anyways. So why should the record industry be shunned if the end result is the same?
As evil as the record industry is known for being, which is true to a degree--it has one good purpose: Its stands as a sonic barrier between professional and bootleg drivel. @Nelly305ful You are, unless you have good marketing (provided you aren't going the major label route) and you need to know your own business route. Gone are the days of the musician that can be head in the clouds. If you go Indy, you better learn to wear a loooot of shoes because youre alone in your success unless you have the money to hire someone who's educated enough to handle your booking, promotion and financing in a successful manner.
Sound Slave you are brain dead. Too many artists made records with one or two good songs and you had to buy the whole lousy LP to get two good songs. THAT's a good system to you? Dumb...
that's how you weed out the bad artists. good artists have albums that are good from beginning to end. i've never understood why anyone would want to listen to an artist if they only like one song and are disinterested in the rest of their music
The music industry is dead. I love Hip-hop but no one can rap. Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, and that shiity Waka Flocka are making money for doing nothing. Rock has lost a lot of popularit over the years. And pop music is full of ppl like Justin Beiber, Gaga, and Perry among other untalented slut icons. Music is dead. But in 20 years, I wouldn't be suprised if independent music becomes the norm. All the electronic stuff are gonna kill the music industry and around 2015 or 2020, we'll find out.
At the least they are being proactive. As for WMG having better acts, would that stop you from downloading their songs. I mean a great band gets signed to Warner so your happy right? So you stop downloading music for free because it's good music. In the case that you do not stop downloading on a large scale of illegal downloads the 'great' band get dropped because of low sales. Just a thought.
I don't hate it when people download music for free. But it's very pathetic that many music pop fans desperately want to download leak songs/albums from any pop artists 2 weeks before its release date. What is this world coming to?
Downloading songs will only lead to less and less songs in the future. So you guys can download all you want. But then again, music is crap nowadays so......
Ever since the 80's(start of the MTV era) we have been giving them money (corporate a-holes and so called artists) now that this is the era where we can control what we wanna hear. its so funny, warner started to hire geeks now. lol
You can't compete with free, there is nothing better in the world than free so R.I.P. Music Industries.
I'm glad this is happening. The music industry has done some really shitty things to the innocent people. The Jew with the glasses and beard in this video is a money grubbing asshole. Surprise surprise. Musicians should be smarter like that "Bare Naked Ladies" band. I pay money to see my favorite bands in concert.
@Viktir666 I find it ironic how this segment came out in 2007 when Warner made plans on making their label's music a lot better, but since then, their music has gotten worse and worse up until this point (2010) LOL!!!!!
Say what you want, record stores are sorely missed. I used to live across the street from a Tower Records when I was in college in Washington, DC, and it was a part of my life as much as school was. It is sad to see music stores gone from our daily lives. I blame no one else but the industry themselves. When you price a CD $23.99, I don't care how good the album is, you will lose the core group of buyers. Tower, Virgin, all gone. Never would have imagined that day would come.
@soul4sins Tower Records gave me a reason to purchase music without getting it for free because you were able to find any classic album you desired and get it at a fair price. And now because of companies like Wal-Mart & Target, you're mainly going to find all the current crap on their shelves because once an album becomes outdated because of low sales, it's removed from the shelves.
Let the industry crumble...I remember slipknots first two albums, self-titled and iowa, I must have bought those two albums atleast 7 times each because of how awesome every song on the album was, the songs were written for slipknot, not the masses, when they got mainstream and started writing for the masses, their songs lost all their value...Shame on them, sell outs...
May I use your video, "music industry suffering of lack of cd sales" for my school project? I assure you that it will not be used for commercial purposes in any way, shape or form.
Seems to me an independant musician makes music exactly the way he wants and then tries to sell it, but a big label looks at what sells and then makes that.
