"you've made loud aggressive noises and the bear is still coming at you..." pull out your firearm, and fire a warning shot into the ground between you and the bear. bear still comes, bear gets shot.
What happens when an actual bear attacks your fake bear-attack model while filming your "Survive A Bear Attack!" video? Is there any possible way you can upload a video about that?
@oilermeat99, Black bears respond to aggression and noises, usually running away. Bears don't walk around the woods looking for a human to eat. They only attack when they are startled or feel threatened. Bear Spray is INCREDIBLY effective, even more so than a gun. IF you hit a bear with spray it only wants its sense of smell back and 999.9 times out of 1000 it will run away FAST. I do go with bigA2tall's method and carry a strong handgun also. Usually a warning shot will scare them away also.
Did you know that 97% of bears are part bear, part pitbull, and part child molester? If you see a black bear, retreat quickly while covering your butthole.
Really effective video. I would agree to start small - try to scare the bear away. But what's with the two different resorts? Should I fight or protect my vitals?
@BababoCopyrights: The two different resorts are associated with the two different species of bear. Black bears are much smaller (about half the size) than grizzlies. They also have claws that are minuscule compared to grizzly claws. Black bears are timid (unless a sow with cubs, or males during mating season - be aware of the season) compared to grizzlies. Your attempts to fight back will often succeed.
Grizzlies will simply have their way with you, so all you can do is protect yourself.
ok, real question here, going into bear country for 3 months this coming summer.. so im thinking of buying a hunting crossbow, just for those worst case scenarios, where the grizzly DOES charge, because i wont trust my life on some pepper (im not going to provide the seasoning for his dinner too ;P). But at what point would you know if its a bluff charge or not, because if i dont get a good shot, the reload times on those things are a bitch lol so its really a last resort sorta deal.
@stonereflex A weapon like that wouldn't really be your best choice. Pepper spray is more effective than firearms(firearms > crossbow), in repelling bears, unless the firearm happens to be the .50 cal baretta. The reason that bear spray works so well is that because a bear is a predatory animal, it has heightened sense of smell(100x that of humans) and sensitive eyes. Therefore pepper spraying it would overwhelm the bears senses and stun/confuse it more effectively than firearms.
If you encounter a manbear do not be afraid. The best teqnique to avoid a manbear attack is to take a wooden club or a tree branch and smash it over is head. if he doesn't drop he will usually go running
FACT: Only 2 hikers have been killed by a black bear in the U.S. in the last 20 years. (Its 8 people total if you count people attacked in their homes or in tents, but some of those were little kids). The vast majority of the time you just fight them off.
This is fucking ridiculous! Carry a GUN. I man, really. A pistol strapped to your side chambered in .45 or .44 mag isn't going to weigh a ton, and the benefits outweigh the potential risks, especially if you expect to encounter a bear and you have to use your hands like a jackass.
I have to assume this is a joke, but if it isn't... Ugh.
@JesusFuckingChrist84: Spoken by someone whom I assume has never dealt with a real bear before. Each decade there are about 4-5 fatal bear attacks in the US, compared to 7,000-8,000 deaths due to accidental gun shot. So, how do you know that the benefits outweigh the risks? And what evidence do you have that shooting at the bear where a little pistol is a safer course of action than anything in this video?
Lol, 4-5 fatal bear attacks. FATAL attacks, you exclude bear attacks in general. Also, you are manipulating my words, I did not say pull your gun out and start firing wildly. And if you WERE attacked by a bear, using your hands as your primary line of defense is a good way to get killed.
If you aren't a moron with a firearm you simply won't discharge the weapon, a reliable pistol will not do this. Also, you fail to realize al all the other potential threats on the trail.
On the Appalachian trail for instance, you have bear, 3 forms of venomous snakes, boar, mountain lion and people that can be of potential harm to you. While 9 murders have occured there and no one really encounters cougar, they ARE there. Especially the boar and snakes, am I supposed to lay dead against a boar or water moccasin? I think not, so please do not lecture me, proper technique and safety used, you aren't going to accidentally discharge your weapon.
Also, once you've used your hands to defend yourself from a bear and provide me of proof of its effectiveness, please by all means send me proof and I'll swallow my words, otherwise please shut the hell up. ^_^
@JesusFuckingChrist84 : I'm a 210 lb former college football linebacker. That wouldn't be fair. Just google "Officials Catch Bear That Woman Fought Off", and you'll see that even a girl can fight a bear off with her bare hands. Look at google and you can find dozens of stories like that one. Or google "76-year-old man in Akita fights off big mother bear", and you can see that even a senior citizen can do it.
