@5quintic Key is irrelevant, but if it helps, it sounds best when it resolves on a nice phrygian progression right before it goes back to the minor i chord. What do you think about soloing a fifth away over the i chord in a minor progression actually? Any thoughts on that perhaps? I've never heard of Corny Note for Note Harmonizing, maybe you can give me a lesson on that. BTW, its "year AND a half" not "year IN-a-half", and there's no hyphens because its a noun. Moron
@WildBillJP Your writings are litered with numerous grammatical and punctuation errors. Forget about playing guitar, you need to go back to elementary school. It is suppose to be "...noun, moron" not "...noun. Moron" and self-control is a noun. It is unfair for me to argue with you; because, you are a dope and a half.
@5quintic Well what about when you jam a minor blues? What do you think about adding a #4 to an Aeolian based lick, or when you arpeggiate the minor 7 chord its based on? Do you think that sounds as good as playing a lydian based lick instead? I'd really love your thoughts on that as well Maestro. BTW, its "littered", not "litered". Now go play with yourself in your room for a "year in-a-half". I look forward to never hearing from you again :)
What none of you seem to understand is that this is not a "style of playing" that occurs when you incorporate Bach into metal. This style is specific to 1 PERSON, Yngwie Malmsteen. To think that Stump JUST HAPPENS to have the same style is preposterous, especially when he dresses EXACTLY THE SAME!
Hm. A scalloped maple neck strat like instrument with a pale yellow body - where have I seen a player do stuff like this before? Technically accomplished to be sure though.
Ignore the stupid teenagers constantly bitching about who's better. When they grow older, they'll realize to appreciate every skilled guitarist for their variety of playing styles and songs and realize that it'd be much better to hear songs from dozens of different guitarist than from the same guitarist who plays the same style songs on every album til you die of boredom.
@WildBillJP Despite joe's unoriginality (and for that matter Yngwei's as you mentioned), I have to give him credit, it sounds great. If you, on the other hand, know music theory, I am afraid it has not done you any justice.
@5quintic "Stump sounds great and I don't know music theory?" LMFAO You are clearly bereft of an argument, most likely because you know nothing about music. Unlike you, I can actually tell the difference between Yngwie and someone who just plays fast. I could also give specific examples of that, based on MUSIC THEORY :), but I doubt you'd even understand them. You should find a decent teacher, because I'm afraid whatever you're learning hasn't done you justice.
@WildBillJP A person does not need music theory (mumbo jumbo terminology) to compare guitarists nor to play guitar. All a person needs is a keen ear and good intellect. Music theory does not equal talent. I started playing again three months ago. My video is nothing more than a warm-up, the timing is lagging because of a pinky injury. Now, however, I am learning to play left-handed, no instructor required. Twenty years ago, I played of five years, your skills are not even close.
@5quintic Well you're right, you don't need to know theory,(or mumbo jumbo as you call it LOL)...unless you actually want to know what you're talking about, or maybe write a solo or song that actually sounds good LOLOL. Ever hear of note choice? Do you have any clue what kind of progressions they play? What scales? How they improvise? No. If you're skills are so superior, then lets play over the same backing track and see who actually sounds good :) You don't want me to embarrass you
@WildBillJP Music theory (and that is all it is, a thoery) is nothing more than a vehicle. It does not repleace creativity. A person intuitively knows what rhythms and what notes go together well as you indicated ( "...and see who actually sounds good :) " [ encompasses progressions, scales, and improvisation]). Your argument is completely flawd and from my perspective outright laughable. When my left-hand coordination is fully developed, I am going to tear you to shreds.
@5quintic LMFAO, if you think Yngwie, Vai, Satch, Moore or whoever play and write purely by intuition, then you are more misguided than I even thought. Sorry to burst your bubble, but their music is very well thought out and extremely inspired. The fact that you think they play by ear is what's laughable LMFAO. Your arguments make little sense and you have nothing intelligent to say to back them up. BTW, nice excuse, but I don't feel like waiting 20 years to hear you play random licks.
@5quintic "A person intuitively knows what rhythms and what notes go together"????? LMFAO. You really should teach music LOLOL...... "Excuse me Mr. 5quintic? Can I play a melodic minor lick over this chord or do I have to change the progression???"...."Don't worry about that son, a person just INTUITIVELY knows what rhythms and notes go together. Class dismissed ;)"..... LMFAO LOLOLOL. Thanks again for the laughs Maestro.
@WildBillJP My stance is quite clear about music; at this point, I will be repeating myself. As far as the guitarists you write about, most people do not listen to them. Regarding my guitar playing, within a year in-a-half my skills will be up to par. Then we will know whose argument has support. It is not how long someone has been playing but what someone has been playing. The fact is you are not that good of a guitarist. I have heard birds carry tunes better then you can.
@5quintic Your stance is quite clear? That great guitarists play by intuition and don't use theory? SMH. OK, you're just being annoying and now you're gonna make me shut you up. Aren't you like 45? Think you woulda realized that it takes more than a "year IN-A-HALF" of playing random licks by yourself in your room to be a decent guitarist. Fortunately for me, my vids were taken 3 years ago, 6 months after i graduated music school and put down my classical guitar to buy an electric :)
@6bpanorama No, because you obviously have no argument. Go find some guy who dresses and sings exactly like Michael Jackson, and comment on his youtube page how original he is LMFAO. Get a clue kid
@6EELZE6U6666 hes not a copy at all malmseen is one of his biggest influences along with richie blackmore at times they may sound similar but keep in mind its the same genre of neo classical shred
