  • I know the Catholic Diocese will make very good use of this cathedral and organ.

  • PERFECT to my hears. So sad that one of the great organs in the world is being silences. and Paul Jacobs plays it with full command of the instrument!

  • Paul is a great organist though he not as fluid as Diane Bish in the final measure

  • This beats happy clappy praise music hands down!

  • @Branchporter ....ABSOLUTELY 100% AGREE!!!!!!!!

  • BEAUTIFUL..!!!!

  • Who are the four knuckleheads who clicked dislike, either you made a fat finger error and really meant to like it or you have an intrinsic bias against the king of instruments.

  • hahaha thats bwv1006

  • @MrOrganist, the Crystal Cathedral and its 31 acre campus were puchased just a few weeks ago by the Catholic Diocese of Orange. It will eventually be rennovated into the Cathedral for the Catholic Diocese. Catholic Cathedrals tend to employ music programs that feature quality, time-honored, sacred music (rather than the happy-clappy dirges you hear in many parish churches today). Therefore I am confident that the organ will be retained in its current state as much as possible.

  • @tmsenzig I believe the organ will get used as least three times the amount it did even when Mr. Swann was there. Reason: The amount of responses, hymns, and acclamations in the Catholic mass compared to the times the organ plays in the RCA worship service. We have the 4 hymns: gathering, prep of gifts, communion, and leavetaking, plus pennetential rite, gloria, resp psalm, gosp accl, Santus, mem accl, great amen, Lord's Prayer, and Lamb of God, plus prelude & postlude lots of organ.

  • All kind of interpretations are possible in my opinion.

  • Completely amazing. The pipe organ has always been just a fascinating instrument to me. I must hear something like this live before I die!!

  • I Too Agree That Diane Bish Version Is Good BUT Not As Colorful As Paul Jacobs. He really Has A Natural Feel For The Registration Of This Piece & A Natural Rear & Feel For The Piece. Diane Plays Hers At Warp Speed. So My HATS GOES OFF TO YOU PAUL JACOBS. CONGRADS ON THE EMEY AWARD. You Deserve It.

  • @pipeorganfan26 Grammy

  • This video is why they invented the word 'excellent'.

  • paul jacobs the best organist the world really amazing expression of the bach the best organ the best organist atuallity

  • The sheer power of this instrument and piece combined is incredible.

  • Is the organ gonna be sold with the building?

  • @Nateness01 It's being sold? To whom? And when?

  • Thank you for posting this.

I had it saved to a playlist when the poster removed it from his account.

Thanks also for editing the interview from this piece.

    Best!

  • What playing! This young man has made music. Thank you Paul!

  • Sadly, that organ has sat silent for several months, a casualty of recent things. That Hazel-Wright organ WILL come back to life and in a big way. Nonetheless much thanks to Mr. Jacobs for this brilliant performance.

  • @steelersfanhawaii As a poor organist I am in total agreement with your comments

  • I got to hear him play this as an encore on a recital at St. Norbert Abbey in DePere, WI about 3 years ago. Phenomenal!

  • Is this BWV 1006? This same movment is also called "Prelude for Lute Suite #4."

  • @rippingstyle or "Partita #3 in E"

  • I'm currently undecided who's interpretation I prefer. Diane Bish, or Paul Jacobs. Nevertheless - I thoroughly enjoy both of their performances. Getting this piece down for a recital this past year nearly killed me! So great job to any and every Organist who has played this, or has learned it. Hard work indeed Mr. J. S. Bach :)

  • This is the same piece Diane Bish plays on the opening sequence of her "The Joy of Music" - Not to take anything away from Diane, but I prefer Paul's interpretation here a little more :)

  • Comment removed

  • I just feel that Paul puts much more passion and energy into this piece than Diane's interpretation. Diane, though extremely well skilled simply plays it at 'warp speed', however Paul drives and pulls back at all the right times and really injects life and musicianship into this Bach Sinfonia. You simply can't play this piece any better than Paul did here, it is THE BEST.... BRAVO!!!!!

  • The school is called "The Juilliard School" not the "Juilliard School of Music." The school has drama and dance as well. Please get this right.

  • i think paul is completely nature genius talent !!!

