I think his technique did improve a lot after this but I would say that it has already started getting worst in the last 2 years. He is epic and wonderful for melodramma... verdi, turandot, carmen, but he works too hard for my taste for the characters of a similar fach that are simpler people ie rodolfo etc...
This sounds very good, but seems a bit relentlessly dramatic for this kind of song; it's not not he's singing Wagner.. I saw Pavarotti in another video saying he first saw Alagna singing neapolitan songs in a manner that seemed too heavily dramatic for his voice and he recommended he sing more lyrically, and he thought (at the time of the video) he had done so and had chosen very suitable roles. Arguably he has apparently moved away from that a bit again more recently.
Formidable, Fenominal, Stupendo, fantastico, meraviglioso, maravilloso, etc. Robérto Alagña is definitely one of the best singers to come into being over the last 50 years, I absolutely adore his singing style, range, voice, talent, skill, etc, and I'm certain that he will be with us for a very long time.
good job....but I love how Mario Merola sang this song.....he was not a tenor but he was from Naples....and who could sing a neapolitan song better than a neapolitan singer?
No offense intended but this is a mess. It's difficult but NOT an aria and he's struggling with key, tone, pacing, lacking line and direction, etc. Try listening to Corelli sing the same aria (Tu, ca nun chiagne) also on Youtube I believe.
look at 03:00 and see if he is struggling with the key or not.. ok i also liked corelli version more.. but lets give this man the prize of his work.. good job..
He needs to get back to this singing. He should not have changed it. He is not pushing here either, he is working. For God's sake it is not like he is quilting or something. He is singing a very difficult song with his full voice. Of course he is going to need to physically work. It is just ignorant and inane to say he is pushing. I hope he gets back to this kind of singing.
He pushs of course because this is a real heavy song. It's the Otello of Neopolitan songs. Look at the other versions posted on YouTube - Corelli and Del Monaco. This was probably a little bit to heavy for him then. But it is still a wonderful, wonderful performance.
Unfortunately he darkens his voice way too much since a few years, it was beautiful. The technique shows some possible problems regarding longevity, even though he pushes here, he had more bloom in the voice in this period. I love his dedication!
1 - The timbre of his voice : it was much lighter, more "solaire". I think that is what WillLiang expressed. I much prefer his timbre at that time than today, this coming first to technique in my taste.
2 - Technique : he's improved a lot during those last 14 years, while his timbre has begun to darken.
Some of us are first sensitive to timbre and then technique, other by the opposite...
I think it is a matter of taste: the voice obviously has changed in the last 14 years, but I also believe that his singing technique is perfect. Seeing him live at the Met in Faust in May 05, and in Pagliacci in Los Angeles in September 05 has been 2 of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. The freedom in his voice, his lyricism, perfect legato and perfect french diction are insuperable.
this alagna was the best.not this now.very beutifull full lyric tenor!!!!!
