You know, the punch-card invention is nifty and all, but you could have just hooked up a string of repeaters from the detector rail to the powered rail.
I adapted your timer idea by putting two of those piston punchcard players in series to create a 30 minute timer. It's for running my spider spawner for a set time so i don't lag my server if i go afk too long. It works nicely, although it can't be reset. I think if i used a series of RS Nor latches as memory units I could create a resetable timer, something to play with.
mmillss, if you want to get strongholds and abandoned mineshaft's your going to have to put a new portal in the nether to get to a completely new part of the world
I think your problem is that your loop brings you further than 40 blocks away from the mob collection point, meaning that the mobs despawn. The easiest way to fix this while still using the loop would probably be to install the loop let's say 10 blocks below the spawners. I don't know the coordinates, but that'd maybe be close enough to the collection point to keep the mobs from despawning.
Odd idea for the spider spawner not damaging them possibly due to water and them last minute swimming in it. Have them fall onto bare or fence, detect it....somehow, then pulse water out to push them along. It would probably not work too great, but it may give a more reliable result. Granted I might just be spouting nonsense at the moment, I am rather sleep deprived at the moment =^ ^;=
The red stone engine problem I those has to do with an internal Minecraft glitch. It has to do with the way the game goes through and updates redstone. Sethbling made a more in depth explanation about it. (hashmaps
@ecafocat That's what I was originally thinking. I was planning on going to the surface to recreate the phenomenon. But then I had that middle engine simply stop working, and I got very confused.
A BUD switch is a Block Update Detector. Etho has several videos specifically about doing clever things with them. I believe the block update routine is triggered by an adjacent block being updated. This is often triggered by the player placing another block
@Greymerk Thanks for that! I always worry about building things that take advantage of (real or apparent) gliches. It was a sad day when all old-school water ladders died. :( Perhaps BUD switches will follow someday?
@mmillss BUD switches have been around for a while. To not take advantage of glitches in minecraft would be very limiting, considering how often they're indistinguishable from features. signs blocking water being the prime example.
the thing is i have no idea how my skeletons got out, because my trap design is way different than yours, i dug out the floor of the spawner and encased the spawner then i wash the skeltons down to a trench where another stream of water washes them down even further, until they finally come down to the collection area where i crush them with pistons and use healing potions on them. the lighting around the area is fine too, my death was a mystery.
the exact same thing happened to me. i was idling and watching youtube with my minecraft sound off, when i came back i was on the respawn window and a bunch of skeletons were standing around. i have no idea how the hell they got out. lost all my diamonds armor and a efficiency 4 and unbreaking 3 pick and about a stack of iron and
@mmillss I've been toying with the idea of writing a world generator mod that would create whole 404 worlds with special features that give limited access to certain resources... basically like 404. I think Vechs super hostile maps has sort of replaced 404 in terms of function.

Set the track between the spawner and collection zone, so pretty much 15 blocks down that way the mobs will despawn less often.

The engine glitch may have to do with being at the edge of a chunk. That can often change the way redstone and many other things work.

@mmillss nope, the first bud switch (built by etho) doesn't use any bugs