Ive heard everyone say he ripped yngwie off. The truth is they both borrowed ideas from Bach, Beethoven, etc. They sound similar but pretty unique. I really think Mister Stump and Malmsteen should do Duets. If Malmsteen wasn't a pride filled dick that is.
@mds6387 Sorry but that's wrong. Yngwie was the one to actually incorporate Bach and Paganini's style into his music. The notes and chords he chooses are in the same vane of what he believes they would have done. Stump just copied what Yngwie has done, which is why it is lame and uninspired. BTW Stump could never hang with him in a duet. Yngwie is the Harmonic Minor and Phrygian Master, period.
@Fluffypopcicle It's very difficult to be completely original in music today. In fact, it may be literally impossible. It could be said that Yngwie himself isn't totally original, and that he simply expanded on what other artists were doing and took classical+rock to it's logical conclusion. I don't believe that's fair to Yngwie, and I don't believe it's fair to simply write off Joe as an "Yngwie rip off". That said, I'm not too impressed by this performance. Maybe it was an off day.
@wlmason73 I don't mean to be rude, but that is horribly wrong. I could write a book listing musicians who are totally original and extremely innovative, and Yngwie is most def one of them. Be my guest if you can name 1 artist who was doing the same thing at the time, whose music Yngwie "simply expanded on". Yngwie's music is well thought out and extremely inspired. He chooses notes and progressions as he believes Bach would have. Stump just copied him, DOWN TO THE CLOTHES HE WEARS!
@wlmason73 BTW, "he took classical+rock to its logical conclusion."? What does that even mean? If it was so logical, why didn't anyone else do it? Besides the fact that there are a ridiculous amount of styles of rock, and even more styles of classical music and composers. @shredabilly13 Hahaha. I can actually vouch for Joe Stump. I had him as a private instructor at Berklee and he is a very laid back guy. Definitely no huge ego. Hahaha.
Wow, he's almost as boring as Michael Batio, except he dresses EXACTLY like Yngwie.... plays the SAME SCALES.... on the same guitar.... with the same scalloped fingerboard. It's funny how none of you realize that if all Yngwie Malmsteen did was play scales really fast, HE WOULDN'T BE YNGWIE F!@#$%^ Malmsteen! Apparently none of you have ever heard of note choice, song writing ability, ORIGINALITY (lmfao).... Seriously guys, get a friggen clue.
@plukye you are pathetic, and clearly suck at everything, that is why you insult successful and talented musicians by claiming that you're better, without anything at all to back it up. Even if you are good at the guitar, which I seriously doubt, a truly talented musician would never say that they are "better" than anyone else. You are a clown.
Stump is JUST a good guitarist, people would be stupid to compare him to YNGWIE, it is like to compare the power of GOD to monkey power.
KATSU OHTA, NORIFUMI SHIMA, WALTER GIARDINO beat this guy any day of the week and they are guitarist that don´t belong to circle of BECKER, GILBERT or MACALPINE (the very second level behind YNGWIE)
STUMP is a fake guitar god, can use the same strato, the same watch, the same millions of chains on their hand, but NEVER WILL BE YNGWIE.
Would you please stop trolling on this awesome video. I return every now and then to listen to it and I'd rather see praise of the mighty Shredlord, or even constructive criticism, than this infantile crap.
@galkanftw This is probably because the backing track is at such low volume in this recording. I'm sure if you listened to a studio version, it would be easier to hear the melody shaping and how the solos link into everything.
@Nirklas malmsteen is a master of scales where as stump is a melodic genius.. when your as good as either of these guys, then I would say you have already "got somewhere"
Full marks for technical ability, and mastery of the genre. but... come on. After 30 years of this? This music is tiring. Take a breath for goodness sake. Use some dynamics. There are are other metronomic values other than 4/4 & 6/8. Drummers need to be more interesting. This music needs more space, &expressiveness... otherwise EVERY song may as well be an extension of the last one. These remarkable & erudite players need to embrace jazz and more diverse musics. They'd be great at it.
@mouthyweasel you have a point, BUT... this is a video to showcase his playing, for a guitarist to go beyond this, he must go THROUGH it. I'm sure he can , IF HE WANTS TO! Other great guitarists have, like Alan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, etc, but they lost fans (like myself) and I'm sure they picked up new ones. 30 years of this, and I still love it.
NO MAMEN ESCUCHAR A ESTE WEY ES VERDAD ES UN ORGASMO QUE TECNICA QUE ARTE QUE DUENDE PFFFF MAESTRO ENSEÑADME LOS PASOS A SEGUIR PARA CONVERTIRME COMO USTED
Try playing with flawless technique running a scalloped strat through a marshall plexi, it's not easy. His technique is better than that of most guitarists, he just doesn't use mountains of distortion through a high gain amp and a gutiar with strings that are practically laying on the frets.
I gotta hand it to some of you guys. U R Funny. that said, I liked what Joe did with this tune. I also had the opportunity to see joe play live. I was able to stand ten feet in front of him the whole time. he did much of the set with his eyes closed! I thought his playing was excellent.
@DJStompZone and MAB can play circles around Yngwie LOL...personally I love Stump, Malmsteen, Batio, louriero, Gilbert, Cooley, etc... all great guitarists
Joe Stump is a quality guitarist, while Neo classical thats been around before yngwie was born they both do it well.( Neo = new ) the only thing that disappoints me a little is so much of Joe Stumps music is so tuneful and well suited to lyrics, i wish he would throw a few songs to a decent singer/songwriter to see what transpires. Saying he is less than original is stupid, like saying there was a pretty girl in Eygpt around 2000 B.C. and everyone after that is a shallow imatation. He is great!
Listen to his band The Reign of Terror. Excellent music with vocals. First two albums are more raw, some of the tunes bordering on thrash metal, and the last two are more power-heavy metal oriented. Anyway, you can't miss with any of the albums.
@TheLoudplayer Yngwie Malmsteen & Joe Stump is a different guitarist!..not fake!..and if u wanna know..the true fact is..Yngwie Malmsteen is a copy of the legendary guitarist.. RITCHIE BLACKMORE (DEEP PURPLE/RAINBOW).... u never know the fact!..dont said like u r the pro guitar judge! fucker!

