In what way is this a kick yeah he puts his skate out but that like 5 sec before the puck hits his foot and when it does hit his foot he hasnt moved it for several seconds(except for the fact that the foot moves with the body as hes skating). If you take this into account its definitly not a kick and therefore a goal

@Pys3n umm. He lifts his stick off the ground looks right at the puck and pushes his foot out to kick the puck in. It's simply a kick and the refs got lazy because of the score. Poor decision on this. Funny thing is he got nailed for in in LA

Smart......"If an attacking player has the puck deflect into the net, off his skate or body, in any manner, the goal shall be allowed. The player who deflected the puck shall be credited with the goal." It's right in the rule book (and its a pretty well known fact to hockey fans).

@buttkick22 Please, it was a kick. He lifted his stick off the ice turned his skate and pushed it towards the puck to kick the puck in the net. It's a kick and it's funny he tried this same move in the playoffs and got called for it.

@Kartracer6 kicking and directing are 2 different things. Directing is perfectly legal, kicking is not. Cleary he never did a kicking motion on this goal.

@buttkick22 I admit there is a lot of grey area in this rule no doubt. But give me a break anytime you angle your foot to the puck and push forward it's a kick. This is more just laziness by the refs because of the score. It's sad people pay for 60 min and the officials only wanna work for 45 min. But that's the NHL for you. Like I said come playoff time he got called for doing this but he does this move far to much that eventually he will start getting called for it.

@dsrevo79 The ruling is: Any DISTINCT kicking motion used in a goal will be disallowed. I don't see them kicking the puck. Do you? Redirect/banking has been used for the longest time. why not redirect with the foot?

You know, he does strech his leg towards the goal. It looked like a kick to me, but it is very close. I don't think it is fair by the annoncer to say its a no doubter. Really I guess I don't understand what a kicking motion is if this is not one. Either way even if this is not a kicking motion, I don't think it should be legal. The goal is to score the puck with your stick not your foot. Thats what we have soccer for.

@udpcross24 it wasn't distinct cause he was 'trying to stop". i guess when they mean distinct you have to be going out of your way to move the puck with your foot, but here he was using the outside edge of his skate to slow down and turn away from the net, and the puck conveniently bounces off of him.

Ahh, I don't think in anyway he accidently did that, but to me it looks like a clear cut kick, but as I said, if thats not a kicking motion, then what is. Really I don't see how you could possible kick the puck in while moving towards the net then, so then I really don't understand why the refs would review it. In the end I don't think goals like this should be legal. If it is an accident fine, but to do it on purpose, I don't agree.

Some of these Kings' fans knkow nothing about hockey. Even if it wasn't the tying goal it would have taken the game in a diferent direction entirely. if it counted coach AV might have given the sedins a bit more of a rest instead of putting them right back out there to score more goals etc, etc. Endless amounts of possibiltes

We'll see how this all plays out. Just a couple weeks ago Bertuzzi kicks a puck in and it counts, but the league doesn't like these Canucks goals for some reason. The rule book says that it's ok to redirect pucks with the skate so long as there is no DISTINCT kicking motion. Now they are inventing things, like the "gray area"  Kings Alumni Murphy was talking about. F@#$ the NHL and F@#$ the DVD.

According to Darren Pang and the St Louis coach that goal was identical to another goal a Sedin scored on the DVD they sent out to the league saying they would not allow it. Basically saying if a puck comes from behind the goal line and a skate contacts it, it will not count. However if it was already headed towards the net (has a chance to go in from initial shot) and is directed in by a skate it will count.

This call just topped off what was already a blown game by the NHL refs. I really hope to see this reviewed by the board and changes be made. They need to start training NHL refs better this is a disgrace.

Not only does he watch it go to his foot he lifts his stick and then turns his skate to angle into the net and pushes his skate forward...believe me there was clearly a kicking motion. But it's fine the refs messed it up we move on to the next game and not worry about this one. No sense in trying to fix what we can't...good teams win great teams find ways to win even with bad reffing. We'll move on.

well he does angle the skate, before the puck get s to him, and watch it go in, all that is allowed. the only movement of the skate is just to get it in position to tip it, which is before the puck gets to him. i think at the point where the puck does get to him, if he tried to kick it, his leg is so outstretched and he's leaning so much that he would have blown a tire pretty bad, or at least fallen over. it's not a kicking motion, because his skate is in position by the time the puck gets there

so your saying so long as he doesn't draw attention to the kick it's ok to purposely use your skate to push a puck in? Don't you think that's kind of a bad spirit of the rule? The Refs should have waved this off it's to close to a kick in and the had already allowed the score to go 4-1 it's kind of adding insult to injury as it is. These refs did a really bad job the whole game as it was. This is just really poor on their part.

there's no kick, it's a good goal. i dont disagree on the rest of the refs game but this was a good call. he's not drawing attention away, he can't cause there isnt a kick. thats all i'm saying. he doesnt make a kicking motion, the closest thing there is to that is him angling his skate, which is allowed as long as he doesnt kick it

To me it looks like he pushes his skate towards the puck to push it in. To you it doesn't....Can we both agree here that this is causing a gray area in the rule book. I think that if this is the case then any goal scored of an offensive players skate should be waved no goal? I just think it's a poor spirit of the game to intentionally put the puck in off your skate and it count because you didn't "kick it in" you directed it in

it's definitely a gray area. Maybe in this situation, they should look at it with the video review, and decide if a) was the player in a difficult position to make contact with his stick, or b) was the player in a position to deflect/shoot the puck in. because in this case, Daniel is in an akward position to shoot, and while he could tip it, he might not be able to make good contact in that position, which could cost a goal. does that make any sense? I think that might be a good option .

no what I'm thinking he did is tricked Huet into thinking he was going to knock it in short side with his stick but instead used his skate to go opposite side. I don't know with as awful as this game was called anyway I don't think this was the make or break moment of the game it just added to the insult

he still could have knocked back far side with the stick, so long as he was able to make contact. tricking the goalie into thinking you're going to do something is what you want to do against a goalie, or else you wont score. anyway, you gotta see a kicking motion, and there isn't one here. lets just forget it

the rule clearily states, if there is no distinct kicking motion, the goal will stand. there is clearily no distinct kicking motion there. It's a good goal. I do not agree with the ref making any call wether it be in or no goal on plays like these if he sees the puck hit his skate, because that way they can go upstairs and find out one way or the other for sure. refs CANNOT make that split second decision, there is so much going on it is impossible. Refs decisions RARELY get over-turned
