  • This girl in my class was trying to say the name "Carolina" and she pronounced in like North Carolina.

  • she sounds like she has an american accent.

  • people from new york dont speak like people from miami or texas

  • Also, being a native spanish speaker, I think it goes both ways. People should try hard if they're going to use the language because otherwise you're just a jerk. I WANT to kill (for example) Sofía Vergara from modern family every time she talks. You've lived in america for years woman learn some fucking english!

  • @missag9 Hollywood loves sofia vergara for her accent modern family wants her to have more accent by the way everyone has a accent people that speak spanish have different accent there is the mexican, colombian, cuban, puerto rican, ok so why don't americans speak like people from england speak whats the big deal. i love accents

  • @michivlz214 Well, mainly because while learning a lenguage you should try your best to learn the proper pronunciation. People talking in a TERRIBLE spanish (or any other lenguage for that matter) on purpose or not even trying to say things right are just disrespectful.

  • Here's the thing. I'm a native spanish speaker right? So this is what annoys me. The guy was absolutley right about not trying too hard saying BURRITTTTTTTTTOSSSSSS "trying to sound like a native" ok.. first of all, natives don't speak like that, at all, they speak naturally and fluently, speaking like that just makes you sound like you're making fun of a language (AND the culture of people who speak it).

  • I'm definitely in Jayar and Ana's camp here. Although, I feel it's more like the language itself that I wouldn't be doing justice to if I were to take the lazy route, I don't particularly care about the native speakers and their opinions, just the language. But then I suppose that's why I'm going into Linguistics because I care about that kind of academic stuff.

It also bothered me when the kids in my high school would butcher the accent, but they were also failing, so I felt it was a fair trade

  • So true, in México a lot of students don't even give a shit about English pronunciation, nor even French, German or anything else, of course there are some few exceptions!, that's why I always try to say words exactly the way natives pronounce them, besides I LOVE English, :)

  • Haha This is great! Let me know what you think of my Spanish accent

  • So true. I remember in my high school French class there were students who could or would not learn the simple rules of pronunciation. For example, it didn't make one bit of difference if a word had an é or an e or an è. They said them all the same way, like they couldn't see the fucking accent mark.

  • Wait a minute, these people are supposed to have a good Spanish accent? ¬¬' WTF!! How do the bad ones sound like?

  • It's so hard to get rid of an accent. If you are not a native speaker the native speakers will realise , the point on having a good pronounciation is to be understood , not to sound native, so..stay right in the middle to avoid laughs.and when it comes to manage with a native speaker do your best :)

  • It's funny cuz Steve does this when he's speaking English :D

  • I laugh when people try an speak Spanish but sounds really bad. But hey atleast there tyring

  • I speak both English / Spanish fluently and I find it rather cute when Americans try to speak Spanish and they have that "stereotypical" accent. Most Spanish people laugh at it, but in a non-disrespectful way... contrary to Jayar's beliefs haha. Well, that girl from the video should not bother with those people who make fun of her, because worrying about what others think it's called "suffering". It's outside your boundary, nothing to do with you.

  • Like some are saying, i don't think the first reading was in a perfect spanish accent, and in comparison to which pronunciation? The Latin American one or the Spanish one from and if from Spain, from Madrid or from Andalucia, etc. Yeah, she's trying but a native speaker will tell you're not native anyways, so why try too hard. If you want to speak like a native from wherever, it takes time, no college course is gonna make you perfect...

  • i'm spanish.

this girl has nothing to be proud about. She sounds like an american tourist all around.

  • @AndersKyoGrey Just though I'd ask you two questions, hope you don't mind.

    1) What do English people sound like when they speak Spanish.

    2) What does the English language sound like to you? e.g. German and Danish sound incredibly harsh to me and Dutch sounds a bit like you have flem.

