I think the biggest challenge that kpop artists like Rain, Se7en and BoA face in the US is that they're basically doing exactly what American artists are doing. The public reaction to that is basically, "Yeah, you can sing and dance, but so can our artists, so why should we listen to you when we already have them?" Kpop has to distinguish itself if it wants to gain a more mainstream US following.

There's still the idea that it's mandatory, as an music artist, to debut in the US and maintain some type of success to be called an international artist. But of course that's a lie b/c there are plenty of artists of have sold millions and have never stepped foot into the US.

And take from me (an American) there's nothing special about us musically. It's all trash.

Yes, there are some overhyped manufactured pop drivvel out there (*cough*BIEBER*cough*) but America's music scene is far more creative and original than Kpop's, which pretty much just copies American genre's like pop and R&B. America gave the world Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Beyonce, Eminem, Whitney Houston, and so much more.

Her English, has really improved since this interview. This was shot near the end of 08' and between the questions she seemed nervous and didn't talk too much. Sidewalks interviewed her again in 09' and during that shoot she was much more comfortable, joking around in English with everyone. She was cool. and I got to actually converse with her like a human being, instead of the first time when I stood there in awe.

Uhmmn probably you should go to an English speaking country, your listening skills will improve dramatically! 3 weeks is enough, if you try not to be with people from your country there speaking your language and so on..

Its not really a fake accent. When Koreans and Japanese learn English, even in school, they learn it off American tapes. Mixed with their natural accent, it takes time to adapt. I taught English in Japan before, so I know. So give her a break on the accent part. Imagine Americans trying to speak Korean or Japanese. The accent disparity is much much more hilarious.