WE ALL LOVE YOU PAUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bravo

  • It seems to me that Paul is playing this beautiful music on this wonderful organ to praise, not take away from, the holy one. Some people just have to criticize.

  • I truly believe you are being way over critical here. The Lord created music, and blessed are the ones who can deliver the message. Appauled you say? I am amazed!

  • I was in the choir loft right in the second to the highest row, when he was playing this...it was an absolutely amazing experience even for us in the choir who were used to two fantastic organists on staff at the CC. If you notice at the end of this we in the choir fairly leaped to our feet! Fantastic, amazing, brilliant sternum rattling playing!

  • I don't think this is the Dupre edition. Hebble? Very nicely done.

  • all you organ guys?! Play it with gusto! rattle the windows for me?! joe

  • @flentrop2009 Yes but they do things different at the Crystal Catherdral and the Hour of Power. Besides the song is called We thank the God, we thank thee. So its still part of the service

  • @flentrop2009 Hey if you don't like it, don't watch it. Beside Bach himself, the very person who composed this work, said that playing music is a form of worship. So this taking away from the Holy One, I have to call some major BS on that remark.

  • @tamiasthechipmunk You don't need to educate me on Bach's views regarding music and worship. And its clear that Jacobs is treating this as a concert, regardless of what he said in the "interview" prior to this. And that, is not BS.

  • HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jacobs plays the sinfonia it at his way, rytm. nd with dynamic, I like it. Would like to compair with Koopman, but did not found it.

  • Hearing the sheer power of this organ gives me goosebumps

  • Transcendent!

  • HOW CAN SOMEONE DON'T LIKE IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • Great version of a spectacular piece! I love how he changes the registration in the first part without missing a beat and makes this instrument sing.

  • This is so GREAT!!!!!

  • The broadcast of the Cathedral is absolutely sad now. I agree it is a hootenanny! That great organ is slowing slipping into silence. The easter broadcast was more of a crucifixion as that organ went unplayed on the highest Holy day of the cristian calendar. Disgraceful!!!! SHAME ON YOU SCHULLERS! Think positive and bring back our choir director and our choir. I don't care if they are gay. Their gay asses could sing better than those straight fakers that you got now.

  • Wonderfull piece. Very well played!! Greetings from Holland

  • Too bad you don't hear this kind of music at the Crystal Cathedral anymore. Now what you get is bucktoothed hillbillies screaming into mikes and twanging on geetars. it's a regular Hootenanny there now.

Surely Virgil Fox is rolling in his grave.

  • Dusza chałturnika. Wykonawca ku uciesze gawiedzi parodiuje utwór największego kompozytora wszechczasów. That's a shame. Check polish dictionary.

    .

  • PERFECT!!!!

  • Paul's version is the best. Diana Bish has an impeccable execution, Paul

too, but Paul know to use better the pipes’ registers, so his pipe organ

become more expressive. Diana sing almost in same register ( all is

tutti all the time), so, her execution is missing the effects, dynamics, all is a flat strident sound. Paul’s sound is simply beautiful (bass sounds very nice, but Diana’s bas is missing or weak); Paul's dynamic is excellent (gradually from piano to forte).

  • Who on this Earth can unlike this? It is absolute divine.

  • My God! It cames from heaven. It is absolutely divine. Bach, the master of the musicians. All Glory for THE LORD. Sorry for bad English.

  • Seems more like a concert than a service ....

  • Paul, you are a worthy master of this great instrument. I notice you were not daunted despite the keys that seemed to me as I watched,to need serious regulating. They seem to depress half way to Disney Land. I plan to hear a lot more of your work. I know Dr Virgil Fox would be thrilled to hear you, a bright light for young organists to emulate. Blessings to you indeed.

  • Actually I am quite fond of Wendy Carlos' version (from the album Switched on Bach) but if I was choosing on YouTube between this one & Diane's, I would pick hers because she doesn't slow the tempo on every transition like Paul does. I feel Paul plays with more feeling and Diane's is a bit too fast, I still prefer hers to his because of the seamless transitions. While there are things I like about his as well, my overall ranking: 1) Wendy Carlos, 2) Diane Bish, 3) Paul Jacobs.

