i had a dream i saw perkins playing this song at a venue i was at. he was dancing reaally goofy and so was i.i love this song because it reminds me of my dead best freind i want to make a song as beautiful as this one for him.
My English is not good enough to understand all the lyrics, but my heart does and it is crying and laughing in the same moment and .... words are too weak to describe this ....
Actually, now that I think about it and actually listened to the song again (It's been ages since I've listened to Perkins). His mother died in one of the planes hijacked during 9/11, didn't she?
Poor Perkins.. he's such a beautiful artist with such a sad history
i know the lyrics say *suit* but it really sounds like *song* here. if you watch his lips i really think he is saying song...but it really doesn't matter
I thought he wrote this song before his mom died ... songs 1-7 on Ash Wednesday were before that, and 8-11 (i think there are 11 ...) were after her death. That's what I thought at least
@dancingirish I wonder is if there is a reason he changed "suit" to "song"? Was it a mistake? Did he change it so it could be more easily understood? What is a "death suit" anyway? Funeral clothing? If this was written before 9/11, it must be about his father's death. (But that doesn't fit, there was no early morning phone call). That makes it all the more touching. His mother was on flight 11 so she could see Elvis perform. This could be one of the songs she would have heard.
his imaginative lyrics are so underrated. really, i can think of very few artists today (especially very popular ones) who write so creatively and poetically. the depth of this song is so moving.
Thanks so much for posting. Very moving song by Elvis Perkins. The poetry is so rich, raw and powerful. Poignantly appropriate for today.

I made a death *suit* for life, for my fathers ill widowed wife".
He wrote the song about his mother, who died in a plane crash I think.