  • @TheSirPrise In Spain we use to say that german isn't a lenguage you can talk but bark so figure it out how german sound to a spaniard ;-) A native english speaker talking in spanish sounds lazy (specially americans) as they don't care too much about pronunciate every syllable and disconcerting too, since they aren't rhytmic wich make very difficult to know if they are telling you or asking you something ;-) If in written spanish we have question marks at the begining ¿¿ is for a reason haha ;-)

  • I didn't really attempt to master the accents on French or Greek, but not because I didn't care. I just sounded really, really stupid.

  • So true. Same thing in my french and german class people are just like that.

  • Yuck. Spanish is such an ugly language.

  • @bcourter82 honestly fuck you. you're disrespectful, get off this page.

  • @xKiB5 Quit hating my freedom.

  • @bcourter82 NO existen idiomas feos!, :)

  • Menuda mierda de acento amiga! jajaja

  • To really learn spanish, you have to talk it with other people who really know spanish.

  • is it weird that I think she still has a heavy accent when talking in the first part of the video.

also, Steve is right. I hate when people that don't speak the language put too much emphasis on the "r"

  • Haha Mexican Americans like me know English and Spanish fluently suck it!

  • @lostchild06 Her point isn't that her accent is great. It's that she's trying by at least minimizing her regional accent from English, knowing that ll is pronounced like our y, trying to pronounce the d's softly, etc. She at least has the bare minimums correct...

  • i lold when they cut ricky off

  • I'm from NC and was a Spanish major in college, and what she said is totally true.

  • el pero el pero es mi corazon

el gato el gato no es mu bueno

cilantro es famoso cilantro es carinoso

cilantro es el hombre con el queso del diablo!

    ~American Dad

  • i'm taking a spanish class right now and yeah i know what you guys are talking about. Some of the people (specially those bitchy snobby chicks that I wanna punch[telepathically]) try too hard and act like euh oh is this how this is pronounced. fuck man.. listen and learn..put some efforts in it!

  • Que ridiculos!

  • Pronunciation is a part of a language just like everything else is.

  • Steve Oh made this video lol wow that was great.

  • Ayumi Hamasaki poster in the background=Awesome!

On topic, the fact that people would do that in college is beyond me. Why take a course you're not interested in?

  • I'm Canadian and was in the French Immersion program...I enjoyed learning in French and by the time I graduated I could speak it more or less fluently.

But I was always amazed by the people who I had been in class with for years who went out of their way to avoid using a French accent. To me, they always came across as complete idiots. Especially because it was hugely obvious that they KNEW the proper pronunciations.

  • @wuhoooh Hey i went through french immersion as well w/ a french Father at home, i find the only thing worse then someone avoiding using a french accent is someone who puts on a thick ridiculous imitation of joual in the attempt to impress others.

  • MARRRRIA!!!!

    MMMMMAAAAARRRRRRRRRIIIIAAAAAAAA?!?!?!?!

    CON MI AMIGO!!!

    PABLO?!?!

    POR QUUUUEEEEEEEEEE?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • This chick annoyed the crap out of me before I even saw the video. And I'm a nerdy perfectionist, myself.

  • BOOORIIIIIIII-TOES

  • I would feel too embarrassed to approach it like the kids who don't care do because I now how bad that sounds.

  • Reminds me of my Russian class. Some try for the accent, others could care less..... it's slightly annoying if you don't try, and instead just keep your Minnesota accent and over pronounce things and say them way too clearly so basically you end up saying them wrong with an accent...

  • @MyPaperBleedsInk

I'd love to hear how Sara Palin sounds when she trying to speak Spanish. Instant comedy!!!

  • Some people have trouble speaking in other languages, fucking cunt.

  • este es papel hyginico!

  • ROFL the second way had me laughing my ass off, I had to repeat it, oh man.

  • I wouldn't mind if people didn't know how to read correctly in first or second year ... but I see people in 400 level courses who still don't know where to put the emphasis and you can tell they are not understanding the text at all. (emphasis on a different syllable can easily change the meaning of a word). Why take a higher level spanish course when you still don't understand the very basics?!