One strike to the head and you're finished. Avoiding injuries in general is a reason to carry a firearm, a warning could possibly scare off the animal as well, I'm not risking my limbs foolishly because I love nature, or because I was naive enough to think my bear hands would defend me against an angered bear, especially if cubs are involved.
BTW, 7000-8000 deaths a year for accidental discahrge is a drop in the bucket, the COMMOM flu kills in the U.S annually 20000 people.
@JesusFuckingChrist84: When has a black bear ever killed someone with a single strike to the head? I'm starting to get the feeling that you'd have trouble even pointing out a real black bear.
If 7000-8000 deaths a year is a drop in the bucket, what the heck is TWO deaths in 20 years?
Heh, 2 deaths would also be a drop in the bucket. It is unrealistic to expect in ones lifetime that they would ever accidentally discharge a firearm following standrad safety procedure. Having a gun and not needing it is better than needing one and not having it. And yes, you'd be retarded if you'd believe such a powerful creature wouldn't be able to do away with you, in terms of bears in general of course.
*Ugh*, This has come to ad hominem attacks already, predictable.
@JesusFuckingChrist84: Ad hominem attack? You claimed that the black bear could kill with a single strike to the head. I pointed out that's nonsense, something that has never once happened, and suggested that you probably don't know much about black bears. When they do attack (which is almost never), it takes a fight. They don't any sort of special "death strike to the head" attack.
Heh, so this is mortal combat is the woods all of a sudden? Also, when the hell did I say "Death strike to the head", don't put it in quotes if I didn't say it.
"The author observed a yearling American black bear, while searching for insects, turn over a flat-shaped rock (between 310 and 325 pounds) "backhanded" Bear in question was only 120 lbs. If that amount of force can be generated by a 120 lb bear, yes it COULD kill you wit ha good whap to the head.
Also, you have to understand that shit happens. Honestly, you claim 7000-8000 accidental deaths per year (I want you to site your source, BTW.I have found statistics that contradict yours) from firearm discharge. Well, big F-ing deal. 20000 a year in the U.S die from the common flu. An estimated 6,289,000 auto accidents in the U.S in 1999. Resulting in 3.4 million injuries and 47000 deaths. So chances are, you will die in an auto accident or from the common flu before discharge.
I understand that bears are extremely afraid of snakes so if possible whip your snake out and the bear will run away. Also most bears you find in the forest have that same zipper down their back, so if possible, run up and try to unzip the bear. BUT do not throw rocks, as in this video, bears are extremely agile on their back feet and that is why so many of them can dance in the circus. Which brings me the most important tactic, always 1st ask the bear for a dance, preferably not a FOXtrot
lol i do love everyone on here saying 'this is bullshit' blah blah blah. if it is then why not make your own vid? insted of being the usal internet wannabe expert....
That is why if I was going in bear country I'd bring a gun with me and plenty of ammo! I'll never kill an animal unless I need to eat or if it's threatening my life.
Your gonna get someone killed with this bullshit advice! "Hey bear... I'd like to go home and have a drink.....then get out the bear spray....stand your ground and see if he attacks...then ....die"
um most guns have magazines or if its a revolver it holds six shots. so you can have anywere from six shots to some handgun magazines hold 33 shots. with that many bullets if you have to reload then you shouldnt have a gun. also they have nice lever action rifles in 45-70 like the marlin guide series. you have 7 shots of 45-70 if you cant kill a bear with that dont live in bear country.
@dp665 haha isnt that the truth.. you should be able to hit in in the frist 3 shots.. if not you bear food.. you might not even get a chance to unload 33 shots if the bear is close..
I myself am a hunter I dont pacfically hunt bear, but my cousin does and it took 4 rounds from a 308 caliber rifle and it still charged at him before it finnally collasped from 2 MORE SHOTS to the head. (This was a grizzly of course.)
That's the worst idea I've ever heard. First of all, they'll be charging faster than you can draw, secondly if you don't kill that bear, you're dead, and finally, unless you're carrying seriously illegal ammunition, I doubt your rounds could penetrate to make a kill shot, if your aim is even straight as you piss yourself.
i agree with beavistheB on this one, all you other morons only hear storys of what to do and what not to do. (othere than sonic) Personally I have hand feed over 10 different wild black bears, and have encountered 6 different grizzly bears here in montana. A big boar black bear has bluff charged me over 4 times before leaving me be, and for the grizzlys, I have had most just look at me and continue on there way, but only one decided to further pursue what i was *(continued
By shooting at him several times before he charged, he changed his mind and walked off, obviously you dont take off running, cause right away he sees you as prey. stand your grand and shoot, and i GUARENTTEE that if you land any caliber including a 22 lr on his nose, he will be change his mind in a hurry.
