God bless him, and God rest his soul! I remember him best for his Western themes, most notably 'Blazing Saddles'. Inspiring to see someone that age still performing.
I saw Frankie in Cleethorpes at Bunnys Club in 1976, and made a big mistake. The first act were comedians and it all went dark and then this chubby old man came on, and I thought it was part of their act, I burst out laughing until he burst into Jealousy. I just wanted the floor to swallow me up. I had only seen pics of him on albums, & obviously they were him as a young man. I didn't realise the bearded man in front of me was the king himself, a fantastic show, & been a fan ever since
I started to tear up because I knew this would be the last time Iwould hear Frankie Laine live. He is my favorite all time singer. Thanks for all these great posts.
I'm a jazz, blues, rock, Afro-Cuban jazz, Beatles fan, but I also grew up listening to Frankie Lane in the 60s. He had a voice that could cut through steel - very distinctive. Listen to THE NAVAJO TRAIL and The Hangin' tree on Youtube
i've always loved frankie laine and i came across this clip by accident ten minutes ago. ''he's 92 and singing a song? please don't embarrass yourself frankie'' i thought just before i watched this. after ten seconds i said out loud ''WOW''. this is probably the finest piece of musical history in the world of music. this is fantastic, brilliant, terrific, stupendous. i felt like crying half way through with the sheer beauty of a star performer. thank you franke, thank you mrironsides.
This is "OLD SMOKIE" and on my birthday April 16th i listed to this song once again by my dear freind Frankie Laine who's been at rest now for a few year's. I sure miss the old day's & the gig's i did all over the world, most of my freinds are gone now and doing there thing in heaven and someday soon i'll be with them again. Enjoy music of all kind because it's a beautiful part of life if only you just listen, ----- surely can brighten your day. Have a Bless-it & Peaceful day ya-all.
Here it is 2011 and if i make it until April 16 i'll be 97 years old, and even tho my freind Frankie has been at rest since 2007 --i miss him more everyday. I have spent many of good times with him & had gig's in the same towns threw the years. I thank you " Mrironsides " for you posting my dear freind Frankie Laine and i'm sure he would of enjoyed all the nice comments which are posted. He loved his fans and would make time to talk to them & i remember how happy he was to be back singing at 92.
@TheSmokie44 The passing of Frankie Laine is our loss and heavens gain. Wonderful singer and entertainer. I felt that at 92 he never sounded better. Frankie you are missed!
May i say, this is a wonderful tribute to a wonderful man. Having trawled you tube, watching so many videos, you should be the proudest person on here for this marvelous video, god bless frankie lane and god bless you.
Frankie Laine I was brought up listening to his music. He was my fathers hero. A few years ago I e mailed Frankie asking if he would wish my father a happy birthday. I didn't expect a reply but the next day he answered and asked for my fathers address and kindly sent him a load of signed pictures and other items. Frankie, you were a gentleman who cared about your fans God Bless
To see a 92 year old man being walked to the microphone brought tears to my eyes. What a tone to his voice and you could see his love of performing by the twinkle in his eyes and his body movements. I am in my 60's and wonder what has happened to our music today. No vulgarity in the music of the early years and modest dress. Take me back now!

