  • not helpful at all, very weak

  • @Janetging2 Satisfaction guaranteed. Your money will be fully refunded.

  • tam biet also mean goodbye.

  • Wow you speak vietnamese very good. Im impressed. The voice that you were speaking is northern vietnamese voice. Good work though

  • @kevin89i Thank you. Yes, My Vietnamese teachers were from the north.

  • I'm Vietnamese. Can I give you some comments? "How are you?" can translated that is 'Bạn có khỏe không?'. It's more populous. Your Vietnamese's pretty good. Fighting!!!

  • @tempura215 Yes.You're right. I used an old expression. Thanks for your helpful and kind comments.

  • Bud, you sound ok for american. Check out my video, see if you could adjust the way you talk in vietnamese. There are a lot of accents in vietnamese language and you have the northern one. Northern accent is really hard for a normal vietnamese to understand you. Especially you're an american and not fluently in vietnamese yet. But to me you're awesome because there're not many american can speak vietnamese. Maybe nothern vietnamese could understand you, but the majority could not.

  • you're pretty good. ever had lessons? not perfect though, if there weren't subs in some parts idk wtf ur saying like "manh gioi" that part, but pretty good white man

    pretty good

  • @UrMomzDED Thanks for your comments. Yes, I know I make a lot of mistakes. But I am at a disadvantage at thanking you because I don't know if I should say" You're welcome, brown man, or yellow man, or black man, or red man.....or would that be rude of me?" Thanks anyway.....Sir.

  • Very nice !

Didnt know that you could do the accent xd

    Oo yeah Vietnamey !

  • @Duyzzz Thank you!

  • Very good basics to get your feet wet

  • @thespooneytube Thanks!

  • Bud, I am an Australian lady living in Hanoi and your videos have really improved my experience here. I am indebted to you. Thank you very much. Any more lessons planned?

  • @khazba1 Actually I had decided to not make any more vids because when I started 4 years ago there weren't anyone making "How to speak Vietnamese" on YouTube, but now there are quite a few. Also, I wasn't sure how much good I was doing. Thank you so much for your kind words. Now that I am presently living in the Philippines, I am toying with the idea of taking a trip to Vietnam and making more lessons, if there is a need.

  • @MagicMaximo I like your method of teaching. I find it practical Vietnamese and the lessons are not overloaded. I would welcome any more lessons you post. Thanks again. Cheers

  • holy crap dude, your accent is pretty much perfect

  • @Shrumins Haha! Thanks, man.

  • this is a great vid, ive been trying to find some vids that would help me learn at least a few words in vietnamese, my mother in law was on one of the last airlifts out of saigon, she speaks english pretty well but id like to be able to at least great her with vietnamese, she also speaks french and i speak a little but it will be cool to be able to say a few things in her native lauguage,

thanks again for doing these vids.

  • @valhallawelcomesme Great! I'm glad you like the vids.

  • I am actually a Vietnamese born in America. My parents wanted me to grow up with English as my first language, so they didn't speak Vietnamese to me often as a child. Currently I am 13 years old and fascinated by the Viet language, and sometimes feel ackward being around so many Viets for I am not able to speak myself, though I can understand perfectly well.

I think your pronounciation is fine.. Better than mine at least haha

  • @YamaBerryCZ Thank you for your kind comments.

  • how long have you been speaking vietnamese? because your pronounciation is very odd. it may be because you speak with a different dialect or you have never talked with a vietnamese person before

  • @Zjonjonz1996 haha.".I have never talked with a Vietnamese person before, but I did see one speaking on TV."...haha. It's Interesting, the comments on my pronunciation. They range from "excellent" to "very odd" It's usually because I don't have the same pronunciation as the commentor.

  • My brain is currently full of stupid stuff. I love learning languages, but this scares me. The pronounciation is my biggest fear. Is there any chance that these peaceful phrases could be switched by mispronounciation to something very hostile?

  • @AdamsTeinz I never let fear of pronunciation hold me back. After all, they know you are learning Vietnamese, and foreigners are always making mistakes in pronunciation. Just try your best and they will appreciate your efforts.

  • @MagicMaximo Thank you for such swift answer. It always makes me happy when someone greets me in my language :-D But I am afraid to fall into the whirl of their language. I say chao ong, and they start talking extremely fast. :-D

  • @AdamsTeinz I just checked your profile. Is your first language Czech? Hey, you're speaking English fluently! Also I noticed your interest in hypnotism. In a former life ( 20 years ago.) I was a hypnotherapist. Lots of fun! My teacher was the famous Ormond McGill. But that's a story for another time! :=) Use the internet to hear lots of Vietnamese speaking at normal speed. Your brain will soon adjust and soon it will seem as though they are speaking so fast.

  • @MagicMaximo AREN'T speaking so fast.

  • @MagicMaximo My native language is indeed Czech, but I like a lot of languages. English, German, French, Italian, Japanese and now Vietnamese :-D These are my hobbies, and psychology in general. Also self defense. How many languages do you speak?

