this talk about 'madlib didn't flip it enough' is ridiculous. if you think a sample has to be rendered unrecognizable in order to create a brilliant beat, you are on the wrong track.
any real producer will tell you that it's not about the complexity of the flip, it's about conveying what the sample inspires you to do as an artist. if that results in chopping it up beyond recognition, so be it, but it is far from a necessity.
@joeblowmakesbeats ur right it sholudnt matter. but madlib does this too often. other examples are "heavy" from the jaylib album and "americas most blunted from madvillain(at least there was some scratchin). i love the track no question, but its also feels like lazy work by him. madlib has a hear for sample, i just wish he didnt take it for granted.
@DaComebakKid He 'does this too often'? I'm sorry, but how are you the authority on this? I think you missed the point of what I was trying to say... he's not 'taking it for granted', he's doing what he is inspired to do as an artist.
You're free to take this track and flip it however you want, but to come on here and state that Madlib's version is somehow wrong just because you think he should do it differently is a bit ignorant IMO.
@ToOnzTheOriginaL i feel you its the same with me they say i've got a black mans soul in a korean mans body i understand why when people say they can't believe it
Nice!! The bass line on the hook of this song was sampled by Tyrese on 'Sweet Lady'. You can hear it a lot clearer towards the end of the song from 3:22 to the end. Nicely done..
It makes me feel cool that I spent an hour or so cuttin up this song the same exact way he did except mine has the "how many times have I told you" to "the years are moving fast," which I flipfloped with "you cant hang on to the past", and then at the end "in the middle and it comes as no supprise to me" repeats until the end, all pitched and errthang. Man thinking the same was as my favorite producer and mc!
Em 1983 fora Bobby Caldwell agosto Lua, um projecto que tem muito mais alma rock-oriented, apenas no Japão, foi lançado nos Estados Unidos na década de 1990.
Bobby Caldwell is one talented, soulful (blue-eyed) brotha. I loved seeing him, Average White Band and Teena Marie live and seeing many African-American fans digging good music regardless of cultural background :) Mx
Reminds me of Westwood Village and UCLA, The Magic Pan and Moustache Cafe, department store modeling, Summer of '82 - 3 months in Europe, the love of my life moving across the U.S. to go to law school. Sailing from The Marina to Malibu - jumping off and swimming to shore. A myriad of memories woven together that formed the feeling of my early 20's and college years. Wonderful times.
@girljazzlvr You sound like the the most interesting woman in the world, do you drink Dos Equis beer occaisionally? Just playing, you do a nice job of painting a picture. I was 3 yrs old in 82 but also have very fond memories of the 80's.
It also has something to do with recapturing the original and bringing it back to a new age of time. If Madlib had not used this song alot of people would never hear it.
The music speaks for itself. Madlib just brought it back. Plus it should wake up curiosity with the listener bringing him to the originator Bobby Caldwell. That's wat this beatmaking is about. Because of hip hop and samples I got interested and learned about the 'real artists' from back in the day.
It's not terribly important to me if Mr. Caldwell and/or his producers got royalties from having this song sampled by Madlib. But no, I doubt he got this cleared. If he got all his samples cleared, he and Stones Throw wouldn't make a cent on his work. I didn't say sampling was easy--quite the opposite. Madlib is one of my favorite producers, and arguably the best living on the boards. That doesn't make THIS particular song any more original.
Madlib did a LITTLE more than just speed up the beat
He re-sampled and compressed the drums, and did the same with the bassline
Yes the beat was easy to make, but so what? It was an ill song, and MED is really what made it shine. Just because something is easy to do doesn't make it any less worthy as a work of art.
Props to Madlib for reviving this track, but he hardly touched it at all. You can respect him for the discovery, but beyond that, this is a straight jack. Lord knows this nigga Bobby Caldwell probably could use the cash from this track nowadays.
@jerelny For sure he probably needs the money. But he definitly is no n***a. when madlib is jacking for beats...well. that discussion is ooold. hiphop does sample and thats that. you take it for what it is. and love it like it or hate it.
I like it. Madlib is one of my favorite producers, but I think this is an example of a producer not really working hard to reimagine a beat. I doubt Bobby Caldwell is getting any payment for this. And the word nigga is racially/ethnically neutral. Anybody can be one. And it wasn't a slam. I like Madlib and Mr. Caldwell :-0
I think its comparable to the 'Barbershop' beat that 9th Wonder did for Murs. 9th sampled 'coming down from love' damn near on a loop. But used the bass wisely just like this. Madlib is a multi instrumentalist though and I can imagine this took him seconds in comparison to YNQ arrangments.
I've never been a big fan of 9th Wonder. I think he relies too much on soul samples and generated a wave of copycats (i.e. Kev Brown, Oddisee). However, I think his work with Murs has been great. It's just sort of agitating to hear cats get hyped on a niggas work when he hardly touched it at all. One thing people love(d) about Dilla is that he could bury an obscure sample so deep into a beat that it took weeks to figure out where it came from.