I am glad he got to perform again before he died. He seemed to enjoy it and I know many of his fans enjoyed it as well. Unfortunately, Frankie Laine died on February 6, 2007.
@Mrironsides Voice not as powerful as in the old days, but still well tuned... 92 years,,, Great Scott!!! He has been one of the truly good onscreen singers of his century. Gheorghij
He look's old, but not 92, WOW and he's still got it. I'm impressed to say the least. Thanks for posting this i really enjoyed it alot. R.I.P Frankie, you may be gone but will NEVER EVER be forgotten. God Bless You
I just saw a clip of him singing Come Back to Me from the late sixties or early seventies and it was HORRIBLE! It must have been an off day, because to be THIS good at 92 he really must have been OVER THE MOON INCREDIBLE when he was younger.
From a geezer who was there, you're correct. Elvis, The Beatles, and Ray Charles are said to have transformed popular music (before Micheal Jackson), but they all stood on the shoulders of two giants: Johnny Ray and Frankie Laine.
I was lucky enough as a child to have a grandmother (still with us) who introduced me to the likes of Frankie Laine, the Ink Spots, The Platters...Seeing this performance fills me with joy...to know that he had that twinkle up until the very end...and wherever you are Mr. Laine - I'm forever a fan.
1947 before T.V. Frankie has recorded "Thats My Desire" would you believe he was brought to Jax,Fl to appear at a Black Theatre, such a snaufu obviously he didnt appear. Mercury records in those days was mostly "race"records. He made the rounds of the record stores. He had on a pinstripped blue suit, blue suede shoes and he had a massive physique, I think I just stared. After he signed with Columbia what a career he had !!!
I am just 16 years old and when I heard him sing just a few weeks ago (high noon) I was simply amazed. He is amazing. and the fact he is 92 in this and rocking the mic with his soothing voice.
Man I wish i grew up in an era of Frankie Laine and Senatra.
To see this great man, get old broke my heart! When I was 14 he came out with this hit. I was a fan for life! Saw him once in concert in my home town Buffalo. It was the thrill of a lifetime! I will always miss him. The world just doesn't seem the same with out him in it.
Thanks for making me reencounter Frankie, I live in Italy and here these great artist have been forgotten, I think nobody knows that he still performed at 92. A phenomenon!
Boy he still sounded great!! When I was a kid my mother told me a story about how her older brother, when he was a teenager, used to hang out with another kid named Frank LoVecchio in upstate PA. Mr. LoVecchio later went on to become Frankie Laine.
i first saw frankie in convert at the chicago theater in 1952 but the first song i ever heard was lucky old sun in 1949 i think., and was a fan until the day he died , no i shouldnt say that i will be a fan until the day i die.i have seen him perform in many cities across the country and treasure every one.he had the greatest voice of all as proven by the huge variety of songs he sang over the years.
Great great great Frankie Laine. One of my favorite singers. I saw him on stage when he was about 75, and he was 100% as great as he ever was. He is still filling my life with joy.
This Frank the year prior to his passing. I used to telephone him quite regularly, and he was very responsive. I saw him several times in concert, but never actually met him in the flesh.i wrote many letters and always got a reply. When Laura went to the States in 1995, she rang the number i gave her and he invited her uo to his house. Iam lucky to have some very good video footage of that visit ,which has him speaking to me on the 'phone.Knowing the great man was a privalidge. God bless Frank-Yo
I saw this public service broadcast in Florida just before Frankie died.. It is a great thrill and pleasure to be able to see and hear this again. Also on this show were the likes of The Platters, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney and many others. People are encouraged to buy DVD.s and CD recordings of the show to raise money for Public Service Broadcasting. Thanks a million for posting this piece of pop history. Bought tears to me eyes (again)
Wikipedia lists Mr. Laine's appearance singing this, his "hit" song, "My Desire" in 2005 as one of (if not) his last public singing engagements. How lucky for us who didn't catch the (original) broadcast, to have people like Mr Ironsides record (?) and post this monumental moment in time. Thanks to Mr. Laine for coming out of retirement, and again to Mr. Ironsides for sharing. I am truly honored to see this historic piece of music history.
I first heard Frankie Laine in 1978 and have loved him since... but this video is remarkable and I am now in complete admiration of this man! What character.
frankie lived near my friend near cabrini green sedgewick and schiller great neighber and a wonderfull humanatarian if ever theri was a non racisit man it was him he loved all folks.
Thank you for this great posting. You`re spot on tlharris -- the morons who have the audacidity to call themselves `singers` can`t hold a note, there success to due to technology! I saw Frankie at the London Palladium in 1958. At the end of his set he asked for any requests. `Champion the wonder horse` , he laughed and sang it -- a GENTLEMAN.
Absolutely amazing.....this is exactly what I am talking about. So many artist today complain they can't do a show because of a cold, or they don't have this or they don't have that. Here is Frankie Lane at age 92 giving his all one more time for his fans and he looked happy to be there. The youngsters have to learn what is all about and they can start by watching Frankie Lane
Frank played the London(U.K.) Palladium for two weeks and the tickets were impossible to get but I was one of the lucky ones. During the day He taped his TV show in a suburban theatre and anyone could go along for free to make up the audience. I bought every record he sold in the U.K. and idolised him . I stumbled across this video by accident ,thank you for making my week.
The pruning knife of time cuts us all down eventually. If you want to see and hear Frankie at his best check out the "early video" version of Jezebel posted by Markalson. It was filmed over fifty years before his swan song here.
Never mind the voice, what a physique for 92! You can see how he was once a bouncer! One of the things I love about him was the hard life he had before making it, once sleeping rough in Central Park. Many of today's so-called singers should maybe try it: seems to improve the voice and the longevity, lol. Its said his dad was once Al Capone's barber. I wonder if that was him depicted in the opening scene of de Palma's Untouchables with the look of horror when he accidentally cuts his boss?
Will I be watching PBS in 40 years and watch someone who I listened to in my teens like Elvis Costello sing Watching The Detectives when I'm 85 years old? That would be surreal.
What a privilege you had. I really envy you on that. I started to listen to him because my mom did. And my son grow up by his music. His CD was the only thing I've ever bought via internet and this CD was on my CD player day and night :)
One of my many regrets,I could'nt afford to see him when he toured England in the 50s.I did stay up late to hear him sing his fantastic I Believe when it topped the charts week after week on Radio Luxembourgs Top 20.
Unfortunately it was always the last song to be played so I had a very late night every Sunday for weeks.
His voice at 92 had more power than some of todays wimpish efforts. You wouldn't believe he was 92 if you were just listening, would you .I have followed Frankie 's singing for over 55 years and really enjoy it, all the best, Ernie
I was president of one of Frankie's fan clubs, in Philadelphia. He was the greatest, sweetest person who always gave time to his fans. One time I wrote to him and asked about a recording of his late arranger Carl Fisher. By return mail he had taped the recording and mailed it to me, it was called Indian Suite. I will never forget him for doing that. May he rest in peace.
Recently saw a program of Frankie Laine's life and viewed it with my wife a few days ago. It was great. I really liked him as a kid. Then came Elvis and I kinda forgot about Frankie until this program. And this performance on PBS just brings tears every time I look at it. Miss him and wish I could go back in time to see him in concert or on stage. What a loss, such a great performer. Don't think I will ever forget him again. Hope he'll be there when I get there, if I get there. Mike Green
Frankie Laine became my friend in 1976 when I hade the privilege of covering his UK tour as a photographer. From that year we were permanently in touch by letter and cards. He was a great entertainer, but more than anything, recoginsed that his fans had "made" him and always had time for them. He was a lovely person and many lovely times I spent with him. I miss him, what a sad loss!
What I would do for a voice like Frankie Laine's! His voice had such tremendous power, depth, and expression. Even in his 90's, he sounded great. What a great performer he was. So many who loved him in his heyday continue to love him, and that's a great testament.
What a voice, I remember my sister telling me about seeing him whe was a young nursing student in the '50's. One of her fellow students said "don't he make you cream in your pants." Sad that they both are gone now. Lucky old Sun, got nothin to do but look after them now.
frankie laine was a classic. looks like all of us remember him fondly and still enjoy listening to him. who can we listen to today? no one even on the horizon....too bad....thanks for posting
Impecable timing, not even one sour note. The dictionary definition of a profesional. Talent is not cheap, Mr. Laine was a very wealthy man..