  • @AdamsTeinz As a polyglot, yourself, you know there are different degrees of fluency in language learning. I feel most comfortable speaking Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese..not so fluent in French, Dutch, Mandarin and Cebuano (the local language where I am presently living).. and baby talk in others. I have been studying languages a long time. ( B.A. in linguistics) It's interesting, I also was involved in the martial arts (Shotokan) for many years.

  • @AdamsTeinz hahhaha my friend, it depends on how bad you mispronounce the word. It may turn out not so bad, or very very :))) Dont worry too much, Vietnamese is hard. And I'm pure Vietnamese :))

  • oh wow i just think u are vietnamese ;)) u are so good u can understand alot of thing in vietnamese ;)) cause somebody don't know how use a chao ong chao ba chao anh chao chi cause they just know english only like hi that's all u r very good

  • @renalone Thank you for your very kind comments!

  • great ! ông nói tiếng việt rất tốt .

you are speaking vietnamese is very good.

  • @CongTri1997 Thank you very much for your kind comments.

  • i see that u r having difficulties in pronouncing words like "gioi", "anh"...

"gioi" is pronounced as zoi, it is exactly as j or z in english, our early alphabet had "z" too but it was replaced with "gi" recently

the word "anh" is more difficult because your alphabet doesn't have "nh" and most of english speakers also cant pronounce words which end with "nh", it'll take a lot of practice to pronounce it correctly so i think you can figure it out yourself

other words are pronounced perfectly xD

  • @Gold139 Thanks for your helpful comments. Sometimes I mix Southern and Northern pronunciations of "gioi" Northern [zoi] and Southern [yoi] and also the the Northern pronunciation of anh (rhymes with "fine") and Southern pronunciation of anh (rhymes with [on] Then again I could be way off base on these examples.

  • Omg I'm viet and I love you ( dont think negative people)

  • @myhome123ful Haha! Thank you!

  • Chào bác.Hello.I'm very glad when you have been trying to speak Vietnamese. just a few foreign people learn Vietnamese and speak Vietnamese well but your Vietnamese is very pretty and fluently.I know Vietnamese very difficult to study and the most difficult thing is pronunciation but when you speak Vietnamese it's so clear."hy vọng bác có thể nói được nhiều tiếng việt hơn nữa.Cháu xin cảm ơn vì bác hứng thú với tiếng việt cũng như đất nước con người việt nam quê hương cháu. tạm biệt bác/goodbye"

  • @wendyngo9x Thank you for your kind comments.

  • Then response could be "Vâng, khoẻ ạ" (formal, usually it comes from a northern man), "Bình thường" or "vẫn vậy" (informal). Then we say "cô/bác/bạn/... thì thế nào" or "ông/bà/chú.... thì sao?" as a reply; it likes "and you?" in English.

  • Hi Bud Brown!

First of all, your vietnamese is pretty good. However, I would like to give some notes

"Ông/Bà/Anh/Chị/ mạnh giỏi không ?" is old fashion (very formal).

Vietnamese nowadays almost do not use it anymore! In such cases, we just say "Dạo này ông/bà/... thế nào". In very informal cases, just say "Khoẻ chứ".

  • @wocjuynil Thank you for your helpful comments. I appreciate your input.

  • @MagicMaximo you're welcome

  • @MagicMaximo Firstly, your Vietnamese is really good. I am Vietnamese and studying English (an English Linguistic and Literature student). On the other hand, you are American. In reality, my English skills are still not good, especially in speaking and listening. I am wondering if you have free time. I would like to learn English from you. Certainly, you could improve your Vietnamese if you want (you said that you loved Vietnamese so much). It is not a bad suggestion, isn't it?

  • thanks u very much

  • @Windysky95 You're welcome.

  • Thanks,

  • "very much" là nhiều lắm, không phải nhiều quá bác ạ :)

  • @ltnhat96vn Yes, I really should have said " rất thích". I didn't say it correctly. Thanks for your comments.

  • Hey I'm going to Vietnam in June for the whole summer to work some orphanages!!! I went last year and knew nothing about the language but I'm trying to learn how to speak it when I go back this summer and your videos have been extremely helpful

  • @CandaceCreel Wow, I'm so proud of you for doing such a charitable cause! Keep up the good work and thank you for your kind comments.

  • You speak Vietnamese very well!

  • @shinnguyen1992 Thank you for your kind comments.

  • Ông là người mỹ mà nói tiếng việt rất khá....wow!

  • I am considering to learn Vietnamese but am not really sure whether it is worth it because there are so many dialects and I think it is also quite difficult. How long do you think would it take to learn it (full time in the country)? And how big is the extend of the varieties between the dialects? How difficult would it be in comparison for instance with learning English or Spanish?

The language sounds really beautiful though!

