  • TY sooo much!

  • wait you you now still doing Mandarin Chinese or just Chinese?

you should go into teaching, your very good, many thanks for the help

  • do you have a new hair cut for ever vid or something

  • Greetings from Japan. I recently bought two Bei Jing Mandarin textbooks written for Japanese. I have got as far as "there are three bottles of beers in the fridge" "Is there a bank?" "How many of you are there in your family" etc.

I have noticed that the tone designations are different for the same word between Taiwanese Mandarin and Bei Jing Mandarin. For example, we are taught that xing qi or the week day is in fact xing(1) qi(1).

  • thank you, for posting these videos! i have been wanting to learn mandarin for a long time and, finally, i have found an instructor i like! please, keep posting.

the hair cut looks really good btw.

i really like how one can count numbers on a single hand in chinese, odd though about the week starting on monday -not sunday- like here in the states.

  • you are very sexy! i love your language lessons! Its very insightful! Thank you!

  • you are very sexy! i love your language lessons!

  • @DrMMHMD Then you should understand exactly what I mean! Though you'll have to excuse my ignorance, I'm learning in a classroom and I was never told of "Beihua", Zhang Laoshi just calls it "Beijing accent". She is also from Beijing and is teaching me all of the Beihua ways of saying things.

  • What exactly are you saying for Sunday because it sounds like "ti'en", not "qi" for 7?

  • @DrMMHMD Are you Chinese? If so, you should know that there is a big difference between the Mandarin spoken in Taiwan and in Beijing. AND the mandarin spoken in Beijing city is not the same as "standard Mandarin" spoken on the mainland. Kind of like how someone from Atlanta, Georgia doesn't speak the same English as someone from New York City and both are different from "Standard American English".

Standard mandarin, a little is "yidian", in Beijing it's "yidiar". hua/huar. wan/war. different.

  • Would be better with legends.

  • sophie, where do you live? xing1 qi1 = week

xing and qi are both 1st tones

  • week - number.... that's so logical!!!

  • It should be Xing1qi1 (with the first tone qi1 but not the second qi2), isn't it?!

  • Hello Sophie! Your videos are fantastic! (and so is your hair) Thank you for finally explaining the different tones and the meanings behind the words for sunday and the other days. I am trying to learn Mandarin, so could you tell me if this is Mandarin, Cantonese, or Pin Yin please. And I was also wondering, since you say week one for Monday and so on, how do you say the first week, or second week.

Thank You! I subscribed to you and am adding your videos to my playlist.

  • @dumblebandit Hi! I speak Mandarin. Do you mean like, this week, last week, and next week? If so... Here it is.

This week, in Pin Yin form is, zhe ge li bai.

Zhe is fourth tone. Ge is fifth tone. Li is third tone. Bai is fourth tone.

Last week, still in Pin Yin form is, xung ge li bai.

Xung is fourth tone. Ge is fifth tone. Li is third tone. Bai is fourth tone.

Next week, also in Pin Yin form is, xia ge li bai.

Xia is fourth tone. Ge is fifth tone. Li is third tone. Bai is fourth tone.

  • @YouStoleMyTube

shang ge xingqi - last week

zhe ge xingqi - this week

xia ge xingqi - next week

  • @dumblebandit Continued from the previous reply.

If you want, you can take out the "Ge" in all three sentences: This week, last week, and next week. If you do, the sentences will mean the same, but if you are a foreigner, do not do this. The reason why is because native Mandarin speakers may think that because you take out the "Ge" that you do not have a basic vocabulary.

  • @YouStoleMyTube Thank you! Xie Xie!

  • @dumblebandit You're very welcome! Good luck with your studies! And also PM me if you would like someone to practice Pin Yin with! Any phrases you would like to learn I can also offer help with.

  • man im confused! im taking chinesse then i brows the net and find this then i dont know wat im learning is right.

  • @bursky09 Don't lose hope. Many people have different teaching methods. There are different ways to say things in Mandarin. She is telling you a basic way. So, do not get discouraged, what you're learning is probably also correct.

  • @bursky09

her tones are not correct for xingqi week

I would stick to your books and current teachers

  • thank you sophie if you want to speak spanish i cant help you

    gracias sophie

  • When you were born did you automatically become fluent in Mandarin or did you have to practice. And how long would you say it takes to become fluent? Thanks for the videos :)

  • @MyNameIsBryann

If you are bilingual, learning any language will be much easier. But if you aren't, don't feel bad. You may take longer, but, you can always end up reaching a native or at least near native command of any language. I would say that if you do an intensive Mandarin course, say 4 hours a day 5 days a week. Then you can get a basic grasp in 3-6 months. You probably will be functional after about 6. Fluency... It depends on your learning capability. Some take 2 years. Some take 7-8.