Unfortunately the great man passed away on February 6, 2007. A great man, a great voice and a true icon of the 20th century.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS, THIS PROVES IT.

:(
RIP old friend.

How very nice to come across this video by chance. Fancy being able to sing like that at 92 years old!

His voice at 92 had more power than some of todays wimpish efforts. You wouldn't believe he was 92 if you were just listening, would you .I have followed Frankie 's singing for over 55 years and really enjoy it, all the best, Ernie

For 92 that is quite a good job of singing.

I don't know how I missed out on this singer when he was alive...
I heard him recently on the radio singing "That Lucky Old Sun", and I almost fell to the floor, it was so stunning!
Thank God for YouTube......and Wikapedia....
the careers and the music of these genius artists will live forever, to be discovered all over again by new generations...

Loved his voice since dare I say, 'Champion the Wonderhorse'.
The good uns always stand the test of time, and he was one of the very best.

What I would do for a voice like Frankie Laine's! His voice had such tremendous power, depth, and expression. Even in his 90's, he sounded great. What a great performer he was. So many who loved him in his heyday continue to love him, and that's a great testament.

It's great seeing Frankie Laine at 92.
But, I am saddened to see him this way.
In his heyday, Frankie Laine could have tore down the heavens and music would have been made !
He was that powerful and magnificent of an artist.
It was been told, he had 14 Gold Albums to his credit. I am not surprised.
He was one of the greatest artists of all time. And we will not see the likes of him again.
Thank you for posting this.
Rest in peace Frankie, you were the best !

What a voice, I remember my sister telling me about seeing him whe was a young nursing student in the '50's. One of her fellow students said "don't he make you cream in your pants." Sad that they both are gone now. Lucky old Sun, got nothin to do but look after them now.
