The animation designs were simple enough, but the toys weren't. I nearly had to return my first transformer toy because I couldn't figure out how to turn it back into a car.

And the original Ironhide/Ratchet toys were horrible looking. They looked nowhere near as good as they did in the cartoons. Its like the toy designer dropped acid when he made those two.

Most of the Decepticon jets from the G1 days were repaints of each other, with slight changes in wing design. Thrust, for example, had rotors on his wings. First there was Skywarp (black), Thundercracker (blue) and Starscream (white/red) and later there was Ramjet (white/black), Thrust (maroon) and Dirge (blue/gold).

You also have to understand that most of them were already like this when Hasbro got them from whatever company made them in Japan. The transformers already existed. Hasbro took them and divided them into good guys and bad guys and gave then their backstories.

Also, the majority of the Autobot cars from G1 ad at least one repaint under a different name (Ratchet and Ironhide were repaints of each other).