Downloading is like a silent protest against the greedy music industry. I remember how excited and amazed I was when I first saw it was possible to download music. It was a gift from heaven. It felt like the industry paid as something back for all the money we spend on their shit. I mean 20 dollar (about 45 euro) for a cd??? And 7 dolla (15 euro) for a single? No way. Buy cheap (old) cd's from amazon and go independent.
companies like sony and warner went into the business and broke the art and made it into what is the crap on the radios today....... I am sad for us musicians but glad that the 'greedy music industry' is suffering.
iTS ALL PRE-DESTINED ALL COMPANIES ARE UNDER ONE UMBRELLA.tHESE PEEPS ARE 20YRS AHEAD OF US WITH THEIR PLANS.SIGNED ARTISTS ARE PAWNS THERE TO PROTECT KING/QUEEN AND BE SACRIFIED WHEN NON-PRODUCTIVE.JUST MAKE YOUR OWN MUSIC AND SELL IT YOURSELF
Ditto! it is true that we can get music from the net. I like both. I will buy a CD in the store if they have it or go online & if I can't find it. If the music is good enough we will buy it. We have shared music from back in the day. Nothing has changed on that. The music bizz peeps just don't like that we can do it more often now.
Why punish us for telling a friend about a group we like? I made a friend some cds. Some songs she had never heard. Now is a fan. We are gonig 2 one of the concerts. We are making plans 2 get 2 more concerts coming up. I bought two dvds & other stuff from the group Tears For Fears. Just saw them in concert this summer. BTW they were AWESOME! They souned and looked great live. My friend & I r going 2 Jason Mraz & Rob Thomas concerts. I have some of their cds too. Good music sells, nuff said!!!
good post. thx. in many ways this can be thought of as karma but keep in mind that the barenaked laduies had a following before they decided to go it alone. it would be tough for a new artist to go D.I.Y. without major distribution and expect to make real money.
i like how he say, so and so is the frontman, and little kevin over there plays keyboard. ha, this band still sounds like every other commercial music group.
at 8:40-9:11 the guy totally half answered the question if artists can make it on their own without the major label. They don't have to get on itunes front page or to the cell phone companies, they just need to get out there. Which isn't a problem if you have an internet connection. They could even build their own website without a problem. Most of the music today by major labels is bullshit who wants to pay for crap? I don't, so I don't. Can't beat getting an album months before release.
it is usually copyrighted content so technically not really ''free''.
Plus it did not appear overnight from the blue, somebody has to produce it.
Hey kids, interested in getting QUALITY music? Why not pay for it, if it's not ripping you off? Why should music be like free but you pay for everything else?
I mean: the business is crap, but the people have gone stupid also.
if the music industry isn't bright enough to realize that people don't need cds anymore and its all gone digital & punish people who advanced the new way of media distribution that there only too happy to hijack and call their own then they must suffer the consequences of not changing with the customers needs.
thats business give us what we want or we'll go elsewhere & we have.
and to call people criminal for sharing free content for non-profit use is ridiculous.
major labels can fuck off and die and the world will be a better place. the scam is up, these industry ppl will need to search whats left of their souls and find some real talent like the artists they exploit.
Warner's lost their flippin minds if they think someone's gonna be dumb enough to agree to give them a cut of their tours, endorsement and merchandise. Asking for crap like that is just gonna drive more artists away from traditional labels.
major labels are mostly money driven in my opinion, any rubbish thats a little catchy and has booty shaking will do right?! create a stale mcdonals like process that people will buy into because sex and mediocricy sells and your rolling in it, thats my idea of what the 00's has been like fro, well done music industry! pat yourselves on the back people, thats why people download and use facebook etc to get away from you guys
that way more people will buy albums by artists who are not just singles orientated but music orientated like in the 60's and 70's, try and portray the image that a hardcopy with artwork is more exciting to a customer then an mp3 file is, we all know this decade of the 00's has been horrible in terms of mainstream and radio, its a joke as you hear the same cheesy songs being every hour and im at work and cant change the station to some local indie or small budget station with variety
the mainstream was tolerable in the 90's up until around 96-97', lots of good bands were getting airplay, now days its cheesy r&b and a handful of bands that look great but arnt really about the music, why arnt the shins, libertines, radiohead, the strokes, darkness, spoon, arcade fire all over the radio, showcase qaulity instead of quantity and maybe the industry will gain some respect, stop breeding and influencing mediocrity to the public
in the words of Bob Dylan: Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is Rapidly agin'. Please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin'.
