Thanks so much, Judy, for creating this beautiful song, but it was Nina Simone who took it not to the nexl level, but to the ultimate one, simply amazing.
I love this song, thankyou for posting. I do seem to remember hearing one time, a song by Judy Collins called, "Love Song to a Whale." I can't find it anywhere...do you know of it?
@normalil I never heard of that title but she wrote a song called "Farewell to Tarwathie" that included the sounds of whales singing. Try searching for it.
@nytechyld100 What a beautiful song. The best recording is on the "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" album....I have two daughters who love this song because it feeds their dreams. I have already taken them to France twice and I am teaching them to speak French. I plan to buy a home in southern France within the next two years. The last line of the song, "....like boats across the Seine and watch the Paris sun set in my father's eyes again...." I cry sometimes when I hear it.
First time I've heard this song -- what a treat. Paris is my favorite city and I have lived there for a week or two at a time, but wish I could live there for longer periods every time I go!
She did not record her own work very often but it was usually a glorious surprise when she did. This song is as good as it gets -- both musically and lyrically. It is up there with the best work by the great Singer/Writers of that time period.
A perfect song that reduces me to ashes every time I hear it. I think her album WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOIES is one of the all-time greatest albums ever made.
Yes, yes. I had that in my long ago youth and still remember it, although I have not reacquired it in any digital form . . . perhaps now I will. She could sing almost anything and I'll listen. thanks
Thanks for the update. I don't think that there is a person that doesn't know that, but for that ONE person that has been living in a cave, I thank you.
Loved Judy Collins as a young serviceman and I still love her. She has the voice of a songbird. I occasionaly hear her on the XM Folk channel. What a talent. What a beautiful woman.
I remember this song when driving through the mountains years ago.I am still in awe when I hear this song. One of my favorite singers and a terrific album. Love her forever.
A small complaint: why is it that Judy Collins always slightly changes the melodies of the songs she sang on recordings? The studio recording versions are always superior; this song is a perfect example, as well as her versions of Someday Soon, Suzanne, Who Knows Where The Time Goes, etc. It bothers me more than a little!
Silly, silly boy. Studio versions are always pristine - a perfectly posed "snap shot." Live performances are spontaneous and flow as does the artist. In this case, I miss the timfonys that added so much power and resonance but otherwise find this an excellent replication. Brings the same tear to my eyes, the same melencholia.
Thank you so much for posting this, so profound. One needs the ear of experience of life, wisdom, and reflectiion, to truly appreciate it....not a song that chlidren of 9could in any meaningfull way, possibly comprehend. Protect childhood.
I shared this with my 9 year old grand-daughter the other day. She was appropriately enraptured. She has an uncommon, for her age, appreciation of adult musical expression
Absolutely perfect, crystal clear. No overdubbing, no silly vocal embelishments. It's just a pure and trained voice that floats on air with angel wings.
Judy Collins has been a major contributor to the quality of my life. After watching this video, can you imagine in 30 years, what musinc currently on TV will be considered worth watching? Thank you, Judy...
I followed her entire career. While we are 3 years apart, we both graduated from the same high school in Denver. Although seeing impared, Judy's father was a popular radio host in Denver for years.
What a stunning performance & such an incredible pure as silk voice. I only wish there were folk singers today with a voice like Judy's. There are some current female folk singers that are good but just don't have the same quality; the pure crystal voice. None of the folk singers now sound even remotely close to folk singers like Judy or Baez. I understand style is different now then singers of 60's/70's but just wish some singers now had some similiarity in their voice like Judy Collins.
Today's singers are afraid to stretch into that higher range like our fearless sisters of yesteryear, like Buffy,Carolyn Hester, Odetta, and even Joni Mitchell and Janis Ian. Today they sing more by the book and don't stetch their outer limits except for a note hear or there for accent. Singing pretty became out of vogue for white girls for quite a while. You had to have a whine and a snarl in your voice to get over.
Thanks so much, Judy, for creating this beautiful song, but it was Nina Simone who took it not to the nexl level, but to the ultimate one, simply amazing.

Fantastic voice she has. Still, I prefer the version as done by This Mortal Coil.
