I cry everytime. I'm so glad my parents love me and are in my life. I am glad that in this show Uncle Phil stepped in to be a great father figure for Will. So many children need a father figure in their life...
Haven't seen my dad in over 5 years now, barely before that, I email him every so often but I rarely get a decent reply...he forgot how old I was on my 16th birthday, and he got the wrong date last year ( he sends cards)...it's hard to describe the feeling of hating someone, but at the same time, loving them...this made me tear up
I see my father maybe once every year. We talk sometimes too. I love him. But I don't expect anything more from him. He is who he is. Needless to say, the episode messed me up. Great acting.
@cowmagnet Well I hope you know you'll do better without a father figure like that. Not that he even deserves that title. I wish you all the best in the future - I know you'll do yourself proud.
My dadz iz the same way. And it makes me say like kanye. Its bittersweet i dont want you, but i need you. I luv ya nd hate ya at the very same time. I luh ya dad.
Will's emotions in this video was all real. He did this all from his heart. I hope y'all understand how beautiful this scene is.. All his emotions. All his words.. Completely real.
This was 100% real. Wills dad left him and his mom when he was little. In the actual show he was supposed to just walk off. That hug was real the emotion was real. None of this was in the script. They kept it this way because it was do powerful. Will has been through so much and I love him for that. -3
After I saw this, Will Smith became one of my favourite actors of all time. He says everything that Ive said in my head a thousand times over in my head about my own unknown father and puts it absolutely perfectly. Definitely one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in my whole life and connects on an almost identical, personal level to my own circumstances. Great job will.
My dad skipped out when I was around 6 months, decided he didn't want the responsibility anymore of a wife and child cause he was only 18. He popped in every now and then, but eventually it was yrs between contact. Mom always offered for me to see him, but never worked out. He'd make promises about getting me something or going somewhere but never followed through. I'm 26 now, and just recently found I have two half sisters, 1 1/2 & 4 mos. Just makes me wonder why I wasn't good enough.
@bestonlineguide Alright well yes there are people who are in control of our lives more then others but not to the extent your thinking of. Like yes people run the world but the Illuminati is just completely bullshit. I dont know why everyone obsesses over that. Its known that there are few people who control the world but not these crazy fucked up bastards. Fucking karl marx started the whole theory.
Damn, man. This scene always chokes me up. My father (like many others) wasn't there for me. He died on Feb. 4th 2011. This scene also showcases Will's talent.
just the two of us of us...cmon hay hay were goin to the beach, grab a couple of toys and let dadda strap u in the car seat/ oh what's that smell? dadda musta runned over a skunk, and dont worry bout mama, she's takin a little nap in the trunk lol
Screw that! If I ever get to have any kids, I ain't ever leaving them. I can't imagine how'd be like for your son or daughter--your own flesh and blood, curse you for your cowardice!
Will was actually supposed to play it off and then walk away, and there was originally an alternate scene that was supposed to happen, but he actually completely cut out what was supposed to be said, and did all of his own dialogue. The hug at the end of this scene is completely genuine, and this was a stepping stone in Will’s career where he started to take on the “do what feels, sounds, and looks right” approach to his acting.
Coming from the heart, I tear up every time I watch this because I can relate. But it makes me strive to be the best father I can be because I don't ever want my daughters to experience this kind of pain.
This scene is so sad regardless I it's scripted. Many people commenting are saying it came from will's heart, this is truly how his father treated him. I just believe you can't watch this and not feel any sadness or empathy towards this. Especially when this same shit happened to you, to many father out there exactly like this. My father left me when I was 6 weeks old, so fuck whatever he has to say about walking out on me.
My mother walked out on us when I was 2 years old. I spent my whole life struggling with the same thought that was expressed in the last line. It hurts, but you have to move on and show them that it's their loss, not yours. I grew up without my mother, but with the support of my wonderful grandparents and father. It took a long time to realize, but if I made it this far without her, I don't need her.
I can't imagine not being part of my kid's life, I just don't get it. How can you have a kid out there that you helped create and not love it. Just seems like a natural instinct to love your kid.
just a lil story to clear up things the dialogue was an spontaneous decision by Will. His dad had also abandoned him and his mom, but when Will became famous he tried to come back as if nothing had happened. The hug was also genuine and even thought the scene that was planned was for him to shrug it off and walk away the hug was kept instead.
my dad grew up without a father. when my dad found out that his girlfriend was pregnant, he stuck by her side because he refused to be llike his dad. now he has five children and he is in every last one of our lives. he is a better father than his dad ever was.
This is STILL easily one of the saddest scenes in television history. I don't care what anybody says, you can NOT watch this and not feel at least somewhat depressed afterwards.
It makes me cry im blessed to have a father i dont know your guys pain but it just goes to show your troopers for goin through life in this pain people who dislike dont know the value of life this episode was meant for these people doesnt matter about acting
The messed up thing is that so many of us relate to this scene, but growing up how many of us had any friends that honestly understood how much this fucks with your head? I'm 23 and I still don't have any friends that can understand, but that anger pushed me through every swim meet and every exam when I was in high school
This and the episode when Will gets shot is when everyone in America knew that Will Smith could act. I always thought Will was a better actor than comedian.
its so many kids who feel his pain -- felt it then && still do now. I'm one. I know plenty more. It made me cry when I saw it air originally -- still makes me tear up now. to all you part time parents who think you can walk in and out of your kids lives - FUCK YOU. it hurts more than you think

Actually, Will went off script with most that dialogue. It was mainly how he really felt, so that's why uncle Phil looks sorta speechless at that one point.
@iiLulu10 You guys should read up once in a while.
" Smith credits his father's dedication when discussing his own involvement in the lives of his three children: "I look at my father and how he was able to keep four kids fed and clothed and still managed to find time to spend with us." "
Made me cry when I saw how it ended. I can relate except for the fact that my pops never came back into my life. I never knew him or what he looked like. All I want is to see what he looked like and ask why he left us and why couldn't accept his responsibilites as a man and an expecting father. Other than that I don't want him in my life. Like Will said to hell w/ him
this episode always made me cry so much and in a weird way that makes it one of my favourites, they never play it on tv tho so i'm so glad i've been able to watch this bit again x

Moms told me he ran out when she told him she was pregnant. All I want is to see what he looked like and ask why he left us and why couldn't accept his responsibilites as a man and an expecting father. Other than that I don't want him in my life. Like Will said to hell w/ him
