After the English left the Singhalese did the same by denying good education to the Tamils. But the tamils responded first peacyfully, but later with brutal force. They invented the suicide bomber, not the Moslim extremists. With suppresion of the Tamil diaspora they made billions (not to mention other criminal offences) to finance this total useless war. With the help of the US and India (CIA also worked in Sri Lanka, check the guy in the YouTube movie from the killing of a general in Colombo).
Well, we can discuss politics here. Both sides did made mistakes. But a fact is that we can blame it on the English occupation. They couldn't cooperate with the Singhalese people, because they where to proud to work for them. So the English shipped in a lot of Tamils from Tamil Nadu to work for them (especialy on the teaplantations). Then the English try to break the power of the Singhalese mayority by putting Tamils in key positions.
There is no country in the world with so many people living in peace with the nature! Sri Lanka is the land of the gods! Greets from Holland (visited Sri Lanka 5 times!).

Beautiful compilation of natural Sri Lanka. But it only shows paradisal aspects from miles above, far above human level, so this video gives a misleading view. If the video would have zoomed in a little, then probably you would see military, refugee camps, pollution and so on. Don't misunderstood me, Sri Lanka IS a very beautiful country, but a good video shows how this island is affected by its 20 million inhabitants as well. Wll, in the last 3 years i have spent 9 months in SriLanka, I love it there so much, the beauty and the tranquility mixed with the hospitality of the locals have persuaded me to give up my professional career and move there permanently! I leave in 4 months, almost to the day, and im working at a childrens orphanage in Negombo.
So guys, say what you want about this place, but unless you have been you could never understand the charm of the pearl.

You are absolutely right! Sri Lanka is totally differrent than the rest of India's neibours. It has great potential to come up like Singapore (even better). Literacy rate, quality of life, freedom for women, life expectancy, and so on... are high when you compare to India.
