What 50s music variety show was this from? And also I can't tell cause I looked at some of their photos but are those three singers with the lead singer also members of The Rays?
Played this song as a 75rpm record in the early 1960's as a little boy. My older sisters had this variable speed record player that went from 32rpm to 75rpm. Wow time is really forward to 2011 from 1962...i bet these four gents are elderly or not with us. I miss those days compared to condescending/disgusting rap chatter and most hip hop they play today; which glorifies gang violence, sexual perversion, condescending/vulgar language.
THESE ARE NOT "the Rays". Only the most right guy, Harold Miller is. The other 3 were stand in's because Miller and the rest of the "rays" were in a car accident. Miller continued to perform after the crash, the others went to hospital without too serious injuries.
I keep coing back for another look at this fabulous group. I bought the reccord when it came out here in 1957 and have such fond memories of it but I only found out about ten years ago that they had made quite a few other recordings including a real classic called Elevator Operator. I now have a total of 27 of their recordings. Long live the Rays.
Music was great then OK, I especially like those streetcorner guys. But today there is still a lot of good music too. Just look further than the (s)hitparades and what is shown on MTV or whatever
my name is Tanya A.jones the granddaughter of David p. Jones the thick one. Grandpa i miss you. I know and the rest of the family know even though you dont get the respect you deserve but we know Silhouettes is your song you wrote it. and we will always sing this song for you . R.I.P. WE MISS YOU
The Rays were so important to Cameo Records. This huge hit helped pave the way for all the future big stars on Cameo and Parkway. The Rays singing and harmony was outstanding and this classic song, 54 years later is still a great song.
@29tcal According to Wikipedia, the music was written by Bob Crewe and the lyrics by Frank Slay. The song was released on the XYZ and Cameo record labels and reached #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1957. ♫ ♪ ♫
@29tcal This was our favorite song to sing in school. (in the early 1970's), I'm sorry that your Grandpa has passed. He made millions of people happy with HIS Song, And I wish I could have told him Thank You, But Thank You Ms. Jones for sharing your Loving Thoughts, Much RESPECT, and Thank You, <3
I am fortunate enough to know the lead singer on this particular song, Mr. Ford ... I have the pleasure of working with him daily at my job in a NY residence for the elderly.
@CeeCeeVS wow - I would love to know more about him as I have been a fan since 1957 and have 27 tracks in all by the Rays. Only managed to find out his name about ten years ago.
@CeeCeeVS I am so envious of your story. Maybe he will write a book someday, that I would love to see. I remember turning Silhouettes over and playing Daddy Cool and that was it for me - The Rays could do no wrong, years later I discovered -Elevator Operator - them. It was for me like discovering a new planet, only better. Please say hello from me if you get the chance.
@CeeCeeVS Wow, please tell him how much joy The Rays music always gave me (and my older sister, who's still a vibrant R&R fan in her late 60s.
Silhouettes is great.....but "Daddy Cool?" ....even greater!! Tell Mr. Ford that there are those of us like me who are so glad that "Daddy Cool" and "Silhouettes" are still available and can be enjoyed.

@theeuropean I like Hermit's version but I think this was meant to be a good old plodder in the Doo Wop style. Have to say I much prefer The Rays. A song for the Searchers in their live act.
@pagliaccinodlemantra There's good things and bad things about every era. The music in this one happened to be considerably better than most of the stuff you hear nowadays. *cough* iTunes top 100 *cough*
@maggy142 ya, on this era the good thing is WE HAVE AN AFRO-AMERICAN PRESIDENT WHO PUT ENDS THE IRAQ WAR! AND SOME HOLY DUDE THROWS JUSTIN BIEBER A BOTTLE!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!..........the bad things we know it.....BUT THE HOLY BOTTLE!!!!!
Love this song. I find this vid to be funny though. The one shorter singer near the lead singer looks pretty gay. He has a funny look in his face as he give the lead singer the eye. But it was good though, I gave it a 10+ rating.
