My example was to recognize that not everyone approached like this is going to be a martial artist, therefore, the law is probably not going to punish him in particular for having swung first. I'm pretty sure the law doesn't say that all martial artists must wait for the threat to make the first attack before they can counter attack. My example was to recognize that not everyone approached like this is going to be a martial artist, therefore, the law is probably not going to punish him in particular for having swung first. Is that too hard to understand?

In the majority of situations, people will act tough right up to the point of fighting but will stop before actually getting physically violent. There's an episode on Muay Thai... with a palm strike to the head, a decent fighter can deliver 3000 lbs of force, enough to crack your skull in. Similar effects come from other Muay Thai moves.
