well actually it was a parlour song originally - it predates the war - and so it would have been sung very formally in elegant drawing rooms - the Dylon-esque solo guitar or blue grassy interpetations are the "wrong" ones who are really out of period and out of synch to the song's actual cultural context
Nice, but a little too polished. I think this song needs to have more of a folkish feel, seeing how it was sung in camps to the delight (and sorrow) of poor enlisted soldiers far away from home.
What a beautiful song. And a bit of a tear jerker.....as it was supposed to be.
I think it was Mary Chestnut in her Diary who said ., when they were going to play this song ,
"Oh no not Lorena"...... because it was so sentimental..

What a lovely rendition of Lorena! Thank you I've been searching for someone who sings it this was as it is the way that it was originally sung.
