meldrick had a big build against chavez his shoulders are much broader, massive chest as well. should of gone to another champion than terry norris, theres nothing norris could do wrong, norris wasn't draining too make 154, and because of his small stature in comparison to other light middles and his name most welters thought they could beat him,
taylor-norris at 147 would be very interesting.
meldrick should of gone for rossi, meldrick could of got to him. then a unification...it's a shame.
@BorrieBeats Pre-Chavez, at 147.I say it is an excellent fight.I think Taylor was damaged goods by time this fight took place. The proof is in the pudding, he lost to Crisanto Espana in his next outing. A guy a few years earlier he was have easily decisioned. Espana, was extended the distance by Rodolfo Aguilar. That shows about how much punching power Espana had. In 1988, a much smaller Chavez dropped Aguilar in the 1st and ended the fight in the 6th with a right uppercut and overhand right.
They have Taylor listed at 149lbs... was he really that small? He looks pretty built/thick here... im 5'4 and I weigh 150 and he looks way bigger than me hmmm
Taylor sadly was never the same fighter after the Chavez fight. It was a fight he had won got very very bad advice from the Duva's for the 12 & was stopped with 2 seconds remaining which was a terrible decision by Richard Steele. Norris was a good fighter a excellent technical fighter with power. But Taylor could have been one of the greats @ 140,147.
@fret1234 - Yeah, Norris was a monster. Seems like Taylor's people thought his speed might be enough to beat Norris, but they were sadly mistaken, as Norris could match speed with anyone - hand AND foot speed.
@2diefor8694 - Yes, this was after the Chavez fight. Taylor had moved up from 140 and won a title at 147, which he still had when he moved up to fight Norris at 154. Taylor still only had 1 loss at this point.
Taylor never had ko power against the better fighters, Norris looks faster with KO power, big difference. He woulda chopped down Julio too.

@sinusbradycardia yeh but thats more a testimate to greatness of chavez
johnosandra 1 month ago
@sinusbradycardia thats almost completly irrelevant to the valid point your making because chavez took brain capacity not punching power
the reason he lost to espana was he lost boxing capablities not punching power lol
the power is always the last thing to go
but yes if it wernt for the legendary julio cesar chavez meldrick taylor wouldve taken espana to school
