The original recording was in 1968 but this video is from the early 70's. The line up for the original recording was Archie Watkins -tenor, Jack Laws -baritone, Troy Burns -bass, and Ron Hutchins -lead. This early 70's line up featured Ron Hutchins -lead, Archie Watkins -tenor, Eddie Deitz -baritone and Marlin Shubert bass.
This version of the Inspirations is now known as Archie Watkins and Smokey Mountain Reunion, with the exception of Ronnie Hutchins.I hope to one day see them.
He was coming soon in Matthew 24:33-34. He was coming soon during all the countless predictions of Judgement Day for the centuries that followed. He was coming soon when they sang this song in 1968. He is coming soon today. I suspect He'll be coming soon for quite some time to come as well.
Are you sure of the year? The Oaks had the hit on this in 1970, and I thought this version came after. (I really don't remember the as being a hit for them, but I've been wrong before)
To clear many of the speculation posted about this video. 1) This was NOT recorded in 1968. I can remember off hand the exact year but I believe it was late 1971 or early 1972 just before Mike Holcomb joined the group as bass singer. 2) the bass singer is Marlin Shubert, one of the most accurate bass singers ever in gospel music. While Marlin did not have a great range his pitch was always spot on. 3) For those that posted the bass is Mike Holcomb, Mike never wore the WHITE suits.
@beatapt5 The song was written in 1942 by Robert Winsett and was recorded by numerous gospel & sacred artists prior to the Inspirations in 1968 and the ORB in 1969.
The bass singer is Mike Holcomb from Ball Ground, Georgia. He has been with them since he was about 19 years old. I saw them one time many years ago, right after he joined them. I am from a small town 10 miles north of Ball Ground.
There is so much to love about Southern Gospel, even for a backslider like me, so I had forgotten about one of the best -- that honky tonk piano player every one of these great groups had, banging on those keys as if he were Gabriel and had changed the his brass for ivory! Oh, how I love this music!
Martin has been their piano player from day one. He used to teach school and started singing with some of his students and eventually The Inspirations were born. Archie, the tenor has also always been a member. Ahhh - the good old days!
fanadiana: if you love this check out The Prodigal Son by The Cathedrals! Might be a good one for one who describes him/herself as backsliden. Maybe you're tired of eating after the swine and are ready to feast at the Father's table.

i think they made a mistake... in 1968 they said he's coming soon.... here yet?? oh goooosh.... im sorry but its just right there,.. like, 1968???? but anyway, i love Jesus.
When the Bible tallks abouit Jesus coming soon-- It means that His coming could happen at any time-- each Christian should have the thought of the immemenet coming of Jesus in his ro her heart
Marlin Shubert sang his bass part well here. His projection and accuracy in hitting his notes are noteworthy. This can be heard despite the older sound quality of this video.
I've also watched another video where Archie sang lead on this particular song, and liked it. Interestingly, Eddie Dietz sang the tenor part, what Archie usually sings. I admire their versatility.
Was wondering if anyone has resurrection ground by them also. Matt does this song and I love it but can never seem to find it. If anyone has it and would post it I would be very grateful.
Hi, Bro. Matt Dibler is my preacher and I will request for him to sing it one Sunday and record it, then post it for you. I love that song as well. God Bless.
Hey my preacher Mark Dibler is the writer of Ressurection Ground as you probably know, I dont have any way of posting it for you, but you can buy it probably from the inspirations website.
I have the pleasure of hearing Bro.Matt sing this songin person many times.the story of how it was written is heartbrking but the songs touches so many.my younger son has sung this song for several funerals and it has comforted many familys.I was looking for a video of it LITERALLY my dog ate my copyof the tape (well chewed itso it is no longer playable) she (the dog) got it off my nitestand. she has good TASTE in music....but wasn't it Matt's brother that wrote the song when his lil girl died?
yea it was Mark, his brother who wrote it about his daughter Marie. Its weird, its a small world the inspirations took the song all across america and it has toouched many lives.. but it came from a little town in South Carolina.. its amazing how God works :) Bro. Mark is my pastor...would you like me to give you his address? I believe he has a tape of his family singing Resurrection ground and you can ask him to send you one if you wanna buy it, or he may not even charge you.
I want to know if anyone has the song by the Inspirations, Daddy's Bible can be posted on here. I heard it for the first time the other day and it is beautiful. Please let me know. I lost my daddy last March 27th 2007. I still miss him but I know he is with Jesus waiting on me to come and join him with the rest of the family.
I noticed many said that's Marlin singing with them but are you sure Mike's been singing with them 3 years that would mean he started before '68 that's when this video was made. Plus look how skinny and tall the bass singer is I really think it's mike
Mike joined the Inspirations in the fall of 1972. His first album with the Inspirations was We Shall Rise. Marling Schubert recorded 4 albums with them, that I know of: Keep Your Eyes On Jesus, Our Inspiration, Old Time Singin', and Wake Up In Glory.
In the video here, this is definitely Marlin singing bass; you can tell by the timbre of his voice.
hey as my son once said to me ....gee cant a guy make one "MISNAKE".....alson brothe marlin shubers family just suffered tremendous family loss in a small plane crash.....many of his wifes family members were killed.

I'm 32 and love The Inspirations. I have precious memories of me, mom, and grandma going to their concerts when I was growing up in the 1980's. I still go to the concerts. I could sit all day and listen to The Inspirations. Keep up the good work boys. God Bless You All. Thanks for the video.
I'm going to go ahead and say that in my personal opinion Martin Cook and Archie Watkins are truly legends of Southern Gospel Music... and still are great today!!! after 40 + years in the biz!
I can't believe i'm saying this...but martin cook is playing like howard goodman in spots! lol still choppy but more like howard! i didn't even know he could play that fast though! thanks for the post!!!
This is my all-time favorite SG quartet! I have 50 of their albums...That's Ronnie Hutchins singing Lead, Archie Watkins singing Tenor, Eddie Deitz on Bariton, Marling Schubert singing Bass, and Martin Cook whoopin' up on the piano! Jack Laws jumps in there towards the end...he is one of the best baritones in the whole genre! Excellent group of Christian men!
What is the title of this video? Do you know anyone who has one for sale?
