When I got into athletics it was to teach me what you did.. Not have excuses/ show leadership/ and get back up when you fall.. The world needs more people like you. People that care more about their integrity than a game. I have always wanted to watch a perfect game in life. definition of a role model
It was a horrible call in the worst of times, but for 24 hours I felt pride in sports and in umpires and atheletes. These two gentlemen showed us that no matter what we are humans above all. My hats go off to both,
@joeyabomb No you are not! You are suppose to make what you feel is the correct call at all times! You do that at all times to keep the integrity of the game intact at ALL TIMES!
Also, kudos to Jim Joyce for admitting he messed up--a rarity these days. He fucked the call and feels terrible about it. I say this man has more value to me than anyone else in that world.
the only thing that im upset with is.. he fucking makes a book that makes millions of dollars even though he missed a call that WILL be Galaraga's only perfect game
baseball is a fucking joke, umpires are humans they make more mistakes THATS WHY NFL USES INSTANT REPLAY for fuck terds like this shit head dont ruin games
this shows the sportsmanship of armando galarraga god bless you!!!! shout out to the people who LIVE baseball as i do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey everyone fuckes up!!!! at least this umpire admits it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have alot of respect for the umpire that admits he fucks up!!! cmon guys shouts out to armando galarraga for a perfect game!!!!
It takes a good guy to admit he was wrong. It takes a better one that goes public, admits his mistakes, and apologizes. Perhaps the person that should have been more honest was Jason Donald! He was out by a mile, and he knew it. Instead, he just smiled, like he pulled on over on everyone, and took position at first. Jason Donald is the person here with the failing integrity!
This was an incident that transcended baseball and sports. A huge mistake, a humble apology, a forgiving and open minded "victim" (I don't know any other word to use), and a better future for both. This was a valuable lesson on how to be professional in all walks of life. Props to both.
die hard tigers fan. i watched every pitch of this game and i was in disbelief when this went down. jim joyce handled this with more class than anyone i've ever seen in professional sports handle any situation. mlb umpires are notorious for being headcases and too proud to admit a mistake, more than any other pro sports officials, so to hear this gave me a whole new respect for this particular ump.
@brodyf3 Umpires are told to stick to their calls. It doesn't say in the rules to overturn a call after you make it. plus, Joyce didn't know. He said in this video he saw it when he saw it later. sooo, hopefully that answers ur question.
Jim Joyce you know and we know that it was wrong and it wasn't your fault...the baserunner u should've told the ump that u were out but the ref was fine cuz u apologised
to this day jim joyce is one of the most respected umpires in the mlb, and that says alot after he went through this, he's a great umpire and clearly has alot of character players love him regard this mistake. of course it was terrible and i'll never understand how he missed it (he seemed to be at a perfect angle to see the play) but hes clearly a great guy who unfortunately made a rare mistake at the worst possible time
i witnessed two perfect games in person (cone and wells). I happened to be in Detroit this day visiting a college. We went to this game and I couldnt believe that i was probably going to see a THIRD perfect game in person. 14 months later I still feel a ridiculous amount of pain for Galarraga. What a fine gentleman Joyce and Galarraga were after this game. God bless this great sport
We all know Galaragga had it. Joyce knows it, Galaragga knows it, and so do we. Galaragga did in fact pitch a perfect game. End of conversation, right..?
@Dunderhead36 Tones are used when speaking. You are typing. With the amount of idiots and trolls on youtube, there was no better way of figuring out whether or not you were serious than by asking a question.
@nyy22592 Buddy, my point was that he's a struggling pitcher, despite the perfect game. Must I draw you a perfect game, or you understand it now. Now quit acting like a smartass.
@Dunderhead36 EXACTLY MY POINT. You don't have to be an amazing pitcher to throw a no-hitter and throwing a no hitter doesnt make you an amazing pitcher. How hard is that to understand?!?!?
@nyy22592 no, i mean he was still a rookie. You don't have to be an "AMAZING pitcher" to throw a perfect game, but it's much more unlikely that a pitcher with as poor number as Galaragga posts can throw one. And, no. He won't be remembered for more than this almost perfect game.
@Dunderhead36 Yes I did, and plenty of people agree apparently. You don't know what's going to happen. It's my opinion on what i expect. Get over it >.>
@Dunderhead36 Lol I dragged this? It takes 2 to argue. I wanted to fully understand your objection, which in fact was 100% your opinion with no basis on fact.
