Yeah exactly, the level of aerobic fitness required to swim at that level is enormous, especially on the 200 fly and the 400 IM. There is simply no way he would be able to smoke anything during his hard training periods. He was on a break following the Olympics, in which he wasn't training. If he had been doing it in the build-up to the games, he wouldn't have got all 8 golds and 7 world records. Simple as.

Actually, I'm not sure if you remember an athlete called "Carl Lewis" ? He was THE best track and field athlete EVER. He excelled in 100/200m dash, AND long jump (yes, he even ran relays, for those who think Phelps had an unfair medal opportunity advantage). In LA '84 he won 4 golds.

To put it in track and field terms, Bolt would need to win (and break world record) in 3 relays (like Phelps), win 100 and 200, long jump, 110 hurdles, and high jump.
