So Hel is getting the same bad press as Hades. Underworld deities are depicted as evil because the Christian Underworld is a evil punishment realm, even though only small parts of other Underworlds are evil punishment places.
ok i need ur help im odinist and my question is were do regular people go wen they die warriors go to vallah and freyas hall but wat aboput odinist doctors or watever they r just regular people that dont die in battle were do they go
@disturbedzack That was the parrt in the video about Hel (not a bad place at all), more local ideas about ancestors going into mountains or inhabiting certain places.
@Vinterulf thanks man u helped me alot iv been trying to figure that out for awhile and my girlfriend wanted to know as well we r both odinist again thanks alot praise odin
Love the idea that Valhall is linked to the mountains of the Ancetors, very interesting.
Thor's afterlife? I think there is no doubt there, if you want more historic evidence there is a runic memorial stone asking Thor to look after the deceased's spirit - good enough for me.
I believe the myths and legend try to describe in human terms as best as something otherworldly can possibily be described in a way we can fathom. i.e. although Thor may best be symbolized and imagined in the human mind with a red beard, it does not mean that I think it is literally a red bearded guy in the sky. Is he a real, live sentient entity? Yes.
Thank you for your videos. When Asatru found me, my heart and mind felt like an ancient house being opened. There is still dust and cobwebs, but this knowledge and wisdom you share fearlessly helps with the cleanup and reconstruction.
There is so much i need to figure out, and so much for me to do. I can't express in words how much your videos have helped me find not only who i am, but who i want to be.
Haugbui are actually a type of undead. Kind of like a zombie. (to REALLY simplify it) They usually dwell in or nearby their mound. Draugr is another type. They are usually not very nice.
Honestly, I really haven't thought hard about it at all. Valholl sounds nice since I'm a martial kind of guy, but then sitting in Hel with my ancestors and family would be just as enjoyable. I figure I'll go where I'm sent. when dead. I am truely more concerned with living life for life's sake rather than living it in anticipation of where I'd like to go. Doing things in life in order to get somewhere in death is the main focus of Judeo-Christian-Musim thought and theology, not ours/mine.
Nothing specific about animals in literary evidence. The only thing I can think of would be that since people did have various domestic animals (dogs, horses, falcons)sacrificed and buried with them in burial mounds, etc. that along with the idea of taking some material goods with you to the afterlife, that the animals did also or they wouldn't have bothered killing them and placing them with the deceased.
I think there's an apprehension towards Gimle from alot of people because they feel it may be Snorri being too influenced by the Christian heaven. I can't say for sure though.
Yes, as Mike pointed out, Gimle doesn't appear anywhere until after the destruction of the worlds, when Baldr comes back etc. Gimle seems to be like a "Heaven" place, which makes many believe it was a Christian addition to the Lore.
Gimle is mentioned as a new place built after things are cleaned up after Ragnarok happened. That's the prophecy anyway. But, the others are correct that many academics (like Simek & Orchard) think that it too was a "christian addition".
Snorri definately was a Christian. I've had the pleasure of meeting with one of his ancestors and lucky enough to have the gentleman guide my friends and I to his grave and get to see Snorri's escavated house! (I even sat in his personal hot-spring tub!)
Snorri was a chrisitan, just very proud of his heritage and wanted to preserve it along with proving that Iceland was just as advanced as the Greeks and Roman societies.
Very interesting videos. I myself am an Atheist, though for a while I studied and read on Asatru, I still own my copy of the Elder Edda and my Mjolnir. But it interests me, and your videos have rekindled the flame so to speak. Please get into contact with me, I feel I can learn much from you.

Although we as Odinists have the right to choose to interpret the myths as we choose, I agree 100% with you.

Thanks for the responce.
PS I think somebody may be vote botting your videos, as they all start of highly rated and suddenly drop to two stars :/
UnyieldingDefiance 2 years ago
Yes, I think you are right. Since usually I get ratings slowly...then all of the sudden there's a whirl of bad ratings in a single day.

Do you believe in Valhalla as a literal place?
UnyieldingDefiance 2 years ago
yes

No, I haven't read it.

If you don't mind me asking, is there an afterlife you would prefer above the others?

Valhalla, with my ancestors.

The male ancestral spirits that you talked about (Alfar) are they what is also known as "Haugbui"?
If not, what is the Haugbui?

What happens to animal spirits ? Is there any information on this ? Im thinking about deceased pets like dogs and cats...

I am just wondering if Snorri was truly Christian or if he was pretending to be one to avoid persecution.
