  • The main problem with Canto-pop songwriting nowadays is the lyrics are based on Mandarin wording rather than how Cantonese is used naturally. ( ofc, it's not the only problem ... )

That's why it tends to come out awkward and sometimes even unintelligible.

afaik, those that do use natural Cantonese wording are not serious work ( i.e they're spoofs, jokes, gangsta songs etc ... ). Quite a shame :/

If someone were to write a serious canto-pop song with natural lyrics, it'll be refreshing !

  • jasmine should guard her pet tiger the chinese will kill it and use it for chinese medicine

  • Guess what, Madarin chicken is more popular than Cantonese chicken. So there's your winner!

  • Damn, I love Aladdin's voice.

  • To all of you discussing the Mandarin Cantonese tonal thing, here's my view on it. Cantonese is more tonal cuz they have 7 tones while Mandarin has 4. Mandarin has a lot of sh, zh, and ch sounds while Cantonese doesn't have that. That's probably why some of you perfer Cantonese, but I might be wrong.

  • @YinYangPeace WHOA! Just found out that Cantonese has 11 tones. lol

  • does anyone know who is singing this as the voices for these two

  • Cantonese is a very poetic dialect, many classical poems from thousands of years ago rhyme and flow well in Cantonese than in mandarin.

  • Does anyone know where I can download this whole movie in cantonesev?

  • I know Cantonese! I studied it for nine years at school but then I dropped it for French. After listening to many different versions I like the French version the best, then the Russian one, then this one

  • I love Jazmin´s voice, she sound so chinese!! adorable

  • I Russel peters lead you to the thought that brought you here like this LOL

  • haha i'm cantonese and i have no idea what our language sounds like to other people i've been told it's very rough

  • Canto is so powerful and manly.

  • i actually heard this one before the actual english version :3 hehe

  • :D

  • Can any body tell me the cantonese sang by who?

  • aww i remember this from my childhood :)

  • I'm proud to speak Cantonese~ I love this version, its so sweet!

  • If all Cantonese speakers spoke this softly, it wouldn't cop as much flack as it does. Unfortunately, a loud group of Cantonese-speakers isn't usually as enjoyable to listen to. :P It's an interesting language, though.

  • @BIuejay

I agree! I'm a native Cantonese speaker and I was talking about teeth to my friend (don't ask me why XD) in Cantonese, and my other friend thought I was fighter with her. Cantonese had harsh sounds, but if you speak softy; it sounds great!

  • @98Stellar

yeah everytime I speek cantonese to a non-cantonese speaker they think I'm fighting with them. I guess it's because cantonese is spoken on a lower scale than most languages are. Maybe that's why people mistake us as fighting. I've even had someone ask me why we cantonese people are always fighting day in and day out. XD

  • @WolframxYuuri95

Yup! Listen to that girl in this video sing. It sounds really pretty. Ya, acutally its cause no matter how many "notes" there are 9, that Cantonese have, its what we call "flat" unlike English.

  • @98Stellar

On a personal note, I kind of like speaking cantonese. It makes my voice lower and my singing much more smoother than others. It gives me goosebump when listening to those english singers that have a ridiculous high screeching singing voice. Not much american girls have low voice like I do. People even mistake me for a guy sometimes. Though I think it's perfect and much more soothing.

  • @WolframxYuuri95

I love White girls with feminine deep voices.

  • @WolframxYuuri95 hey, maybe you´re a contralto!!! good for you!

  • @TheDreamerboy77

    contralto? What's that?

  • @WolframxYuuri95 A contralto is the lowest feminin voice, like Cher

  • @TheDreamerboy77

Really? I always thought it was either soprano or alto. XD I always had trouble explaining my voice. Though my original voice is low and kind of gruff I can actually sing soprano and really high too! XD

  • @WolframxYuuri95 A contralto can sing high notes, , but it´d sound darker than a soprano because of the colour or timbre of the voice.

However, a teacher is supposed to tell your vocal range while you´re singing, I only suggest!!!

Contralto are really difficult to find, I only know two , Liza Minelli & Cher.

Don´t forget that Mezzosopranos have a great hability in the lower notes too!! :P

  • @TheDreamerboy77

This is awesome! I learn something new everyday on the internet! And the adults say the internet is bullshit! >:(

  • @WolframxYuuri95

German and Canto, the angry languages.

  • @BIuejay haha! I know what you mean, and when it gets loud, it gets LOUD! but it is very pleasant to listen to in a library environment.

  • @BIuejay

Especially at concerts, oh my motherfucking god, those Cantonese girls need to shut the fuck up and let the singer do the singing cause those girls can't sing for shit.

  • i actually think that the cantonese version sounds much sweeter :P and i like their voices more.

  • The Cantonese is awesome.

  • love this version, the lyrics 分享美好新的世界 reflects let me share this whole new world with you...^^ it's sad that many people think Cantonese is a vulgar and rude language :(

  • So proud that I speak Cantonese !

  • @catherineng129129 same:)

  • @xsakuraphie I have already corrected my mistake in another comment after other people pointed it out. It just didn't get to the top like the other one. Lol. Thanks anyway.

  • i have almost all the Disney movies in Cantonese because that is what my family speaks and we lost the Aladdin dvd im so happy for watchin this herer on youtube

  • So beautiful! I am definatly gonna try learning Canto >:T!

  • Where could i watch Disney Cantonese movies

  • AAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAJAJJAHAHHAHAHA

  • is there a link for this song

  • i sing and i also love speaking cantonese because its so tone-y.

dont be dissing my language :P

its fun to speak because its semi drama and stuff.

  • lol in the end, if the person can sing, it doesn't matter what language its in. Cantonese is REALLY hard to sing WELL in;)

this guy has a really nasally voice. *prince of egypt canto ver sounds amazing;)

  • two words: amazingly beautiful <3

  • 開心有得揀果個MAy姐唱...