A handgun is only useful if you can get to it in time. When I am out walking deep in the woods, I have never been able shot a deer with a camera , much less a gun.
PS: There are only a couple of places in the lower 48, where you will find a grizzly.
Thewoodscall, carrying a gun is a good idea only if you know how to use it in a stressfull stiuation. Also if you´re just going for a relaxed walk in the countryside you don´t want any extra weight. Bear spray weighs several times less than any gun that would work against a bear and doesn´t require much skill to use. Despite the joke style of the video, the infomation given makes sense. Thanks!
Call me crazy, but they ought to have a "Planet of the Bears" movie. And then "Return to the Planet of the Bears"
The bears would be out hiking and have to figure out what to do in case of a human encounter. They would then capture the human and put him in a cage to take him out to civilization and set him loose there. Or they just may put him in a people zoo and get him to beg for Oreos.
Too Bad Charlton Heston is Dead...he could play this role!
.45 magnum, or a .357, something that will cause alot of flesh damage, aim center mass and only fire when absolutley necessary. but i know a guy who had a bolt action .308, the bear charged, he was so scared he fired one shot into the ground and the bear ran off.
I carry a 40 cal. xd40, do you think that will help in case of an all out attack??? I chose that weapon in case I panic and miss I am carrying 12 in the clip vs 8. think it will do the job??? And what is the best place to aim? I am not a hunter but I thought in the nose. This is worst case scenario of course
i'd never try to aim for the head with how much it moves but it can't make the situation worse if you think you can hit it with how small it is, but i'd go with a .45 handgun with an extended clip just in case, .40 should do the job with the 12 rounds but you gotta pull 12 shots pretty quick and hollow points is what you want, they expand on impact, alot of stopping power, and put a nice big bright sight on it to make up for the shaking that happens. and yeah worst case scenario.
Would'nt guns be like nothing to a bear? Someone told me A bear's skull is so thick You'd need to put a shotgun directly on his head to kill it? handguns are like BB guns pelets
thats the main thought process behind aiming center mass, i don't believe a bear's skull is that think, but their brain is quite small and their heads move alot. center mass will cause alot of hemorageing and hopefully drop it.
yeah. when bear hunting people have one very large caliber rifle, and a friend or two standing behind them with a 500 cal (essentally a 50. for pistols) revolver. if the rifle doesnt drop it and it charges, they go all out with the revolvers as a last resort.
Sounds good in theory, but just like humans, pepper spray doesn't always work. Windy conditions will put it in your own face, and then you'll just be a spicy southwestern meal for the bear. Get a gun! ...You don't worry about bears ever again! ...Or snakes, or bobcats, or coyotes, or boars. If you can't scare a bear away, the chances of you being able to succesfully ground-fight a bear is at best laughable. There is little a human can do against that kind of brute force. Get a gun!
An easier solution for people who cannot obtain an easily carried handgun would be a child's cap gun for the noise and then use bear spray in the large can. Unfortunately our right to own guns has been destroyed in many areas of the U.S I live in Chicago and all of the surrounding counties ban handguns. All State parks do as well . Usually you can only have a gun in areas where hunting is permitted and private land when it comes to camping and backpacking
Your right to survival supercedes all other laws. I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six. Especially when it's only a firearms violation in the wake of self-preservation. Good luck finding a District Attorney or a Jury that will find you guilty. Loud noises and Hot sauce in a can are not guaranteed to stop bears. Firearms are. You're whats for dinner, so it's all up to you.
if you play dead for a grizzly bear it will eat your face in front of whoever your with never play dead. cary a firearm the noise will scare it off more than anything will..and if it attacks than .....well you are armed you win. iv scared off 3 bears with my 44 mag 2 blacks one grizzly never had to kill one but if a bear attacks you ...you are gone done dead
Ouch! None of the criteria mentioned for identifying the bear species is accurate. Black bears are distinguished from brown bears by lack of a prominent shoulder hump; a roman profile or sloping nose and forehead instead of a dished forehead; and shorter, thicker claws for climbing versus longer, more slender claws for digging. Although brown bears are generally bigger, size is not a dependable indicator. Also, fetal position is often recommended as opposed to lying prone as shown.
If you're ever in Scandinavia, do the grizzly bear approach. Whatever you do, don't "stand your ground" and don't fight. If you have a gun, don't shoot.
actually this is not...you should never act aggressive towards a bear in any way, if they dont run away the first time then its time for you to walk away slowly
the grizzly has some nice approach shoes