  • thx good video and nice hair cut

  • you still use your account? you know, your lessons came in handy, im from philippines and i have filipino-chinese friends and this helped me alot! thanks!

  • good look

  • I thought shing chi (or whatever the pinyin is) were both in the first tone

  • @BarbieReview

pinyin is xingqi and they are both 1st tones

  • @gmanshk She is probably not from the mainland. People from the mainland have such strange tones. You use the 1st tone too much. You end up sounding like robots.

  • you look awesome, you are awesome, this video is awesome... your chinese is awesome...

  • Excellent lesson. Thank you very much

Is it possible you could do a video on how to say countries? And if so please include my country, Ireland.

  • i love you!

  • My Mandarin book also says "星期日" (hsing ch'i rrer) for Sunday rather than "星期天" (hsing ch'i t'ien). The former has the sun character (日) while the latter has the sky character (天). But maybe it's because that's how they say "Sunday" (星期天) in Taiwan. :-)

  • @stanleygsf 星期天 or 星期日 both are used in Taiwan. Also, "星期" can be replaced by "禮拜" li3 bai4 ~ ^^

  • Hey, I promised you stay focus,, thks for the lessons, you're very helpfull

Just wondering. What is the phrase you said after "hi." is it "da zhi hao?" what does it mean what you said haha?

  • It's "Dajia hao!"

    Just: "Hi everyone!"

    Dajia means Everyone.

I hope I could help you out :)

  • Ni3 Hao4

  • 短发很适合你

  • good .but mandarin xing qi "qi" 1st tone.

  • Nope, it's second tone, don't misleading ppl

  • Thank you for your kind answer on how to say Sunday.

    Stefan

  • shen si wo le!

  • ni hao ma! wo jiao alex. hen gao xing zhen shi ni!

  • Dear Sophie

please repeat Sunday in Chinese. It seems not to be with qi = 7 or do I not hear it clearly.

    Thank you, love from

    Stefan (Italy)

  • yes indeed, she did not say Sunday as "xing qi qi", because people in China do not say Sunday like that but "xing qi tian". "tian(天)" means sky, so personally "xing qi tian" means at that day people can go out of house and be free under the sky...

  • You can also say "xing qi ri" (or "re" please correct me Sophie") Xie Xie Mei Nu

  • wah, new cut !!

  • Wo yao xingchi wu...xiexie cu'ai!

  • nihao ma? sofi, xie xie ni,wo jiao eddy hen gao xing zhen shi ni,ni zhen piao liang

  • Also, the "sh" sound in English is different to the sound in 星。I think writing "xing1" is the best way as it adheres to the standard pinyin, and the "1" shows that it is the first tone

  • I'd like to suggest that it would be more helpful to use the pinyin romanization, as learning the official pinyin is now almost essential for learning Mandarin. All pinyin has a standard pronunciation, which can be learnt, whereas an individual romanization, as above, relies on individual interpretation. For example, for 星, the romanization "shin" would suggest there is no "g" sound, whereas there is at the end of the character.

  • Can you pls pls tell me how many letters in Mandarin, some site shows upto 103 only, but many letters are missing in the masterlist provided by site. Very eager to know that

  • i think ther`es no such thing as letters in chinese.. maybe it`s called the bopomofo.. it`s only used for pronunciation such as bo for b. :)

  • are you taiwanese? xing qi tian? i thought it was xing qi ri. i am a second year student of simplified beijing mandarin, and it sounds to me like u are taiwanese...

  • yes i am taiwanese

  • you speak wonderful mandarin! and i kinda wish i could learn taiwanese accent... i think it sounds less harsh than the beijing accent i am learning.

  • @yumiilove nice haircut

  • @yumiilove yo im taiwanese...for monday....i say "lee by ee" and lee by err and so on

  • hi sophie, thanks...very good lesson,,,and haircut too, why is sunday=xing1 qi1 tian1, and not=xing1 qi1 qi1

  • Your hair cut looks fine but i think you look better with long hair. Hen Hao! Ni Chi le ma?

  • cute

  • 你的新的髮型好看著呢。看你的節目很享受。你是華僑吧?北方人?我去年在北京留學了一年,現在在倫敦繼續學習中文。已經學了三年了。

  • please be aware that her pinyin in her box is written as how you pronounce them, this is not how the correct pinyin.