personally i think his "sloppyness" that he apparently has(Even tho i cannot hear it at all) is a part of his style, i mean who wants to hear everyone get everything clean as hell, i mean sure i cant play this in a million years, but i mean sometimes it is good to see someone come along that has a sloppyness to their style because it is something new.
Close your fucking eyes and listen to the modes, pattern he uses stop with damn malmsteen crap. And sounds is due to overdrive. This dude is full shred and talented.
@MegaYoshitsune No he doesn't. I know him personally. He is a very humble human being. I don't know where you heard that, but it is totally false. He is married to a wonderful woman whom he adores and stays humble. Joe just enjoys playing music, he enjoys being married, and enjoys being a teacher. Period. I just don't know where people hear these things.
@neilfitz123 Not really. While Yngwie is great, Joe is a little bit better because he's got the technique and education behind him. Malmsteen has no technical background. ,
@Robyn1757 i meant becuase he has loadss of rings and chain and shit on+ guitar lloks the same even though its not a fender+ amazing guitar play. yngwie has loads of technique,
I actually prefer Stump to Malmsteen because I really feel more emotion in Stump's work that in Malmsteen's. Don't get me wrong, they're both amazing players but when I hear Malmsteen play, it sounds a bit too technical without the emotion you can really feel from some other guitar players, but he plays it damn well. Stump isn't as technical as Malmsteen, but he definitely makes up for it with the emotion he displays.
Am I the only one who thinks his technique is still a bit dirty?
I mean, I can't ply this shit not in a million years but usually these kind of guitar players have a flawless technique and I just don't hear that here.
@Iszil he's got a touch of grit/dirt to him - possibly a bad habit from playing rock n' roll with attitude or maybe can't maintain speed for a long period of time and the fatigue makes a couple sloppy notes once in a while...
his personality and talking could use a little sprucing up to make him a little more marketable in between moments guitar playing
Listen to his other instructional videos or hear his new album Virtuostic Vendetta. This here isn't near his best conserning precision, although I love it nonetheless. Rawness and energy is the way to go, even if you hit a few wrong notes here and there.
@Iszil Yeah, but I kind of like it. Whenever I see these players do a flawless performance, I think two things; "Well, I'll just throw my guitar out, now." and "I wonder how many takes that took?' I kind of like seeing another guitarist flub the occasional note. It adds a level of humanity and makes me not feel so bad about my own lack of talent
@ItsNotASlim his guitar is perfect for shredding, it has cleaner sound than most guitars because of the HS-3 hum-free pickups. just a really poor recording here. probably just the cameras mic and massive volume from the amp

