This is a Cholla cactus. It does not shoot spikes or senses heat. The needles have microscopic barbs that run in the opposite direction of the needle's point. The slightest touch, even a touch we werent aware of, is enough for it latch on and cause some serious pain. This plant is designed to do this so it can spread. Hitches a ride on an animal or in this case a human. That little segment has a very good chance of becoming a full grown plant.