There was music before the RIAA there will be music after the RIAA. I don't understand why everyone feels sry for the people that capitalize on other peoples talent. Thank God there is no PIAA for the painters or WIAA for writers. Capital and art should never be used in the same sentence, cause although people make livings doing it; it should never be the reason to create art, and frankly it has gotten a$inine, Artist in other art forms rarely have huge mansions and their own Plane.
The illegal AND legal downloads markets have killed CD sales. I don't like that. Now any retard can make a song and get famous - it was much better when artists had to work and produce a whole album of good music. It was a type of quality control. Now we get wall to wall crap.
@soundslave lol, a WHOLE album of good music? Thanks to these industry fucks, you MIGHT get 2 good songs on a CD, with a bunch of bullshit filler added in. Digitally, you don't have to pay a high price for all the crappy songs you don't like anyway.....just pay on a song-by-song basis.
It's easy to understand why the music industry suffers. The music executives in the 60's and 70's were old sigar-smoking men who didn't know shit about pop-music and realeased things people wanted to hear. Now there is all these young people who only puts out the music they like, and think other people like. And now as the cd-sales decline they put out "easy listening" songs and hip-hop that is excellent to use as ringtones. But piracy can be blamed also to some extent.
what do u mean to some extent's have u ever talked to the youth I barely know anyone that buys their music, they all think they have some devine right to steal ppl's work
The looser is gonna be those 4 major labels. First off..they think they can fool people with easy melodies and lyrics which a five yr old can remember after one take. The power is going to independent labels and the artist mainly, because they are more #######..ok am not giving more secrets:)Pay me.hahaha
i aint gonna lie.. i download my music..and i hate the music industry and most mainstream rappers.. its like they put a good beat and bullshit lyrics.lyrics dat really dont send out a message..thats why i only buy underground mixtapes and cd's and 90's music like az,pun,nas.etc.. i miss the 90's
And they still wonder why? Cd prices were getting so ridicously high that the mp3 was needed. And yes i was more relieved then anything else. I still buy my cd's but from amazon. I mean 15 euro's for a 3-song cd-single, 22 euro's for a cd? No. It's also sad how commercial stuff sells and the best underground music doesn't sell because it's not marketed right. For instance in '98 Gangstarr's Moment of truth, a classic, barely sold 50.000 in USA, black eyed peas sells couple milllion. It's sad.
to summarise, the wrong people are running the major labels, i believe the interview process should be targeted for people with a background in marketing along with a knowledge of great music otherwise go look for another job ..
With programs like limewire music is basicly free nowadays. since people want everything free including myself CDs are out of the picture. I haven't bought a cd since 2001 because of limewire.
Stop repeating the same songs on radio, i swear thes corporations are run by monkeys, start taking more risks ... the 90's at the very least plugged some great bands as well as some of the cheese, a mix of both ..people are getting bored of the bland music being promoted another reason why sales are down and people download to find better music
Start! selling art instead of an agenda, go watch some tony wilson videos, he started a label and was passionate about great music and creativity, I'll continue to steal music as a middle finger to the industry and i'll buy the albums i really want as a fan of music ... the industry's reputations is as bad as you could imagine because it seems to be run by brainless uneducated money grubbers
Its not about the music, its about being safe and promoting cheese, good riddance to the corporate executives that continue to plug Akon, overly-commercial R&B with no message, they dont care about art or music, its about the mula, they will only regain respect by doing a 360 and promoting art, respect to great artists will warrant respect by the fans and perhaps bringing down the price of Albums
Because Radio and music tv plug bland music, kids should be listening to new order, grizzly bear, radiohead, primal scream, the shins, mars volta, the pipettes, if you want rock the darkness, queens of the stone age, kings of leon, creative music not the rubbish they play now days ..good riddance to the music industry i say! they need an overhaul
very entertaining!!!! this is a great point for talented artist to get out to the masses. its a shit point in a sense because everyone is now an artist and talent is now harder to come out and shine. 2 many roaches for 1 peice of bread
'an essential guide for serious singers and musicians. this book reveals what really goes on inside the music industry and bold enough to speak out against it. It also points out that you can make it big time without the music industry and most books don't tell you this! This book you can buy on Amazon uk
Everything that this video is about came, went and died already. While the "marketing" teams of majors talk the talk, new SMT's are kicking ass and they don't have a clue! MORONS!