@jerelny yo i feel u i make beats and i feel like im cheating if i just loop it and put drums over i almost always chop it up into a bunch of little pieces so i can totally re make a whole new song and ad other elements from other songs if u like madlib check out my beats i sampled bobby caldwell 2 on my beat called smooth check it out on my beat got some soulful joints peace!
@koolanddagang12 that's what up lol. Madlib has made some of my favorite hip hop beats, but I think a lot of his recent mixtapes are pretty shitty. If he doesn't knock out a well-rounded and cohesive album soon, his stock is going to plummet. I think Black Milk is the best producer out right now. 9th Wonder is hit or miss. Madlib is... ?
@jerelny Yea i feel you. I kno black milk is doin work because hes producing AND rapping so he's got a lot goin for him, i know hes got his Detroit connects so he should have no problem with his Album of the Year. Im not sure what 9th is up to but he was fuckin with Big Remo and David Banner for a minute. Madlib is....... ?
@koolanddagang12 That's the thing about 9th Wonder. He isn't selective with the artists her works with. I think Madlib (Guilty Simpson, MED) and Black Milk (Elzhi, Guilty Simpson) are very selective and to a certain extent limit their productions to a small group of really talented artists although they could produce for bigger artists.Madlib is supposed to be on Ye's new joint. No comment on that. 9th is way too overexposed now.... he did some nice shit with LB and Murs back in the day tho.
I'm a fan of Madlib and now I'm a fan of Bobby Caldwell b/c of that "Cant Hold On" track. I think that's whats great about sampling though. Agreed, he didn't do too much with the beat besides speeding it up, at the same time it's a much different vibe you get from each track. At the very least Madlib showed hip hop heads like myself that Bobby Caldwell was an absolute genius and we shudn't sleep on him. Thanks Beat Konducta, I'm gonna take in the rest of this Caldwell album -Peace
@jerelny No - Madlib most certainly paid for the sample. It's not a hard process.. I think warner music owns this one.. could be wrong. This work, like most pop songs, is considered a "work for hire" meaning that the author/composer intends for this song to be used by third parties (not themselves or the record label) so it's out there and can be used by you or anyone. And whether or not Bobby himself is getting paid from that depends on contracts.. I expect he is though.
@beans4breakfast your not necessarily a racist if u say the word nigga..but just remember it is a deorgatory dehumanizing word in definition and origin..so ppl are likely to b offended..so b aware of that if YOU CHOOSE to use the word. peace :p
I know for some people straight jacking of samples show lack of creativity however I do feel in some cases it is ok. I dont look at it as straight jacking I look at it as paying respect to the music that was there before. Some people are not lucky enough to know about the original stuff and only hear stuff when hip hop producers sample gems such as this.
I see where you're coming from. I think it does bring exposure to artists who wouldn't otherwise get it. But I'm just like, Damn... Madlib has mad original material. It's like he wasn't even trying. If he liked the beat so much, he should've made a playlist or something and posted it on stonethrow's website lol.
Who the hell said that Bobby Caldwell wasn't compensated for Madlib's sampling of this song? Why do you "doubt" that Caldwell got any payment? Just your own random assumption to be pretentious and pompous? Bobby Caldwell isn't some super obscure artist and that definitely was NOT the first time Caldwell's music has been sampled. I think it would be safe to assume that Caldwell is no stranger to sample clearances.
he has a similar style of singing comparable to stevie wonder and micheal sembello.a talented guy no doubt.check out his co write with jason scheff on chicago hit what kind of man would i be on chicago 19!
I think it's bobby's best album. Maybe it was not so commercial succesfull as his first two albums.(altough it reached gold status in japan) Bobby said in an interview this is his own favorite album .
All the old Bobby Caldwell albums are so hip. If you hang on to them, they will grow on you and you'll find that there are so many "sleeper cuts" that you wind up really digging.
It matters not what colour he is, he has alot of soul and flavor. His music is great!!!!! Anyone can relate no matter what race, colour, religion.............etc
You have to have no brain to have it dumbed down to be able to appreciate this song...
It requires some musical knowledge to sample but in the end, your not the genius. And yes, in this case i like sampling. Still its quite bad that today black music is just rip off of black music from older days.
theres nothing wrong with sampling music, MADLIB sampled this for MEDAPHOAR's track, "cant hold on", the difference in musical style is vast, the result is almost incomparable to this track, madlib is opening ears and making fresh sounds from old ones.
Aw Man,I got people trying to crucify me for saying that the blatantly sampled loop on Commons new song from B.Caldwell's "Open Your Eyes"is a total rip off.
Whites do have SOUL. Soul does not have a colour, your short minded and really racist if you fail to understand that concept.

