Are you sure this is college level? I learned this in high school. However if one does not understand this, one cannot move on to higher level courses like Calculus, or Differential Equations.
suppose the annual rate is r and the quarterly rate is q and compounding is quarterly. then (1+q)^4 = (1+r). solving we have (1+q) = (1+r)^(1/4) or r = (1+r)^(1/4) - 1 and not r/4
it can be expressed through summation notation- key word in your case is summation. your adding numbers. there is a relationship between fibonacci sequences and e though.

there are many people who go back to collage after being in the workforce (in my case 10 years)
so basic algebra lessons are a offed corse for catching people up (its amazing what you forget)
