  • R.I.P. Woody.

  • Woody was way ahead of the curve on civil rights. He was the first Big Ten coach to hire a black assistant, and the first to start a black kid at quarterback.

  • Ohio State 37 scUM 7. Somewhere, Woody is smiling.

  • Those of us who had the good fortune to know Woody, loved him- warts and all.

  • One of my proudest possessions is a personally inscribed copy of "You Win With People"

  • Woody's father was a teacher for many years, despite only having a 6th grade education. For twenty years, he took every summer class and evening class he could, until he finally earned a bachelor's degree at the age of 37. He spend the rest of his life as superintendent of schools at New Philadelphia, Ohio. Woody learned at a very early age that there is nothing more important than getting an education.

  • Woody died in his sleep, in his own bed. The next day, he was scheduled to give a talk to a group of 5th graders. When Archie Griffin heard about that, he filled in for his old friend.

  • Less than a mile south of Woody's grave site is the Woody Hayes practice facility. It is one of the best in the world- and it did not cost the Ohio taxpayers a cent. All private contributions. Woody had a lot of friends.

  • Woody's record speaks for itself: 2 Heisman trophy winners, 3 Heisman trophies, 13 Big Ten titles, 4 Rose Bowl victories and an Orange Bowl. 78 of his players made it to the NFL.

  • Woody enlisted in the US Navy 6 months before Pearl Harbor.4 years later,he was a Lieutenant Commander, and the Commanding Officer of the destroyer escort USS Rinehart.

  • Some people will actually stoop to trolling on a man's gravesite. The last time I saw Woody, he was smiling.

  • Woody and Anne are buried in Union Cemetary just about a mile from Ohio Stadium. Even though he's been gone for 24 years now, his headstone always looks like an Ohio State gift shop.

  • Those of us who knew Woody, loved him, warts and all.

  • Ohio State 37 scUM 7.

Seven straight against That School Up North. Somewhere Woody is smiling.

  • Richard Nixon was one of the speakers at Woody's funeral. He said, 'The first time I met Woody, I wanted to talk football, and Woody wanted to talk foreign policy. You know, Woody- we talked foreign policy"

When Gerald Ford came to Columbus to give the Commencement address at Ohio State, the President shook hands with Woody and commented that the Columbus Dispatch would probably put the picture on the front page with the caption "Woody Hayes and Friend" (That's exactly what the Dispatch did)

  • Woody had the good fortunate to die in his sleep, in his own bed. That day, he was scheduled to give a talk to a groupof 5th graders. Since Woody couldn't make it, Archie Griffin filled in for him.

  • When Woody was in his mid60s, he went in for gall bladder surgery, and the doctors messed upand left a sponge inside him- so they had to break the news to him that they were going to have to operate on him a second time. Woody just said "That's strange. In 28 years as a football coach, *I* never made a mistake" and that was the last he ever spoke of it.

  • Woody was the first coach in the Big Ten to hire a black assistant coach, and the first to start a black quarterback. When I was an undergraduate at Ohio State my advisor was a black gentleman named Ray Hamilton, who had played for Woody way back in 1951. Ray told me that Woody was a great coach and a really decent guy.

  • After Woody died, his widow and son Steven went through his effects- and found a pile of uncashed checks. Woody did more charity work than any man I ever met.

  • In 1978, Woody's last season, he was paid $43,000- the same as an Ohio State professor. His rival at USC, John McKay was making $400,000 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offered him $2million a year to coach in the NFL.

Woody was not for sale. He loved Ohio State and his players, and those of us who had the good fortune to know him, will NEVER forget him.

  • Woody enlisted in the US Navy 6 months before Pearl Harbor. 4 years later, he was a Lieutenant Commander, and the Commanding Officer of the destroyer escort USS Rinehart.

  • Woody certainly had his faults, but those of us who had the good fortune to know him, loved him- warts and all.

  • Ohio State 37 Michigan 7.