it's pretty much just one un-choppable loop. the drums never cut out, so unfortunately theres not too much room for creativity

All the old Bobby Caldwell albums are so hip. If you hang on to them, they will grow on you and you'll find that there are so many "sleeper cuts" that you wind up really digging.

Exactly! Like Sunny Hills and You Belong to Me and another favorite off his first album Down For the Third Time.

In all of his music he's speaking the truth! It's making me so emotional because i can find myself back in his lyrics.

You have to have no brain to have it dumbed down to be able to appreciate this song...
It requires some musical knowledge to sample but in the end, your not the genius. And yes, in this case i like sampling. Still its quite bad that today black music is just rip off of black music from older days.
snusansmammut 3 years ago 4
i agree but madlib's remix sounds nice in combination with some dope MED lyrics

This song is such a brilliant song. I wish todays Soul and Rnb artists could sit back and listen to this and draw inspiration from it.
The music behind the voice is spot on. But Bobby Voice fits this song like a glove. What a tune!

theres nothing wrong with sampling music, MADLIB sampled this for MEDAPHOAR's track, "cant hold on", the difference in musical style is vast, the result is almost incomparable to this track, madlib is opening ears and making fresh sounds from old ones.
adamarmitage123 3 years ago 8
True, i love madlibs sampling choices.

Bobby's music is so timeless...Hope I can groove to this another 25yrs... : )
Discfiend69 3 years ago 3
Oh,I forgot- I hope some lame flavor of the month pop star does'nt fell they must do the public a favor by "sampling" this one also...
Discfiend69 3 years ago
who's doing so?....
RapaTerntSanga 3 years ago 2
Aw Man,I got people trying to crucify me for saying that the blatantly sampled loop on Commons new song from B.Caldwell's "Open Your Eyes"is a total rip off.
Discfiend69 3 years ago
o yes i heard something about it, he sure sampled some bobby, why?
RapaTerntSanga 3 years ago
Hey I don't know.These dime a dozen pop flops
think it's their service to the world to sample and loop all the GREATS and then have the audacity to call it their own or original.
Go figure...
Discfiend69 3 years ago 2
look over here, im 1000% WITCHU, money definitely aint got nuthin to do wid good old sweet good music INDEED! ;)
