By the way, the rhythmic pattern is pretty standard (in tabla). P{lease listen carefully. he doesn't allow the tabla player to do much. After his tan, he allows the tabla player to play. this is standard for him. he does what is v good at, badha taan, That's even in his budha pa. In his young age he did not allow it.
Of the finest quality known to me. I cannot think of anyone else with this much comprehensive understanding of this instrument, it's rhythmic sense, tonal cadence, or it's execution.
You are right about both: his - let's face it - terrible singing, and his amazing, brilliantly inventive, sitar-playing. As I understand it (somebody, tell me if I've got this wrong!), after his father, Enayat Khan died prematurely, his mother - herself a very powerful personality - made him promise he'd never sing in public, but agreed instead to foster his playing the sitar like his father. She was right! Listen to his utterly exhilarating playing here. A thrilling a performance; what energy!
@JoelvanLennep Khan Sahib's mother side of the family were all distinguised vocalists like Ustad Bande Ali Khan and so forth, the reason his mother did not want him to continue singing was because at the time he was starting to be known as a vocalist more than a singer and his mother insisted that he should play sitar because he has to carry on the family name of Ustad Imdad Khan & Ustad Enayat Khan...He was an excellent vocalist at that time...and knows Dhrupad aang and Khayal
Who is better Shujaat or Hidayat ? Are they of the same marriage of Vilayat?
