That is not a sanitary sewer. It's a storm sewer. Did you notice the big wide opening on the curb were water can run off the road( near the very end of the video). The part the men were cleaning was a catch basin. Catch basins collected sand and dirt off the road so it does go down the pipes. If it was a sanitary sewer the stuff they were cleaning out would be sludge not sewage, and they would have put it in a sealed tank.

That is so unhygienic! All the filth they extract from deep in the sewer is piled onto the back of a truck where it is carried through the city exposed to the air.

Rboye is right...hydrovacs are available and should be used for this kind of work.

That's a storm drain, and the stuff in there will be litter, leaves, twigs, mud and basically anything that the rain washed down there. The pit at the bottom of the storm drain catches all that so it doesn't clog the pipes.