  • I've had both the teacher and a native speaker tell me my accent is almost perfect. XD The only thing I need to work on is making the double rr''s a bit smoother, I can't do it without putting an extra air behind it and it sounds a little off

  • Also, I think people who try to hard worry they won't be understood unless they have a thick accent of whatever language they're talking - but it's like Indian English-speakers who still have their Indian accent. You can (usually) understand what they are saying even through the accent.

  • I took spanish. I tried for the first half, but my tongue is tied so I couldn't do the "flick of the tongue" sound for the "r" sound which eventually made my teachers annoyed at me for "not trying" even though I physically was unable to produce the accent. So I ended up not trying at all and sometimes satirically speaking in a "post" British accent.

  • this girl sounds like a douche.

  • i agree with strve-o on this one

  • you have to be in a foreign country or speak with native speakers to develop your accent. I am fluent and still have a hint of a gringo accent after living in Bolivia and EL Salvador. As long as you can get your point across and you try it does not matter.

  • I'm Colombian, and her accent sucks. Like my english :D

  • Who the hell cares about how other people pronounce it? It's great that you can say it perfectly.

She totally seems like that bitch you're going to hate in the workspace who tries to correct everyone.

    Donde esta la biblioteca bitch.

  • @rocospi Dónde está la biblioteca

  • Im puerto rican and her accent was still awful. I'll give her for trying though.

  • @lostchild06 I'm a Puerto Rican and at least she's trying to learn. Courses are meant for learning, not for recreational time.

  • @Howuf I know... reason I said I'll give her for trying. Still she's complaining about accents when her own accent is horrible. Pot, kettle, black.

  • woot woot northern virginia!

  • Why does this stuck bitch really care? I am a history/political science major, and my HS Spanish class was a joke. It's not like I wanted to take Spanish, but for whatever reason it's a requirement to take a language that has no relation to my major. I'm not a native speaker, and I didn't go to a rich kids privileged HS where they would have prepared me for this BS.

  • @langox510x I care because I don't want them representing Americans when they try to speak Spanish to someone out of country or, hell, even in our own country. It's embarrasing. And this is college, not high school. There should be a difference in academics. And I didn't go to a "rich kids priveledged HS" either, so I don't know why you even bothered mentioning it.

  • @katexgg I believe that everybody in America should speak another language, but the school systems in America don't allow for such a thing. I mean I wasn't offered Spanish until my Freshmen year of HS, and although I did relieve A's and B's I really learned nothing aside from regurgitating a few sentences. It wasn't my fault, but the fault of my education, at by college age people shouldn't have to learn these languages, they should already know it.

  • @langox510x If you wanna learn it, learn it yourself.

  • @langox510x I agree, but in high school, because I was doing a lot of IB and AP courses, I barely could fit in the language requirements to graduate, meaning I did two years of French (which I barely retained) and two years of self-taught Japanese (which I barely retained). Now that I have the need to learn a language, I'm starting at the basics like everyone else, but with help (my Puerto Rican boyfriend / best friend) and outside sources to further my learning.

  • @langox510x It's very hard starting languages after 11 years old. It doesn't come as naturally. Not to mention if you learn it as a kid you can only benefit. I totally agree. Although I am Canadian. The kids who started French at 9 never grasped like the ones who started at 6 and that's only 3 years difference. I can't imagine starting to learn it at 14. I'm learning German now at 20 and doing my exchange in Germany was the only possible way I was able to develop a true understanding of the lan,

  • her accent when she was "trying" wasn't that good either...

  • I'm chilean. Her accent is fine.

  • @FeDe4 probably something to do with how distinct from english your first language is.

  • i took french in highschool and a spanish at my first college I would always speak spanish with a french accent

  • now do it with an argentinian accent....and then in a mexican one ;P

  • Eh, its BURRITOS. Lol Russell Peters reference

  • It's not "Chih-POHT-leh", Steve, it's "cheeeeeee-POHT-leh" ;D

  • but her accent isnt good lol

  • @3star2nr Yeah, needs more cowbell.

  • americans and brits speaking french is the funniest thing ever. "parrdonney mwa, parlay voo anglay?"