Seven straight for the Buckeyes against that schoolup North.

    Somewhere Woody is smiling.

  • And yet, Woody has cast his ultimate revenge upon Clemson's football program.

WHERE THE FUCK ARE THEY NOW?

Go Bucks! Years after he and Anne passed, they still smile upon The Horseshoe and the Men of The Scarlet and Gray!

  • i'd have beat his old ass if i would have been the clemson player

  • i'm no ohio state fan but a michigan fan and i respect woody hayes and admire him for his coaching ability.

  • Too bad internet trolls cannot make the same historical impact that this coach had on college football...

  • RIGHT WHERE YOU BELONG !

  • @42922thomas Cunt

  • Spoke at my commencement....still get chills. RIP Mr. Hayes. Thanks for the memories and all the things you did for our community and university. A fan for life. I'm at Cal now getting my graduate degree. I hope you don't mind too much.

  • A few days ago, I visited Woody' and Ann's grave. As always, it looked like an Ohio State giftshop: an American flag, an OSU banner, a little scarlet and gray teddy bear, and a buckeye on top of the headstone. And somebody had placed pennies atop the headstone spelling out "O-H-I-O" 22 years after his death, Woody still has friends who miss him. And I am one of them

    Rest in Peace, Woody.

  • Where is he buried?

  • At Union Cemetary, plot 12, on Olengtangy River Road, north of Ackerman and south of North Broadway.

I drove by a few days ago. His and Ann's headstone always has some buckeyes on top of it. :)

  • Uneducated? Just so you know, I'm 19, and I make an average of 50,000 dollars a month, Got my early degree in medicine at 17 from THE Ohio State University, if this is uneducated, then I proudly call myself a retard.

Woody was a man of pure class off the field, a competitor at heart, do you want to know who isn't showing any class right now? You my friend. To claim someone as to having to class, you must have some yourself, be less of a hypocrite, then speak your mind, untill then, quiet.

  • @MTSTAF724 its funny how all of the coaches have TWO national championships under their belt

  • LOL you fucking moron, "Columbus is a HICK town filled with rednecks"

Please retard, the next time you see a redneck in Columbus, feel free to point them out, good luck.

And Woody Hayes revolutionized the college football world, by applying ass Kickings to everyone, including the Clemson player.

  • Go fuck yourself.

  • that maybe so but you still have no right to be talking about the dead like that let him rest in peace

  • wtf is wrong with u im getting tired of having to reply to dumb motherfuckers like u who wanna post the stupidest shit on here wtf is ur problem he was a great coach let him rest in peace u piece of shit

  • I drove by Woody's grave a few days ago. There were two American flags in front of the headstone, and somebody put about half a dozen buckeyes on top of it. Nice touch- Woody and Ann both would have liked that.

  • Michigan soil is run by a bunch of shankoponimises, there a bunch of big dumby's, Woody was buried in Columbus, the greatest city in America...GO BUCKEYES!!!!

Woody passed his coaching smarts down to Tressell

  • joepy37

    * learn to spell

    * research definition of "loser"

  • Ohio State 42 Michigan 7

    Somewhere Woody is smiling

  • About a quarter mile south of Union Cemetary, where Woody and Anne are buried, is the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. It is a state of the art facility- and it did not cost the Ohio taxpayers one cent- Woody's friends and fans paid for it as a monument to him. They also endowed a Chair in History and National Security Policy Studies in his name.

Rest easy, Woody. The new guy is here.

  • Where was he laid to rest?

  • This past Feb 14th would have been Woody's 95th birthday. I went up to Union Cemetary to visit his gravesite. It looked like an OSU gift shop. Woody has been gone for 21 years now, but his friends still love him, and miss him.

  • is that the cemetary right off campus? by the kroger and applebees and stuff?

  • On the west back of the Olentangy, just across from the Horseshoe, go north for less than a mile, and Woody and Ann's plot is on the left. If you get to West NorthBroadway, you've gone to far.