a gun doesnt work....you may not hit the bear and if you do perhaps not lethal...I would feel safer with a spray.

wildernesssurvival55 2 years ago
If it's a black bear your sopposed to fight back. If it's a grizzly then you play dead.
rgs857 2 years ago
That is why if I was going in bear country I'd bring a gun with me and plenty of ammo! I'll never kill an animal unless I need to eat or if it's threatening my life.

yeah but most national parks do not permit firearms...

instead of beer spray y not just shoot it if you live in bear country buy a gun
dp665 2 years ago
cause you'll miss and wont get another chance to reload.
flyingdonkey2009 2 years ago
um most guns have magazines or if its a revolver it holds six shots. so you can have anywere from six shots to some handgun magazines hold 33 shots. with that many bullets if you have to reload then you shouldnt have a gun. also they have nice lever action rifles in 45-70 like the marlin guide series. you have 7 shots of 45-70 if you cant kill a bear with that dont live in bear country.
dp665 2 years ago
@dp665 haha isnt that the truth.. you should be able to hit in in the frist 3 shots.. if not you bear food.. you might not even get a chance to unload 33 shots if the bear is close..

BeavistheB 2 years ago
I myself am a hunter I dont pacfically hunt bear, but my cousin does and it took 4 rounds from a 308 caliber rifle and it still charged at him before it finnally collasped from 2 MORE SHOTS to the head. (This was a grizzly of course.)
s0nic777 2 years ago 2
A .45? Sure...if you want to just piss it off.
iluvincitingviolence 2 years ago
That's the worst idea I've ever heard. First of all, they'll be charging faster than you can draw, secondly if you don't kill that bear, you're dead, and finally, unless you're carrying seriously illegal ammunition, I doubt your rounds could penetrate to make a kill shot, if your aim is even straight as you piss yourself.
digitalhawkeye 2 years ago
i agree with beavistheB on this one, all you other morons only hear storys of what to do and what not to do. (othere than sonic) Personally I have hand feed over 10 different wild black bears, and have encountered 6 different grizzly bears here in montana. A big boar black bear has bluff charged me over 4 times before leaving me be, and for the grizzlys, I have had most just look at me and continue on there way, but only one decided to further pursue what i was *(continued
shootingthings 2 years ago
By shooting at him several times before he charged, he changed his mind and walked off, obviously you dont take off running, cause right away he sees you as prey. stand your grand and shoot, and i GUARENTTEE that if you land any caliber including a 22 lr on his nose, he will be change his mind in a hurry.

first off, it would be good to learn if there are even grizzly bears/brown bears in your state, there is a very good chance there not.