  • hahahaha

  • this is like french in canada who cares so why bother - never had a need to use french except once meet cute french girl in europe - but if i spoke like a french-canadian she would laugh at me (as french-canadians speak a peasant version of french from the 1600s). it would have been more useful to learn japanese or chinese

  • @rostant999

Those French Canadien girls Are Hot. & theyre friendlier than the chicks in Vancouver.

  • @rostant999 I have a reason to learn Spanish. I'm moving to Puerto Rico. And French in Canada is perfectly relevant if you're moving to Quebec, where the majority speak French.

  • @katexgg yes you have a reason, i didn;t i grew up in english canada no one speoke french there but we were forced to take it because of political problems with quebec at the time. a complete waste of time. i think many of the kids in the spanish class are like me have no interes tlearning this foreign language so don try.

  • @rostant999 I mean, I agree. And it's partly why I hate the rule that you have to have 4 semesters of a language to graduate, because very few will actually benefit from it. But until I move, I'm forced with the kids who don't want to try at all while I do everything I can to get the best grade possible while soaking in as much information as I can about the language.

  • The best way to learn Spanish is to have parents who were born in Mexico. It worked for me.

  • @RDBeatnik My father is from Puerto Rico, and he never used it with any of us as children. Epic fail marrying a white woman. Wait, then I wouldn't have been born!

  • @RDBeatnik or if ur me and ur mom was the only one working and ur dad was in in the hospital all the time as kid so u were praticly raised by ur Mexican nannies

  • @politico92... you must have been in a "required" finger painting class when you should have been focusing on improving your comprehension skills.

  • 4:20 Steve Oh nails it. Try as much as possible but stay honest about the fact that you're not a native speaker.

  • Both accents suck balls.

  • wow what a long ass advertisement, fuck ya'll i'm done

  • @SeriouslyPissedOff If you're using Firefox, get the Ad Blocker Plus extension for your browser. Then you aren't bothered by most ads on YouTube. I saw most because I've had one or two get through the filter a couple times, for some reason. But 98% of the time, it works like a charm.

  • @majorgeek wow that will be beast if i can get it to work. Thanks for the info yo

  • It's good to see Steve being involved in the discussions. He's a good member of the team with a strong sense of humor.

  • This girl needs to get a life, for reals...

  • @nmorrison62n For reals, so do you.

  • ricky looks so pissed after he got cut off XD

  • Chill girl, seriously if you can't handle dumbness in your class, take harder classes.

  • @kazekage321414 I would if I could. But I kinda can't.

  • WHY DO YOU GUYS KEEP CUTTING RICKY OFF!?? 3:43

  • i thought the first one was the way the stupid kids sounded. her spanish accent sounds whiter than shit!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm probably in the middle ground but in Spanish class, I care more about the composition of the sentences and learning the meaning of words rather than how I speak them. I'm personally more likely to read spanish and type it than I am have to speak it.

I also think that those who are used to talking frequently in English are going to have an advantage.

Sure some people are just lazy but I don't think that is the only reason people don't have a perfect accent.

  • To really get a good accent you need a complete understanding of the alphabet.

  • as a native speaker, this is hilarious hahaha

  • @edgarbm95 agreed lol, it is my second language but ive been living in South america for 6 years now XD

  • My Spanish class was a joke in high school. Most of what our teacher taught us was wrong anyway and the rednecks in my school refused to even try correct pronounciation.pronunciation. Steve sounds like the Taco Bell dog. LOL

  • I was a language teacher and my experience tells me that pronounciation is more important than accent.

  • I went to a French-immersion elementary school (also in Northern VA; I'll assume she goes to NOVA) and started learning French in preschool, so the accent was never a problem for me or my peers in class. HOWEVER, whenever I see French words now, I can't help but pronounce them with the appropriate accent, which makes me come off as pretentious. For example, when I was 8, I pronounced "bourbon" with a French accent while reading a recipe to my mom as she cooked. She never let me live that down.