  • I like Diane Bish's performance, but nothing beats this one. Paul Jacobs is the reason I chose to become an organist. Praise God, Praise Bach

  • @marshal1314 While I certainly love Diane Bish's performance - and she does have 'fire' in her playing - I think she rips thru this piece at warp speed as you hear on the beginning of "The Joy of Music". With the tempo, dynamics, and articulation that Paul displayed hear, the beauty and grandeur of this piece really sinks in and gives it more power (granted CC organ has about 150 more ranks than CRPC organ).

  • The ending is amazing! At 4:03 you think it can't get any more powerful and then the Trompette en Chamade comes and overpowers everything with such ease!

  • Fantastic!

  • Fantastic!

  • Hard work equals success. Bach worked hard, and savored his own success in his own time. you to can do the same!

  • Do any of you think that I'd be out of place to say that Bach's music is like a bridge between our world, and the world of those passed?

  • I listen to this every morning when I arrive at the office.

  • @beethov3n what do you mean you listen to this, you mean this song in particular? :D

  • @poopingeneral yes, this one :-)

  • Which transcription is he playing and where do I get this one?

  • @jrcd123 Marcel Dupré.

  • @jrcd123 It's Marcel Dupré.

  • To all posting metronome markings: keep in mind that these are all editorial. The original score by Bach contained no metronome marking. So, really, within the guideline of "Presto" (which in Bach's day was slower than the Presto we see in more recent music), there can be a variety of tempi.

  • The organ is the only good thing about that place.. lol

  • That was an amazing performance.

  • This is the same Tasteless registration. Like diana bish´s dressing ...same noising shit.

  • Who did the arrangement that he is playing. I have one by Wolff but I like this one better. thanks john Someone please respond.

  • Gotta love mr Johanns Sebastian Bach

  • Wow. To be in command of such an instrument....

  • Wow.

  • My edition(Marcel Dupré) says quarter note=92

Diane is a good organist but she's always playing to fast(much american organist)

Version of Paul Jacobs and Rob Stefanussen on you tube is better.

Perhaps listen to and learn from european masterorganists?

  • Outstanding!!!

  • the bish performance, while great, is on the "always sounding very harsh" rufatti @ coral ridge (it's a great organ for worship)...the hazel right has much more depth, even in its FLASH!...it knows when to be harsh & mellow 'them thare trumpets (southern talk)..."

both performances are great & i love listening to both musicians!

  • PEACE OUT PAUL THE BEST

  • Wow! Considering he is playing this from memory, this is a great performance. Personally, I prefere Diane Bish's interpretation, but this one is still really good.

  • I'm with MelloCash. And it seems like the "Switched on Bach" version is closer to 180 bpm.

  • Thank you Mr Jacobs and Mr Bach! Just thank you!

  • 'tis awesome!

  • I used to attend this cathedral when I was in southern California. Sitting in the cathedral and hearing this organ live was amazing!

  • @LivingMindfully1975 I too had the same experience, BUT, sadly it will not happen anymore. The cathedral has fallen on hard times, and has now had to share the services with Latino worshippers who are more contemporary incline, and the PIPE ORGAN is not their cup of tea. You w ill hear guitars, and see keyboardist now, and this GREAT ORGAN is religated to the back bench and played very softly if at all. Tragic! I wish someone would purchase the ORGAN and move it.

  • awesome!!

  • i love the way his fingers seem to dance across the keyboard.

  • Now thats THATS the way you play the organ at the Crystal Cathedral.I've seen ths vid along with interview and it still wow's me at the end with all the reeds sounding off. Thanks for sharing this vid.

  • A majestic peice played on a majestic organ

  • The version from Diane Bish is also great. It also helps that she played it from a church that still preaches the full reformed gospel.

  • Wow, he even added in a few custom fixes here and there :D

  • OK, Flawless Performance by a modern Master; just think about the mind of the Composer? To take paper and a pencil or a quill, and create such a Master Work!?

  • and I have trouble walking and chewing gum together :-)

  • Absolutely spectacular!

  • THE BEST I HAVE HEARD,,,, ROCK ON PAUL

  • He's memorized ALL of Bach's organ pieces!

  • This organ sounds amazing. What better to play on it than Bach? This is my favorite version of this so far.

  • I personally don't like the use of so many stops - it sounds distorted (correction, it it IS distorted), and the bass pipes are slow to reach their full note, messing up the pace in places - listen again - I think less would be more beneficial for this Sinfonia.