Thanks!
berlinvalentin 2 years ago
Nice video but seriously, why not carry a better weapon like a gun just in case?
thewoodscall 2 years ago
Call me crazy, but they ought to have a "Planet of the Bears" movie. And then "Return to the Planet of the Bears"
The bears would be out hiking and have to figure out what to do in case of a human encounter. They would then capture the human and put him in a cage to take him out to civilization and set him loose there. Or they just may put him in a people zoo and get him to beg for Oreos.

.45 magnum, or a .357, something that will cause alot of flesh damage, aim center mass and only fire when absolutley necessary. but i know a guy who had a bolt action .308, the bear charged, he was so scared he fired one shot into the ground and the bear ran off.
134paintball431 3 years ago 2
I carry a 40 cal. xd40, do you think that will help in case of an all out attack??? I chose that weapon in case I panic and miss I am carrying 12 in the clip vs 8. think it will do the job??? And what is the best place to aim? I am not a hunter but I thought in the nose. This is worst case scenario of course
RonnieShred 2 years ago
i'd never try to aim for the head with how much it moves but it can't make the situation worse if you think you can hit it with how small it is, but i'd go with a .45 handgun with an extended clip just in case, .40 should do the job with the 12 rounds but you gotta pull 12 shots pretty quick and hollow points is what you want, they expand on impact, alot of stopping power, and put a nice big bright sight on it to make up for the shaking that happens. and yeah worst case scenario.
134paintball431 2 years ago
Would'nt guns be like nothing to a bear? Someone told me A bear's skull is so thick You'd need to put a shotgun directly on his head to kill it? handguns are like BB guns pelets
fhfh2020 2 years ago
thats the main thought process behind aiming center mass, i don't believe a bear's skull is that think, but their brain is quite small and their heads move alot. center mass will cause alot of hemorageing and hopefully drop it.
134paintball431 2 years ago
yeah. when bear hunting people have one very large caliber rifle, and a friend or two standing behind them with a 500 cal (essentally a 50. for pistols) revolver. if the rifle doesnt drop it and it charges, they go all out with the revolvers as a last resort.
ghgf 2 years ago
Sounds good in theory, but just like humans, pepper spray doesn't always work. Windy conditions will put it in your own face, and then you'll just be a spicy southwestern meal for the bear. Get a gun! ...You don't worry about bears ever again! ...Or snakes, or bobcats, or coyotes, or boars. If you can't scare a bear away, the chances of you being able to succesfully ground-fight a bear is at best laughable. There is little a human can do against that kind of brute force. Get a gun!
Bliggida 3 years ago
An easier solution for people who cannot obtain an easily carried handgun would be a child's cap gun for the noise and then use bear spray in the large can. Unfortunately our right to own guns has been destroyed in many areas of the U.S I live in Chicago and all of the surrounding counties ban handguns. All State parks do as well . Usually you can only have a gun in areas where hunting is permitted and private land when it comes to camping and backpacking
bonzaibb12 3 years ago
Your right to survival supercedes all other laws. I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six. Especially when it's only a firearms violation in the wake of self-preservation. Good luck finding a District Attorney or a Jury that will find you guilty. Loud noises and Hot sauce in a can are not guaranteed to stop bears. Firearms are. You're whats for dinner, so it's all up to you.

if you play dead for a grizzly bear it will eat your face in front of whoever your with never play dead. cary a firearm the noise will scare it off more than anything will..and if it attacks than .....well you are armed you win. iv scared off 3 bears with my 44 mag 2 blacks one grizzly never had to kill one but if a bear attacks you ...you are gone done dead
manofmusicx 3 years ago
Also, fetal position is often recommended as opposed to lying prone as shown.
jahlaskamahn 3 years ago
I don't recall the fetal position being recommended any more. Where did you hear this non-sense?
kerethan 3 years ago
If you're ever in Scandinavia, do the grizzly bear approach. Whatever you do, don't "stand your ground" and don't fight. If you have a gun, don't shoot.
duplenty 3 years ago
This is good information. Thanks.
4638JL 3 years ago
actually this is not...you should never act aggressive towards a bear in any way, if they dont run away the first time then its time for you to walk away slowly

OK,thanks for clarifying that for me!