  • I relate to this girl and in HS, I experienced the same thing in my Spanish classes and now in my Italian 101 class this semester, the majority of the people aren't taking it that seriously and sounds nowhere near how they are supposed to sound. That's why I love above 100 level classes b/c I don't have to deal with that at all.

  • Where's tytcommunitycollege?

  • DORITOS POR FAVOR~!

  • this is dumb. some people dont pick up accents

  • Her spanish sucks

  • why does it matter, you don't see students from mexico trying to do English accents. It's just irrelevant.

  • @jwdesign336 lmao true

  • i am in the saaaame boat... i live in northern va , am taking spanish, and have ignorant asses in class too!!!

  • I'm with Ana on this, I tried but I always feel weird trying, it feels like I'm making fun of it.

  • lol press 8

  • 1:41

Exactly how I speak spanish, don't fukin judge me.

  • I would read it with a non-spanish accent...coz thats what im comfortable with *shrugs*

  • I've met people who pronounce sudoku as so-du-ki. I'm still trying to figure out how they thought sudoku is pronounced that way.

And I've seen this girl's videos before. She taught herself japanese, and then made videos on what she learned.

  • @sketchbookessay Thanks for actually recognizing me. xD

  • "Do-r-r-r-itos Por favor" lmao im dying

  • It has been my experience that speakers of the Spanish REFUSE to make an effort to understand any accent other than their own. i am a white guy and my Spanish is poor, but i watch (for example) Dominicans stare blankly at Mexicans while i'm thinking "i understand what she's saying, why the hell can't you?" Cubans act like they can't understand Colombians, Costa Ricans act like they can't understand Hondurans. It's ridiculous and racist and this Anglo is calling y'all out on it.

  • @kinkycommie

To be fair, its harder to understand what she's saying with the preppy California accent and im not really fluent in spanish. But i do agree with you that latinos act stubborn towards different accents probably due to all the "rivalries". At least its not a Spain spanish accent...

  • @TW0man4RMY Funny enough, my professor is from Spain and it's hard not to pick up on that.

  • @TW0man4RMY Funny enough, my professor is from Bilbao, Spain and it's so hard not to pick up her accent.

  • de putta maaadree...

  • come on... I have a hard time to speak in Spanish because of my strong accent.

  • very good! learn spanish so you can order food at fast food restaurants while chinese and indian students learn math and english and take the real american jobs... congratulations americans... learn that spanish!

  • @hursh4 lol what are you even talking about? I'm assuming you don't actually think the only benefit to learning spanish is to be able to order fast food and are just going on the fact that they mentioned food in the video which was just a side joke and has nothing to do with anything.

  • Comment removed

  • @hursh4 I'm a fool? You're the one who is assuming that by learning spanish or any other language you are therefore not learning math or science. Your comment was completely random. I can see your point with other countries kicking the US's ass in those subjects but in the context of this video, your point is stupid.

  • I tried to practice and do well with the accent, but everyone else in class sucked, so I made myself suck because it felt awkward not sucking =(

  • @LadySeraph yea, why be unique and outstanding when peer pressure is so easy to give into?

  • @Cuddlebunzzzz There's no such thing as unique and outstanding.

  • when I was in the marine corps, a couple of friends and I would occasionally speak to each other in spanish. Some sergeants "forbade" us from doing so, so we would speak to each other in spanish with the accent she imitated. Good times :)

  • while american students are studying spanish... chinese and indians students study math.

  • @hursh4 And English...

  • I absolutely LOATHE Hyndrangreas...

  • Im learning Russian and its a big part of learning the leguage to pick up the accent so its easyer for Russians to understand me. If you are going to learn to speak another lenguage you should do it right.

  • Haha Steve-o is hilarious! Doritos....Chipotlé!

  • I teach language for a living. It is true that some students take it seriously and some do not. It is also possible that some of these students simply do not know how to pronounce Spanish well and need help.

Pronunciation is one of those things you need to hit early on when studying a language, because teachers in later classes will assume that you have already gone over it.