  • @elgagalari Hi. There are two main dialects..North and South. They are mutually understandable..only a few differences in pronunciation. The question of how long to learn a language is difficult to answer because of so many factors...motivation, language learning resources, time each day you spend studying, if you plan to take classes or study on your own. Also what level you want to attain, just conversation? read? write?

  • @elgagalari If you're really serious, you can attain conversational ability in a few months. The main difficulty for westerners is the tones. Otherwise it's not so difficult. The verbs don't change for any tense. Good luck.

  • @MagicMaximo Thanks a lot for your reply! I would plan to take classes, full-time let's say 20 hours a week and live there. My main goal would be conversation but reading and writing would of course be also great. I hope classes and living there won't be too expensive. Maybe I will try to work there as well, if that will work out with the work permit. Thanks a again and have a good day!

  • gio means good, not fine. i know this becvause i am vietnamese. Also, what part of vietnam did you go to? Ho Chi Monh or Hannoi. I am from Ho Chi Minh

  • I love how ecstatic you are. Most people these days keep making negative comments about other languages. I love your Vietnamese. It makes me feel happy.

  • @emblem9000 Thank you for your kind comments.

  • i love hearing outsider speaks Viet, it makes me happy :)

  • @learningviet Great!

  • I like the way you speak Vietnamese in South accent.

  • sir.do you pronounce the gi like y not the sound z?

  • @bjap1563 Southern pronunciation gi = yee Northern pronunciation gi = zee My teachers were from the North so I speak with the Northern accent.

  • I hope this man has more videos like this.

  • love it love it Want to learn it too

  • @Elementfifth Great!

  • When you said: " tôi thích người Việt Nam quá" i almost want to cry because happy, thanks

  • @quynhnhu1410 Thank you. But I really should have said "Toi rat thich nguoi Viet Nam." My grammar wasn't exactly correct but I'm glad you understood me.

  • @KatPianism Thank you!

  • How long have you been in Vietnam??? Bác ở Việt Nam được bao lâu rồi nhỉ ?

  • @satisfy2000 I was in Vietnam for one year in 1971, then I returned for the first time last March (2010) for just ten days.

  • @MagicMaximo

Why do you like to speak Vietnamese ? i found it's boring (or bored, i'm not speak eng very well :)

  • @satisfy2000 I really don't speak it very well but I find that it makes people happy when I try to communicate with them in their language. By the way you were correct saying something is "boring." Your English is good. Congratulations.

  • @MagicMaximo

in fact, very little foreign people... speaks Vietnamese in my country... really. you're good !!! By the way, i love your language ! (English )... I hope i had born in your country... Not this ! Not Vietnamese ! believe me... it's not good at all. Don't be Vietnamese. ( That's what i thought and saw, so don't blame me. I just say what i thought )

  • @satisfy2000 Nah, you should be proud because you're able to speak one of the most difficult languages (in term of pronunciation) for English/ German... speakers!! English is great. But would it be way cooler if you can speak 2 languages: English AND Vietnamese

  • @chuthuyduong169

    thank, i'll try my best

  • @MagicMaximo yeah, we do feel happy to hear a foreigner speaking Vietnamese.

And you speak Vietnamese so well. :)

  • Thanks Bud!

  • @habeascorpus05 You're welcome. Khong co gi ca!

  • Bud. Thank you for all of your videos. My girlfriend is Vietnamese and I have been learning the language for some months now and I find your videos very helpful. Would it be possible in the future to show the diacritics on the vowels though when the words are shown on screen.

  • I understood everything that u said in the beginning. Cuz I'm Vietnamese & I already know a bit of the language. So why am I even here? Well, I only know how to SPEAK Vietnamese. I can read a bit, but it's purely based on improvisation!! Idk the alphabet. I always wanted 2 learn more though.

  • i wonder are you sure your pronunciation is correct?

I believe that "Chao" pronounces as [zhao] and "khong" as "[kong]

  • @nnantou1 "correct" depends on if you are talking about the Northern, Middle or Southern pronunciation.

  • @MagicMaximo Thank you for your clarification. I am a beginning learner. So do you mean that in the north [zhao], south [chiao]?

  • @nnantou1 My instructors, who were all from Hanoi (the North) always said "Chao" and "khong"

  • This is so good! You have a great accent! I'm trying to learn, too.

  • awh how cuteeee

  • Wow! You're so good! Well done!!! XD

  • @tnhatheoptimist Thanks!

  • Thanks 4 teaching^_^ I actually learned something new even though I'm vietnamese -.-" (Viet kieu) I didn't know the word "manh gioi" or I did, but I didn't know that you could use it in "how are you?" I usually say something like: "Ong / Ba / Bac / Chu / Co / Anh / Chi/ ban(friend) co khoe khong?"

  • @Xiu91 Actually, I've been told that what I taught was the old fashioned way (when I was taught Vietnamese 40 years ago) and that the way you said was more common nowdays.