@nyy22592 yeah, it was meant to be an opinion, as was your original comment. In reality, we don't really know what his legacy will be, but most likely this single game is all he would ever be remembered for. The reason I mentioned he was in the Arizona farm system was to make a jab at your comment, in a good mannered, or at least, not in an offensive manner. Finally, after about a week, you do understand what my comment meant NOW? btw you act like a 12 year old; writing fancy, and make no sense.
@Dunderhead36 I understood it from the beginning. I just disagreed and showed you why you were wrong, yet you still fail to understand what happened. Here it is for the 100th time...
Perfect game/No hitter - has happened a bunch of times
Being incredibly sportsmanlike on one of the biggest blown calls in history - will not be forgotten.
By the way did you just insult me because I talk like an intelligent human being?
@nyy22592 he's only being remembered for his sportmanship because of the no-hitter. You're not being intelligent because you are stretching out every little word, and are doing so in a smart-ass manner. Btw, I love how you respond almost immediately after each of my replies. Very committed to the fight, are we?
To be honest, he ended up having the only imperfect perfect game in history. Which has never happened before. Becasue WE all know he pitched a perfect game.
to all of you saying they would strike out on purpose... no you wouldn't. My team was once perfect gamed in to the 6th and i was the oen to break it up. It feels great.
god, this interview is like torture to listen too. what does the media think they're gonna get out of the guy. the ump thought the runner was safe, but he was actually out. it's not that complicated.
even if he was safe by a mile i woulda called him out.......if i was the batter i woulda struckout on purpose. dont wanna ruin any kids dreams here now....
these guys r human they make mistakes. quit ranting on joyce with the retarded t shirts and the threats. grow up its not a perfect game. that is what makes it all more fun.
guys, he is what we call a human being. people make mistakes, its very unfortunate that it had to be the call the ruined the perfect game. But at least he was the 1 person out of 100 that admitted to making a mistake. and to be quite honest, Galarraga got more fame for this than if he would have gotten the perfect game
Jim Joyce is one of the best umpires in the game. He made a mistake, he knows it. I have a huge amount of respect for him. He didn't have to have this news conference or apologize to anyone. People who say he's a bad umpire don't know anything about the umpires in the MLB.
They SHOULD have restored the call and gave him the perfect game. Why couldn't they? It was 2 outs in the ninth. Just restore call since he was clearly out, and give him the PG!!! Atleast in his mind he knows he has a PG
@dodgers162003 since it is "the rarest feat in baseball" the umpire needs to know the situation at that moment, and be on top of his game, AND be not a complete idiot
@yrtyrtyytrytry if u look closely, he wasnt celebrating in the beginning his hands were on his head and he was like "i was fucking out" in his head. he celebrated because its disrespect for his entire team if he argues that he was out... come on man, common sense
i dont care what he thought or how much he apologizes or who "how mature he is and how well he handled the situation" he still sucks and is a muthaf*cka
so a perfect game is the rarest feat in baseball, a game of total perfection. Yet the umpire has to be perfect all the time, and has no forgiveness? F U
Bud Selig, fuck you. You had the chance to give Armando what he deserved, and you declined. I'm much more disappointed in you than I ever will be in Jim Joyce.
I think that joyce believed he made the right call, and that making the right call is what should happen, even in a situation like that. People make mistakes, and should be forgiven. The replay slows it down, and in real life that difference was probably about 1/10 of a second. Thats pretty close to call. Umpires shouldnt be biased about calls just because hes one out away from a perfect game.
Jim Joyce is arguably the most mature and impressive umpire in the history of the sport. I umpire baseball on the side, and I can honestly say that messing up a call is one of the worst feelings in the world, but even to this day, I have apologized for one blown call over the past 4 years.
My worst one, was the exact opposite of this. I took the cycle away from a kid who had a single, double, and homerun, and I called him out at 3rd base even though he was safe by about half a second.
I honestly have never felt more respect for anyone in baseball than I have right now watching this video. Armando pitched a hell of a game and stood there, without saying a word. He accepted what had happened without protest. Jim apologized for muffing a call with all of the sincerity he could muster. I am proud to be a fan of baseball with men like this in the game.
I remember this i got over it but still the other teams fans are telling us to calm down i am pretty sure if it happend to there team they would be complaning to i know the guy made a mistake hes only human.
@commandoBST123 calling cause you want to give the pitcher a perfect game you letting the other team down a chance to win teh game. you want to make the right call. Even if you know you made the wrong call you don't fix it up.
@critter2 not like you always give them the out i mean jim joyce shouldve been able to give the out hes an umpire hes made calls like that for what 10 years
i know no ones perfect but he should of got the out .