  • I once played Wachet Auf on an organ whose pedal notes took a whole beat after you'd moved on to sound - these are certainly not slow!

  • Now, that is what you would call the MIGHTY PIPE ORGAN!!

  • Comment removed

  • this guy is either obsessed with organs or is a very talented man, most likely a little bit of both

  • he is one of the greatest organist of all time he is great but its better to hear and see him in person he is a very nice guy and a very great organist probaly a desendent of bach

  • Agreed, I met Paul in Ripon (England) a few years ago. I regret not having time to look him up on a recent trip to NYC..

    Bravo Paul!

  • It's like when he plays, the organ is singing, and you can hear when it takes a breath. Amazing!

  • played at lovely tempo. Often when this is played to fast, the pipes don't have enough time to sing audibly.

  • It sounds like this piece is written in 3/4 time? Or maybe a slow 6/8. Does anyone happen to know?

  • The score I have is marked 3/4 time annotated "Presto" with the quarter note at 100.

  • @altpapapi I have one where the metronome marking shows q=112, which sounds a bit better to me.

  • @trombonewesman mine says 3/4 with 100= quarter note... oh and presto

  • I bet they let him have some presets even though he does pull a few of his drawknobs on the fly. None of this "do not touch my presets" for him. HA!

  • There is a site on the web where you can hear many of the pipe organs in the world. It's called Organlive. I have found many instruments which are marvelous in there sound. I've actually found the Schlicker / Dobson IV/101 of Valparaiso University to have the most extraordinarily beautiful sound. I wish there were more recordings of it.

  • This is the only organ in the United States that I think is equal to the Notre Dame Cavaille-Coll as it was durign Cochereau's tenure there.

  • beautiful but I prefer Diana Bish's version

  • Yes, Miss Bish's performance, on another Ruffatti organ at Coral Ridge Presbyterian is also one of my favorites. Miss Bish presents an extraordinary live concert, if you ever have an opportunity.

  • @MelloCash I disagree. Bish is wonderful but her version of this piece doesn't have the "flow" of Jacobs and she has vastly under-registered the pedal section.

  • @altpapapi I'd like to hear Paul Jacobs play this piece on the organ at Juliard, the Joy of Music with Ms. Bish is done with many tapings and retakes, it is a TV program, this clip is with little practice on this organ, maybe, I'm just suggesting.

  • @bluecollarboiler Not the Paul Hall organ... that thing's pretty awful. I'd imagine Paul's pretty comfortable with some of the better organs in NYC, though. I've heard him give multiple recitals on the Mander at St. Ignatius Loyola, the Aeolian-Skinner at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin (aka Smoky Mary's), and the Klais at St. Peter's Lutheran, all of which are excellent instruments.

  • @MelloCash are you kidding /

This is the same Tasteless registration. Like diana bish´s dressing ...same noising shit.

  • @MelloCash Yes, I agree with you! I don;t know, but it just seems like Diane's version has more jump and it seems to be lighter, if you know what I mean!

  • @MelloCash I actually much rather listen to this version. I can actually hear some connection of notes and hear what the the full range of notes. compared to the not as good recording and fast playing. I think that Miss Bish is very good but only at certain songs, not this one.

  • @helloitsmelol097 I agree. The registrations used here are so much more colorful and befitting. Bish's version is a bit to reedy and pungent for my taste.

  • @dw154515 If you haven't heard of the hymn Abide with Me. You really should hear it. Look up Abide with Me but go to the Miller Losh opus 5550 it is the largest organ in the world at least in number of pipes, size, and loudest. Headphones don't really do the organ justice though.

  • @MelloCash Agreed. In a movement skillfully crafted to make the pipes so exuberantly shout out the praise and thanksgiving due our God, Jacobs' hesitations and quiet portions are not appropriate. I much prefer Diane Bish's version.

  • @MelloCash She Is Good But Paul Jacob Really knows How To Feel The Music. Diane Bish Is Good But She Plays It Way To Fast.

  • @MelloCash Diane is a good Organist, but she uses the Tutti to often.

In this Video the rangs were choosen better.

    I think so...........

  • This is realy... great!!!!

  • same here

  • this is very soothing and joyous music

  • This kind of playing causes my soul to rejoice and praise the Lord!
