It flew over my house in Huntington. By the sound of it, I imagined it crashing into my house and killing me and my family. My friend soon came over babbling about some plane that went down in Cove Neck. We drove there, snuck through the woods, and found the crash. I remember a roll of toilet paper in the tree and approx 11 bodies laid out cover in white sheets. It was very sad to think about this part of life.

Yo vi la historia de este vuelo, se le acabo la gasolina y se cayo pero tambien fue porque los operadores de JFK en Nueva York no dejaban aterrizar el avion por la congestion que habia. Los pilotos del vuelo les mandaban mensajes diciendo que se les iba a acabar la gasolina que necesitaban aterrizar rapido, pero debido al mal tiempo estos mensajes no les llegaban a los operadores.

Many people died on that crash because the Seat of that plane was really terrible bad and it collapse to pieces when it crash and because how the plane crash in it's positions.....

Even in a Spanish Speaking country, the pilot would have to declare an emergency, because priority would normally just put in the first in line, but not out of the line. There is no reason for the FAA to be held responsible, except maybe for not enforcing fluent english on flight crews for international operators.

i must say, look how much this airline improved since this crash, a perfect safety record since then and now they have a brand new airbus fleet with personal tvs at each seat, what a great improvement from the crappy avianca of the 80s and 90s that had quite a few accidents

Sincero pesame a todos que perdierion sus sere queridos en este tragico acidente. Yo fui testigo a esta tragedia ya acudi al lugar del acidente esa triste noche.

Jamas olvidare de esa aeronave arrecostada sobre la loma que vi al llegar al lugar del siniestro.

Todavia me da tristesa cuando recuerdo esos momentos tan doloroso, especialmente cuando los socorristas, cargando el cadaver de uno de los aviadores, pasaron a mi lado.

part of the wreckage lay on Tennis Court Road, the accident site was near the intersection of this street and Cove Neck Road. The indoor tennis center on the corner was just 150yds from the crash site.

I have lived in Cove Neck all my life and remember that night, I was only 10, my parents left to walk down the road to see what the "boom" was while I stayed home with my grandmother.

I am sorry for all who lost anyone, however, JFK did not hold that aircraft. The crew came in too slow and the stall warnings went off. The crew aborted the first approach, when all the other aircraft were landing. He did not have the fuel for the second appoach. He also refused to declare a fuel emergency. A "minimum fuel" warning only means he can accept "no undue delay". We often got 10 minimum fuel declarations at a time after a storm. When they declare a fuel emergency, they are then #1.

The people who lived there left that night and never went back. The new ower of the house contacted me about getting a copy of these photo's and told me the story. I don't blame them, after seeing what they saw must have been horriable.. I wouldn't want to live ther either.

my dad was a fireman at the time and was there, he pulled a couple of people out of the plane and was on the news. You never know he might have saved your dad. seriously

If you saw the Mayday/Air Crash Investigation/Air Emergency episode about it, one survivor of the crash was like "I'm not sure if priority means the same thing in English, but doesn't it imply that you should come to me, and I need to go first?" (Not an exact translation quote)

This is part of the reason why the FAA had to take 40% of the liability, with Avianca getting 60%

Pero me acuerdo como en mi iglesia comentamos los jovenes sobre este accidente el viernes despues del accidente, y yo que soy fan de Avianca pensando en las fotos que habio visto en el diario, y recuerdo que elevamos una oracion por ustedes maxime cuando se trata de hermanos Colombianos.

Es una barbaridad lo que paso con este vuelo. Vi el documental de NatGeo, y creo que no necesitan decir tenemos una emergencia, creo que se sobreentiende cuando un avion esta volando y los pilotos les dicen no tenemos suficiente combustible, habia otras opciones para aterrizar... desgraciadamente se estrello el vuelo... pero en tierra, imagiense la desgracia si hubiera ocurrido en las costas de virginia?

En esa época, yo preparé un ánalisis de éste accidente para efectos de la investigación. Proximamente lo publicaré aquí en video. 73 pasajeros 3 tripulantes y 5 auxiliares de vuelo murieron. 85 pasajeros se salvaron. La Nat. Geographic produjo un video que fue transmitido el año pasado.

este avion fue enviado a vuelos de circuito mientras torre de control le daba el turno y la autorizacion para aterrizaje, volo durante varios minutos en circuito, luego cuando quedaban solo pocas libras de combustible tuvieron que dirigirse al aeropuerto como fuera, no pudieron llegar , no fue sufuciente el combustible, gracias a un buen planeo hubieron sobrevivientes...

no fue irresponsabilidad de pilotos ignorante, los controladores los mandaron a volar en circulo y se kedo sin gasolina tenia reservas para viajar al aeropuerto opcional pero el controlador le dio la gana de dejar ahi en espera para aterrizar

La explicacion de Oscar es correcta, aunque falto decir el avion hizo una primera aproximacion fallida y mientras se enfilaba de nuevo a la pista se quedo sin combustible. Un familiar mio iba en ese vuelo, por fortuna sobrevivio, pero casi la mitad de los pasajeros no tuvieron tanta suerte

si, ingles se puede decir que es lengua mundial, toda la tripulacion, los auxialiares de vuelo pilotos y demas deben saber ingles, es un requisito, los controladores de vuelo tambien deben saber ingles

El co-piloto the Avianca hablo en perfecto ingles, la defensa de la ATC fue que uso la palabra "priority" en ves de "emergency". Ante al asombro del mundo de habla hispana afirmaron con desverguenza y desfachatez que la interpretacion de "prioridad" en español no es la misma que en ingles. Los manuales de procedimientos de emergencia en ingles claramente dice "Woman and children will be given PRIORITY!" o sea que seran atendidos primeros y los demas tendran que esperar. No es lo mismo?

Yo tuve que ver con éste accidente. Efectivamente el avión se quedó sin combustible. Pues lo detuvieron en ruta haciédole dar vueltas y más vueltas. Incluso la tripulación les indicó a los controladores de aproximación que solo tenían combustible para 5 minutos más; no obstante los tuvieron sobrevolando más de 20 minutos después de éste aviso. Alcanzó a hacer una aproximación a Kennedy pero fue fallida y cuando estaban para hacer el segundo intento de aterrizaje se acabó el combustible.