You're an idiot if you think that will make you more money one day. What's a better deal, ten bucks for an album that you can go to your local walmart or record store to buy, or $ 50 for a ticket to a concert that might not come to someone's town. Whichh sound's more appealing to the consumer? Hmmmmm
Well let's say artists get about 50 cents from every cd sale. Now when they sell one song from i-tunes. How much money well they get? 0.01 cents? Maybe selling cd's isn't so bad at all for the musician.
As a struggling musician, I think that it's time to put serious laws against filesharing. It's killing the music industry, and screwing tthe artists over.
the music industry has robbed even their own artists for so long, and at the end of the day they were fkn broke and everything gone. while you wrangle around in binding contracts. a cd sells for 17.00 and the artist get 60-70 cents. where did the rest go? into your pocket.(Not literally). You had your fun, now its my turn.i can get any album or movie i want free of charge ha ha ha!
Shoutout to "Shorty The President". The new cyber robinhood.and there's 500 others where he came from. Biches.
the music industry has fucked us for so long, Its our turn. 100 million people in this country, all it takes is one person to buy an album and put it on limewire or kazza. its a wrap!. You fuckers have been living lavishly off us for too long and been dictating to us how we should spend our money for toooo long. Noiw you dont get NO money. Get ready to sell your mansion in the hills. You selfich, greedy bastards who have destroyed even the lives of your own artists. Karma is a mother....

They don't know that MP3 is not as good as CDs! The MUSIC INDUSTRY do a poor shit job so far on EDUCATING them!

Warner's lost their flippin minds if they think someone's gonna be dumb enough to agree to give them a cut of their tours, endorsement and merchandise. Asking for crap like that is just gonna drive more artists away from traditional labels.
Paradise2003 2 years ago
major labels are mostly money driven in my opinion, any rubbish thats a little catchy and has booty shaking will do right?! create a stale mcdonals like process that people will buy into because sex and mediocricy sells and your rolling in it, thats my idea of what the 00's has been like fro, well done music industry! pat yourselves on the back people, thats why people download and use facebook etc to get away from you guys
2brave2handle 3 years ago
that way more people will buy albums by artists who are not just singles orientated but music orientated like in the 60's and 70's, try and portray the image that a hardcopy with artwork is more exciting to a customer then an mp3 file is, we all know this decade of the 00's has been horrible in terms of mainstream and radio, its a joke as you hear the same cheesy songs being every hour and im at work and cant change the station to some local indie or small budget station with variety
2brave2handle 3 years ago
the mainstream was tolerable in the 90's up until around 96-97', lots of good bands were getting airplay, now days its cheesy r&b and a handful of bands that look great but arnt really about the music, why arnt the shins, libertines, radiohead, the strokes, darkness, spoon, arcade fire all over the radio, showcase qaulity instead of quantity and maybe the industry will gain some respect, stop breeding and influencing mediocrity to the public

Now we get wall to wall crap.
soundslave 3 years ago 12
@soundslave lol, a WHOLE album of good music? Thanks to these industry fucks, you MIGHT get 2 good songs on a CD, with a bunch of bullshit filler added in. Digitally, you don't have to pay a high price for all the crappy songs you don't like anyway.....just pay on a song-by-song basis.

Music industry morons. Can't even figure out there own game because the bigheads went to school to learn everything they know.hahahaha.

The power is going to independent labels and the artist mainly, because they are more #######..ok am not giving more secrets:)Pay me.hahaha
youaintharmingme 3 years ago
i aint gonna lie.. i download my music..and i hate the music industry and most mainstream rappers.. its like they put a good beat and bullshit lyrics.lyrics dat really dont send out a message..thats why i only buy underground mixtapes and cd's and 90's music like az,pun,nas.etc.. i miss the 90's
szebsone 3 years ago
for decades the record industry overcharged for their cd's,now it's payback time with the advent of free downloads.