Hey it happens. Hes only human, he realized he made a mistake, and he admitted to it, just like when we (the cardinals) got robbed in the 85 world series.
if it was me at bat, even though the was on the line, after a hit like that i wudn've even tried to make it to first ...i wuda gave it to him ...he was more shocked he was called safe than Gal was
for all you people who say i still would have called him out even if he was safe you would give a perfect game to a guy that didnt deserve it and lets say that the indians came back, you would of took a win away from them. you have to make the right call nomatter what
wat impressed me the most about this, is Joyce was very mature and took his mistake up front, and how galaragga took it. mlb players are known to be premadonnas and argue over everythin, i couldnt believe galaragga didnt argue
@TheFunnyManHQ are you crazy or you drank fuel? what is really impressive is armando behavior; joyce had no more choice than apologize, he should be talking to bud selig right now in order to revert de decision, Jim is like a modern member of Ku klus Klan, he is just a racist, you can see it in his face, the omnipotence. IT WAS A DARK DAY FOR BASEBALL!!!
@estebancm i said that about galaragga you dip shit.i said i couldnt believe how galragga just took it and moved one. and Bug Selig is the biggest asshole of all, becuase he could have over turned the call but he didnt. and they arent goin to over turn a call years later you dumbass.
@l7le you really want to talk about that? in the rules it states that it an opinion of the umpire he is out or safe. see an opinion which does not make it right or wrong. i wouldn't be talking you asshole.
@critter2 All rules laid out as they are in the world at this exact moment must be right! According to your logic: A cop shoots a man across the street because he was sure that the man was pulling out a gun. Later on, he says, "well I thought he pulled out a gun" instead of "i know for sure he pulled out a gun" and you would be satisfied with that because the law says it's ok? Well baseball isn't as drastic, but we shouldn't be ok with the flaws that umpires bring to the game! Mitigate the flaws
Glad that a career minor leaguer is worthy of this bullshit but come playoff time teams get skrewed 10 times worse fuck Jim Joyce is a complete asshole in this situation not because of his call but because of his reaction
@mikecgrimes Jim Joyce isn't an asshole he's been regarded as one of the greatest and most respected umps in the game, people make mistakes it's part of life and sometimes people make mistakes on bigger stages. Props to Jim Joyce for coming out I mean any ump could have just not talked about it and ignored the situation but he owned up to it.
@BestTits ummm.... actually Jim Joyce is NOT a horrible ump you moron. He's one of the best umpires in the MLB. He does all the All-Star games and more Playoff games than any other ump. He simply made a human error and missed a call and ADMITTED to missing the call because he has so much class and pride for his job. You are a moron and clearly do not follow baseball.
@BestTits Jim Joyce is one of the greatest and most respected umps in the game, people make mistakes it's part of life and sometimes people make mistakes on bigger stages. Are you trying to tell me that you've never made a mistake and felt bad about it if you say no your lying and right now your being a little bit hypocritical
I've looked at close up videos a hundred times and in my honest opinion I believe Joyce wasn't looking at Galarraga's glove closely enough, as we all know when the ball first enters the glove long before the runner hits the bag, but then the ball moves around and snowballs at the top of his glove which is the point I believe Jim looked at the glove thinking the ball at that point was entering and the runner had just hit the bag and he called it safe. Just my thoughts.
no one cares that you apologized you fat ass tom selleck, we will be happy when you crash your car into a gypsy wagon and catch flames, and your seat belt gets stuck so you cant escape
@danbrown565 whoa there buddy, calm down. This guy had enough balls to apologize and, as an umpire myself, that is the hardest frickin thing to do. Yea, I've made mistakes and blown calls, yet I haven't admitted it. This guy is class.
Everyone that watches this video should help me thumbs down any support or sympathy for Joyce. That man knew what he was doing. Had the call be 'some what' close to being safe, he would have been on that mic telling all of us how he was right.
hes about to thorw the 20th perfect game in mlb history and then the fucking gay umpire makes the wrong call in my book he threw the best dam perfect game there ever was and if the umpire wants to ruin it then he can go fuck him self
poor guy man, he made a mistake it happens...if baseball would just freaking be like every other sport and have instant replay this dude wouldn't be taking so much hate :/
Jim Joyce is all class and one of the best umpires in the game. He made a mistake. Umpires do that. They are only human. It just happens that he made his mistake at an incredibly rare and crucial time, and cost a kid a place in history as a result. Joyce confessed and apologized. I forgive him, and I'm glad he's an umpire in MLB.
A side note: Galaraga is all class, too. I would have gone ape shit in his position.
He was safe