STUMP is a fake guitar god, can use the same strato, the same watch, the same millions of chains on their hand, but NEVER WILL BE YNGWIE.

idk too much like malmsteen,90% soundsjust like notes rather than music.
galkanftw 6 months ago
@galkanftw This is probably because the backing track is at such low volume in this recording. I'm sure if you listened to a studio version, it would be easier to hear the melody shaping and how the solos link into everything.

They'd be great at it.
mouthyweasel 7 months ago
@mouthyweasel you have a point, BUT... this is a video to showcase his playing, for a guitarist to go beyond this, he must go THROUGH it. I'm sure he can , IF HE WANTS TO! Other great guitarists have, like Alan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, etc, but they lost fans (like myself) and I'm sure they picked up new ones. 30 years of this, and I still love it.

Try playing with flawless technique running a scalloped strat through a marshall plexi, it's not easy. His technique is better than that of most guitarists, he just doesn't use mountains of distortion through a high gain amp and a gutiar with strings that are practically laying on the frets.

He is great!
dragonfires101 9 months ago
@dragonfires101
Listen to his band The Reign of Terror. Excellent music with vocals. First two albums are more raw, some of the tunes bordering on thrash metal, and the last two are more power-heavy metal oriented. Anyway, you can't miss with any of the albums.

personally i think his "sloppyness" that he apparently has(Even tho i cannot hear it at all) is a part of his style, i mean who wants to hear everyone get everything clean as hell, i mean sure i cant play this in a million years, but i mean sometimes it is good to see someone come along that has a sloppyness to their style because it is something new.

Iszil 1 year ago 28
@Iszil he's got a touch of grit/dirt to him - possibly a bad habit from playing rock n' roll with attitude or maybe can't maintain speed for a long period of time and the fatigue makes a couple sloppy notes once in a while...
his personality and talking could use a little sprucing up to make him a little more marketable in between moments guitar playing
numbersabcdefg 1 year ago
@numbersabcdefg
Listen to his other instructional videos or hear his new album Virtuostic Vendetta. This here isn't near his best conserning precision, although I love it nonetheless. Rawness and energy is the way to go, even if you hit a few wrong notes here and there.
jfutach 1 year ago
@Iszil Yeah, but I kind of like it. Whenever I see these players do a flawless performance, I think two things; "Well, I'll just throw my guitar out, now." and "I wonder how many takes that took?' I kind of like seeing another guitarist flub the occasional note. It adds a level of humanity and makes me not feel so bad about my own lack of talent
azimuth361 1 year ago
@Iszil this is one of his older songs listen to his album speed metal messiah you will be impressed
dBdreams 1 year ago
@Iszil His technique is flawless, the guitar he's using isn't meant for this type of music and playing style.
ItsNotASlim 11 months ago
@ItsNotASlim his guitar is perfect for shredding, it has cleaner sound than most guitars because of the HS-3 hum-free pickups. just a really poor recording here. probably just the cameras mic and massive volume from the amp

@Iszil yeah i agree could also be cause his tone sounds like shit
haynesallica 11 months ago