Yeah i bet your music gets a lot more attention on the net then in the store. A lot more chance of sales too. The net's a blessing for the industry.
royalsteven 3 years ago
And they still wonder why? Cd prices were getting so ridicously high that the mp3 was needed. And yes i was more relieved then anything else. I still buy my cd's but from amazon. I mean 15 euro's for a 3-song cd-single, 22 euro's for a cd? No. It's also sad how commercial stuff sells and the best underground music doesn't sell because it's not marketed right. For instance in '98 Gangstarr's Moment of truth, a classic, barely sold 50.000 in USA, black eyed peas sells couple milllion. It's sad.
royalsteven 3 years ago
to summarise, the wrong people are running the major labels, i believe the interview process should be targeted for people with a background in marketing along with a knowledge of great music otherwise go look for another job ..
2brave2handle 3 years ago
With programs like limewire music is basicly free nowadays. since people want everything free including myself CDs are out of the picture. I haven't bought a cd since 2001 because of limewire.
SpokenwerD405 3 years ago
Stop repeating the same songs on radio, i swear thes corporations are run by monkeys, start taking more risks ... the 90's at the very least plugged some great bands as well as some of the cheese, a mix of both ..people are getting bored of the bland music being promoted another reason why sales are down and people download to find better music
2brave2handle 3 years ago 3
Start! selling art instead of an agenda, go watch some tony wilson videos, he started a label and was passionate about great music and creativity, I'll continue to steal music as a middle finger to the industry and i'll buy the albums i really want as a fan of music ... the industry's reputations is as bad as you could imagine because it seems to be run by brainless uneducated money grubbers
2brave2handle 3 years ago
good point
SpokenwerD405 3 years ago
Its not about the music, its about being safe and promoting cheese, good riddance to the corporate executives that continue to plug Akon, overly-commercial R&B with no message, they dont care about art or music, its about the mula, they will only regain respect by doing a 360 and promoting art, respect to great artists will warrant respect by the fans and perhaps bringing down the price of Albums
2brave2handle 3 years ago 3
Because Radio and music tv plug bland music, kids should be listening to new order, grizzly bear, radiohead, primal scream, the shins, mars volta, the pipettes, if you want rock the darkness, queens of the stone age, kings of leon, creative music not the rubbish they play now days ..good riddance to the music industry i say! they need an overhaul
2brave2handle 3 years ago
very entertaining!!!! this is a great point for talented artist to get out to the masses. its a shit point in a sense because everyone is now an artist and talent is now harder to come out and shine. 2 many roaches for 1 peice of bread

'an essential guide for serious singers and musicians. this book reveals what really goes on inside the music industry and bold enough to speak out against it. It also points out that you can make it big time without the music industry and most books don't tell you this! This book you can buy on Amazon uk

You're an idiot if you think that will make you more money one day. What's a better deal, ten bucks for an album that you can go to your local walmart or record store to buy, or $ 50 for a ticket to a concert that might not come to someone's town. Whichh sound's more appealing to the consumer? Hmmmmm
Moron
Erk1982 3 years ago
Well let's say artists get about 50 cents from every cd sale. Now when they sell one song from i-tunes. How much money well they get? 0.01 cents? Maybe selling cd's isn't so bad at all for the musician.
royalsteven 3 years ago
As a struggling musician, I think that it's time to put serious laws against filesharing. It's killing the music industry, and screwing tthe artists over.
Erk1982 3 years ago
go independent, stop blabbing because, you can't dream about letting others do all the work for you, independent hardworking musicians are making it.
georgiagritz 3 years ago 2
the music industry has robbed even their own artists for so long, and at the end of the day they were fkn broke and everything gone. while you wrangle around in binding contracts. a cd sells for 17.00 and the artist get 60-70 cents. where did the rest go? into your pocket.(Not literally). You had your fun, now its my turn.i can get any album or movie i want free of charge ha ha ha!