hockeyhenry619 7 months ago
@lpmc723 as a certified umpire I can tell you a calls a call and it's irreversible.
blake4777 7 months ago
They SHOULD have restored the call and gave him the perfect game. Why couldn't they? It was 2 outs in the ninth. Just restore call since he was clearly out, and give him the PG!!! Atleast in his mind he knows he has a PG
LPMC723 7 months ago
JIM JOYCE ....WORST UMPIRE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
purefrog1 7 months ago
You should be banned from umpireing
tchupp420 7 months ago
@dodgers162003 since it is "the rarest feat in baseball" the umpire needs to know the situation at that moment, and be on top of his game, AND be not a complete idiot
moisty44 8 months ago
But, really, the runner should've at least said to him "dude, i was out" or something. Instead of celebrating like an ass with his 1st base coach.
yrtyrtyytrytry 8 months ago
@yrtyrtyytrytry if u look closely, he wasnt celebrating in the beginning his hands were on his head and he was like "i was fucking out" in his head. he celebrated because its disrespect for his entire team if he argues that he was out... come on man, common sense
giggitygoo9812 7 months ago
well the pitcher had a great attitude about it he argued but then went back to finish the game

gotta give credit to joyce for being a man and apologizing to galaragga that he had fucked up the call.

NOONE SHOULD BE MAD AT JIM JOYCE, BE MAD AT BUD SELIG !

i dont care what he thought or how much he apologizes or who "how mature he is and how well he handled the situation" he still sucks and is a muthaf*cka
moisty44 8 months ago
@moisty44
so a perfect game is the rarest feat in baseball, a game of total perfection. Yet the umpire has to be perfect all the time, and has no forgiveness? F U
dodgers162003 8 months ago
Bud Selig, fuck you. You had the chance to give Armando what he deserved, and you declined. I'm much more disappointed in you than I ever will be in Jim Joyce.
ICanHasComments 8 months ago 2
I think that joyce believed he made the right call, and that making the right call is what should happen, even in a situation like that. People make mistakes, and should be forgiven. The replay slows it down, and in real life that difference was probably about 1/10 of a second. Thats pretty close to call. Umpires shouldnt be biased about calls just because hes one out away from a perfect game.
konaryder43 8 months ago
Bud Selig should of changed the call

Jim Joyce is arguably the most mature and impressive umpire in the history of the sport. I umpire baseball on the side, and I can honestly say that messing up a call is one of the worst feelings in the world, but even to this day, I have apologized for one blown call over the past 4 years.
My worst one, was the exact opposite of this. I took the cycle away from a kid who had a single, double, and homerun, and I called him out at 3rd base even though he was safe by about half a second.
Props.
amarks2013 8 months ago
Jim joyce really handled it with class. So did galarraga. Imagine how bad it would be if that was carlos zambrano instead of armando gallarraga

