Apollo 13 is the best example of modern humanity. Sending a rocket to the moon, failing due to a stupid mistake and bringing astronauts who almost die back to earth, all safe.
James Lovell is my favourite Astronaut. And then, played by my favourite actor Tom Hanks... Thats just a amazing film with a amazing story and with perfect music
I read all your posts and I must ask you a simple question: Do you all really think that space exploration and manned spaceflights are a waste of time and money?. Do you really even thought about economical benefits produced by space race? And one more question: Don't you see that there is a finite quantity of petrolium, water, gold, silicium... and there are vasts quantities in our solar system?
Think, for Christ sake! You are alarmed by global warming? There you have an option.
If the US doesn't pave the way for space exploration, we might as well dismantle NASA now and get it over with. Too many politicians with their collective thumbs up their backsides can't run such a program.
NASA needs more funding, and the social programs that would get NASA money (when NASA does get axed) will still be a drain on our taxpayers.
But bleeding hearts will bleed...
And we will wind up as paying passengers, rather than the pilots and flight crew.
Yeah this was a very good movie. I plan on majoring in Aerospace Engineering and my life dream is to be accepted to go up on a mission to space with NASA.
That movie is certainly up there with "a beautiful mind" & "good will hunting", my 3 favs. As an AE student I can tell you that there will be no human space flight for decades after the last 4 shuttle missions next year.
Obama placed a non-PHD minority patsy in charge of Nasa, that will assist in the dismantling of Nasa. Being that you are young, you should know that you are taught a liberal way in school that was created by law(s).
Inspiration will never again come from that of reality.
I don't know about you, but 6 years doesn't equal decades, to me. The Orion spacecraft will be taking humans into space by 2015. NASA has gone back to conventional rockets, although still using the old boosters from the space shuttle.
Inspiration will happen everywhere, no matter how gloomy your predictions. I'm sorry, Eore, but let us all be happy that NASA is one of the few things untouched by our new president.
Tell that to the guy who predicted it would. I actually just did some more research on it, it's rubbish. NASA is the pride of America, and it is here to stay.
NASA needs to forget human space flight. Than can be done by private enterprise. NASA should focus solely on space telescoping and drone space exploration. That'll more bang for the money. Oh way more bang for the money! There's only so much of it to go around these days. Well except if you are Obama, then you just borrow form the Chinese in ever greater quantities to "fix everything".
Apparently you do not read any of the space news. 2015 was the planned year, but Obama formed "the Augustine commission" and they have said the Orion/Ares program needs to be scrapped and that we couldn't even get back to the moon by 2030 if we tried. They only launched the test rocket in October (which I was there for) because it was already paid for before Obama got in office.
Inspiration comes from what the powers want you to be sidetracked on while they spend your billions (moon/war).
The past NASA administrator earned 7 degrees in (Electrical, Aerospace, Physics, & Business). The current patsy doesn't even hold a PHD in anything.
What part of patsy did you not understand? Your logic is flawed by thinking the stock-boy can manage the store. I'm not a dem or rep, just realistic. When the fate of earth lies on Nasa one day, would you rather tell the world that we have the best of the best running Nasa, or the only minority candidate Obama had to choose from?
I know Bolden personally. He's also a former marine general, and a former Astronaut. I met Bolden in San Diego California June 6th 2004, we talked about his past military career. He's more qualified than Griffen, O'Keefe. Obama was going to pick some lame ole green engineer to make NASA into global warming campain #1, until Senator Nelson (also Nelson flew on Space Shuttle Columbia with Bolden in 1986 before challenger exploded) told him Bolden was the guy for the job.
I had the privilege of meeting General Bolden when I was a young, wide-eyed Boy Scout. His presence and words inspired me to learn more about space exploration and consider a career in aerospace. I came to revere names such as Armstrong, Lovell, Young, and Mattingly. It saddened me greatly to witness his virtual surrender to the defeatism and myopic vision of Obama's administration. A revitalized space exploration program has the capacity to completely transform our society and the world....
If being conservative, as in meaning a desire to conserve the philosophical principles of the founders and classical liberalism created during the enlightenment, equates to being mentally defective, then god help the progressives. O wait I can't say god anymore.

The future of space exploration lies in private corporations, as the costs are too expenisve to be justified by governments

You know, I wish they'd really made that Buran Russian shuttle work... that would be nice... can't imagine a rocket going to the moon now...

@xtremspl Inspiration comes from within. It has the potential to take us to the stars and beyond. Let no man tell you when not to be inspired. ;-)

Obama placed a former astronaut and Shuttle pilot in charge of NASA. How is he not qualified for the job?
Why are so many spaceflight advocates mentally defective conservatives?
