@MyTallTripod: Check out the Steve Goodman interview that runs around 9 minutes on YouTube. He tells it differently then Wikipedia. Point is, he (S.G.) was gracious about it. But, it's one is hard pressed to find an attribution by A.G. to the songwriter. I love the way A.G. does the song, but wish he had played fairly with this song. S.G. was a wonderful guy. I saw him often in Chicago.
The great singer/songwriter Steve Goodman wrote this song. I heard him perform it many times in Chicago before A.G. took it. (As Steve Goodman described it, it was not given, as in, a "gift.") As far as I know, A.G. never attributed the song to Steve Goodman and never paid him royalties. The Bealtes, Sinatra, everyone attributes the songwriter and pays royalties. It's just the right thing to do. I hope I'm wrong about this. Someone, please prove me wrong.
I liked Arlo Guthrie long before he recorded this -- but knowing the history behind this one (and the Steve Goodman story) I appreciate his music even more.
When I heard Arlo tell that story in Bloomington and right after I heard Chicago Farmer play the same song at Paulie's it made me kick myself for not giving Cody's CD to Arlo when I got his autograph.
I was ALWAYS so in LOVE with Arlo Guthrie.....his voice is so pure and full of such unbridled emotion....he still knocks my old socks off!!!! And he sure has done his Famous Dad Proud....what Joy listening to his Music in the late 60's and Early 70's THANK YOU for the MANY GOOD Times Arlo!!! ♥
I am going to bring a train wistle with me next time I see arlo. Not the big air horn one.. Just the little wooden one so he start singing this song I will add it in at the end. I think Arlo would like that.
I first heard this song back in 1972 and it makes such an emotional impact and still does after all these years. Thank you Arlo and much thanks to the dude who wrote it and gave it to you. peace ;)
Katie, I know what you mean. It would take hours for Arlo to answer all the questions I have. He is the best. I know you will enjoy his show. I hope to see him again soon. And I hope you get that chance to meet him.
arlo guthrie is coming to vancouver island music fest in july I'm so excited!! im wondering what i would ask him if i got the chance to talk to him haha

@johnwoodallmd Quoting Wikipedia
He (Steve Goodman) performed the song for Arlo Guthrie in the Quiet Knight, a bar in Chicago, and Guthrie agreed to add it to his repertoire....
I have no clue about royalties and I doubt if someone is going to provide you with canceled checks to prove your claims wrong.

I've only seen him do it on piano. Always wondered but knew he'd sound great on guitar. Thanks.

They played this song on my local news station back when Katrina hit and it showed the city in ruins. It was a sad video and very emotional to watch.

If you are referring to Steve Goodman, you are right. But of course Arlo is a great songwriter too.

Arlo used to always play this on the piano: it's really cool to hear it on the guitar.