Baseball needs more umps like Jim Joyce
SpartyHard10 8 months ago 2
I honestly have never felt more respect for anyone in baseball than I have right now watching this video. Armando pitched a hell of a game and stood there, without saying a word. He accepted what had happened without protest. Jim apologized for muffing a call with all of the sincerity he could muster. I am proud to be a fan of baseball with men like this in the game.

critter2 8 months ago
@critter2 not like you always give them the out i mean jim joyce shouldve been able to give the out hes an umpire hes made calls like that for what 10 years
i know no ones perfect but he should of got the out .
commandoBST123 8 months ago
Hey it happens. Hes only human, he realized he made a mistake, and he admitted to it, just like when we (the cardinals) got robbed in the 85 world series.

if it was me at bat, even though the was on the line, after a hit like that i wudn've even tried to make it to first ...i wuda gave it to him ...he was more shocked he was called safe than Gal was

I hope Armando does it again without a bad call robbing him.

wat impressed me the most about this, is Joyce was very mature and took his mistake up front, and how galaragga took it. mlb players are known to be premadonnas and argue over everythin, i couldnt believe galaragga didnt argue

IT WAS A DARK DAY FOR BASEBALL!!!
estebancm 5 months ago
@estebancm i said that about galaragga you dip shit.i said i couldnt believe how galragga just took it and moved one. and Bug Selig is the biggest asshole of all, becuase he could have over turned the call but he didnt. and they arent goin to over turn a call years later you dumbass.
TheFunnyManHQ 5 months ago
why would calling a runner safe even be in your mind on the 27th out of a perfect game if he beat the throw by 2 steps id still call him out
patsrule1112 9 months ago
@patsrule1112 cause your taking away someone else chance to win the game you people who fail miserably being an umpire. good thing your fans
critter2 8 months ago
@critter2 good thing were fans? he was OUT. good thing joyce wont ump another one of galarrag's games ever again.
patsrule1112 8 months ago
"I thought he beat play" ... when an ump makes a call, it should be "I know he beat the play."
l7le 9 months ago
@l7le you really want to talk about that? in the rules it states that it an opinion of the umpire he is out or safe. see an opinion which does not make it right or wrong. i wouldn't be talking you asshole.
critter2 8 months ago
@critter2 All rules laid out as they are in the world at this exact moment must be right! According to your logic: A cop shoots a man across the street because he was sure that the man was pulling out a gun. Later on, he says, "well I thought he pulled out a gun" instead of "i know for sure he pulled out a gun" and you would be satisfied with that because the law says it's ok? Well baseball isn't as drastic, but we shouldn't be ok with the flaws that umpires bring to the game! Mitigate the flaws

mikecgrimes 9 months ago
@mikecgrimes Jim Joyce isn't an asshole he's been regarded as one of the greatest and most respected umps in the game, people make mistakes it's part of life and sometimes people make mistakes on bigger stages. Props to Jim Joyce for coming out I mean any ump could have just not talked about it and ignored the situation but he owned up to it.
HeresWhatThink 9 months ago
horrible ump, he should have retired, or been fired
BestTits 9 months ago
@BestTits ummm.... actually Jim Joyce is NOT a horrible ump you moron. He's one of the best umpires in the MLB. He does all the All-Star games and more Playoff games than any other ump. He simply made a human error and missed a call and ADMITTED to missing the call because he has so much class and pride for his job. You are a moron and clearly do not follow baseball.
SayHey1Time 9 months ago
@BestTits Jim Joyce is one of the greatest and most respected umps in the game, people make mistakes it's part of life and sometimes people make mistakes on bigger stages. HeresWhatThink 9 months ago
Both Joyce and Galarraga have class. True role models. God bless both of them
alexcubs25 9 months ago 4
I've looked at close up videos a hundred times and in my honest opinion I believe Joyce wasn't looking at Galarraga's glove closely enough, as we all know when the ball first enters the glove long before the runner hits the bag, but then the ball moves around and snowballs at the top of his glove which is the point I believe Jim looked at the glove thinking the ball at that point was entering and the runner had just hit the bag and he called it safe. Just my thoughts.
