The Caribbean is very multicultural and diverse and is made up of people of all different races and ethnicities, black white asian mixed indigenous etc, there is multiculturalism and diversity in every country and in every part of the world, alot of people tend to stereotype all people from a certain country or region as all being of the same race colour and ethnicity which is ignorant and it shows how uneducated those people are.

Its not that people are asking you such questions to be malicious or negative. Its that the only publicity that the American public receives about the Caribbean are the very stereotypes that you spoke of. People are unaware of the ethnic diversity in the Caribbean especially Jamaica. Trinidad's population is very diverse with ethnicities such as white, middle eastern,asian, and african.
I grew up in California and speak Jamaican, Hawaiian, and Brazilian. And nuh badda come come 'olelo mai ia'u que Brazilian a nuh language, porque a'ole maopopo voce bout dem ting deh. Mesma coisa com Jamaican.
@karian4 Jamaican is a creole language. Jamaicans mix it with standard English so often that it gets hard to recognize, but it's still there, and sometimes people speak it purely. Hawaiian is a language (ka 'olelo 'oiwi). Brazilians speak Portuguese, but the Brazilian form of Portuguese is pretty different, so if someone says they speak Brazilian, I know what they mean. Officially it's still Portuguese.

But I should point out that the Brazilian form of Portuguese is still considered officially (and by most people) to be Portuguese, and it basically is. I'm just saying that I don't think it's wrong if someone wants to refer to it as "Brazilian" for short, but most people don't. But Jamaican creole is definitely recognized by linguists as a true creole language. It even gets its grammar and syntax from West African languages.

@karian4 Jamaican Creole is just the technical name for what most people call "Patois", but when people talk about patois, it often is not full creole but a mix of creole and standard english. For example, you could say "That's my food" in various ways in Jamaica, ranging from simply English with a J'can accent all the way to the thickest creole: "A fimi bickle dat". But most often, Jamaicans speak somewhere between those two extremes. I lived in Hawaii and Brazil and grew up round J'cans.

What If I did a video to If I moved to shout out different cultures and show how much I loved them. So when its time to shout Jamaica out I put on a rasta cap with fake dreads, paint my skin a very dark brown, roll a fat blunt up, and start shouting respect this, respect that. At my job there is a lady that is white, and from jamaica. at my job a small few white and black americans could not understand . on some level was offended, like she was lying. history aside, i wish people knew that immigration takes place everywhere, and not just america (or jamaica for that matter). also, you can almost ALWAYS count on most countries in the world having white, chinese and indian/desi minorities. it makes sense: the former is the wealthiest group of people (or are the descendants of former colonists), and the latter 2 groups are the largest groups of people in the world).

@karian4 Jamaican is a creole language. Jamaicans mix it with standard English so often that it gets hard to recognize, but it's still there, and sometimes people speak it purely. Hawaiian is a language (ka 'olelo 'oiwi). Brazilians speak Portuguese, but the Brazilian form of Portuguese is pretty different, so if someone says they speak Brazilian, I know what they mean. Officially it's still Portuguese.

But I should point out that the Brazilian form of Portuguese is still considered officially (and by most people) to be Portuguese, and it basically is. I'm just saying that I don't think it's wrong if someone wants to refer to it as "Brazilian" for short, but most people don't. But Jamaican creole is definitely recognized by linguists as a true creole language. It even gets its grammar and syntax from West African languages.

@karian4 Jamaican Creole is just the technical name for what most people call "Patois", but when people talk about patois, it often is not full creole but a mix of creole and standard english. For example, you could say "That's my food" in various ways in Jamaica, ranging from simply English with a J'can accent all the way to the thickest creole: "A fimi bickle dat". But most often, Jamaicans speak somewhere between those two extremes. I lived in Hawaii and Brazil and grew up round J'cans.

I think the bottom line is that we continue to learn from each other and try spread the love. Its also important to teach each other what can offend the next person and why. At my job there is a lady that is white, and from jamaica. at my job a small few white and black americans could not understand . on some level was offended, like she was lying. Blks would talk to them like ur going to take that, and the wp would say racial things to her, when she wouldnt see thier point of veiw, treated her funny. Black jamaicans seen it as well she is one of us. In the states it's we should stick together b/c we have the same skin color instead of we share the same nation.

history aside, i wish people knew that immigration takes place everywhere, and not just america (or jamaica for that matter). also, you can almost ALWAYS count on most countries in the world having white, chinese and indian/desi minorities. it makes sense: the former is the wealthiest group of people (or are the descendants of former colonists), and the latter 2 groups are the largest groups of people in the world).

we dont know the prime minister of uzbekistan because we work more hours per capita than people in any other industrial country, and the money we earn from that work goes to taxes that send foreign aid to 150 countries that all hate us. we dont have as much time to watch the news, but we know obvious stuff like that.

@TheEnviroFriend taking into consideration the wealth, freedom, infrastructure and the level of education the US is able to (or should be able to) provide, Americans are surprisingly ignorant. Also, unlike in most countries, the average American has the opportunity or chance to directly interact with someone from, say, Uzbekistan (or any other country). Hard working? The Japanese are more hard-working. And I will bet my every penny that "most" Americans don't know about white Jamaicans.