  • Cantonese sounds weird but its hard to learn as well, you know...

  • this is cool :) especially since the story of aladdin originally took place in china, too x3

  • the lyrics is a bit strange...

    but still beautiful^ ^

  • LISTEN IM CANTO. there are 8 sounds. end of story.

  • what's the difference between: cantonese, mandarin and chinese?

  • @oOItalyZmdOo Chinese is divided in many different dialects (much like many other languages). Mandarin and Cantonese are the two most used dialects. Mandarin is the official language of China, making it the most commonly spoken. Cantonese is a very popular dialect in southern China but, not as used as Mandarin.

  • @oOItalyZmdOo Cantonese and Mandarin are 2 different dialects. Mandarin is the most popular, due to it being the official language of China, although Cantonese is popular in southern China. Both dialects are Chinese.

  • I love jasmine's voice I think she have the best voice of all together with the dutch Jasmine but the langueges sound like ding dong toi XD

  • omg i love this !im half viet half canto! CANTONESE + THIS SONG = <3

  • I'm actually surprised they managed to do a Cantonese version that doesn't sound bad D: there's at least 8/9 tones to work with, and the moment the tone goes weird, the words they sing will have a totally different (and illogical) meaning.

  • @Coffeekinns how many songs have you heard in cantonese?

  • Cantonese probably sounds weird to some because you make the sounds with a different part of your throat. Try speaking Canto and English and feel the vibration in your throat and you'll see that a different part vibrates. People think it sounds like arguing probably because it's quite a loud language lol.

  • It's beautiful!

  • A very beautiful version and a very beautiful language :)

  • Oh, and I credit the fact that I don't know the correct # of tones on that it's my mother language so I've never learned the pronunciations on a "technical" level, haha. It was the other part of my comment that I wanted to emphasize--not the # of tones but just the fact that there are a LOT of tones. So everyone, please excuse my wrong technicality. I realize there weren't a "lot" of people correcting me, only 2-3. It just feels like a lot since there's one every once in a while. :)

  • @pinkayyy haha don't worry. I learnt it because I lost it when I was a kid - like a toddler sort of thing. It's a pity mandarin is the main language of China though.. the gluttoral stops make the old poems sound good, whilst the old poems in Mandarin don't sound right due to the lack of them! I suppose this veers a bit too much into politics so I'll stop there lol.

  • Comment removed

  • cantonese definitely flow better go read some chinese poem in cantonese and mandarine see. Cantonese pwn any language, try learn all the swearing in diff language u will see cantonese pwn gg no re

  • i really like this language its very unique with its tones:)

  • @xJesusForeverx so do I.

  • I speak Mandarin (from Taiwan) and I love this version, because Cantonese has a lot of short sounds that make the language sound powerful. I don't see any point for Mandarin speakers to disrespect the language.

  • This song in Cantonese somehow sounds pretty exotic :). But very nice though I don't think the voices are that extra ordinary!

  • Comment removed

  • @kitzostudio i grew up with canto and english and mandarin im use to it even though im a canto speaker mainly

  • Does anyone have the lyrics?

    It´s so beautiful this song

    OmG!

    Greetings from Mexico

  • anybody got the cantonese lyrics to this?

  • THIS is beautiful I mean really holy hell!! I like this much more than mandarin..mandarin (to me not trying to be mean so if it sounds it im sorry) sounds like they are repeating the same words/sounds over and over..this sounds much better...arigatou!

  • this version goes well with the words that they are singing in english

  • I love Jasmine's voice in Cantonese.

  • I Love this version *V*

  • i speak cantonese but i think the mandarin verison is better....but jasmine 's voice is pretty good tho

  • so you are saying that they flyed more than 1000 miles to china to watch firework in less then 3 minutes,

    Whoa thats pretty fast.

*also its amzing how they don't need any gas masks to bearth up there.

  • Very nice :) I wish the guy was more musical though LOL so flat.

  • Cantonese version is cool :) I think it's better than Mandarin, no offense hehe

  • @wincipoet

Cantonese is better than Mandarin because it is completed with the 7 tones, unlike Mandarin which has only 4. That's why Cantonese sounds poetic when sung or spoken.

  • @anythingnew yes but those 7 tones make it so much hard for non-natives to learn that dealing with only 4. I speak mandarin and I have trouble withe all 7...I'm trying though. However the Cantonese singing voice is very beautiful but the Taiwanese spoken voice is very elegant, at least I think so ^^

  • @anythingnew I disagree, Mandarin sounds wayy more poetic sung or spoken for the reason that it only has 4 sounds.

  • @Kiwiness Sorry, but Mandarin doesn't sound like a piano. Therefore, it is limited.

  • @anythingnew Since when did I say Mandarin sounds like a piano and it doesn't even make sense. In general opinion, the more tone a language got, the more harsh it would sound to the ears. Anyway I am Cantonese and I think Mandarin songs are way better than HK pop.

  • @anythingnew Since when did I say Mandarin sounds like a piano and it doesn't even make sense. In general opinion, the more tone a language got, the more harsh it would sound to the ears. Anyway I am Cantonese and I think Mandarin songs are way better than HK pop.

  • @Kiwiness

The more tone a language has, the broader its spectrum for making music. Oh, since you are Cantonese you look for the lyrics and not the melody and rhythm. I am an outsider listening in, and I focus more on the power and emotion of the melodies.

  • @Kiwiness As partial as I may sound by saying this, I think this song sounded much better in cantonese than in mandarin. And yeah, I am cantonese too. Though I acknowledge that generally, I like mandarin songs more these days, but that has much more to do with the current flow of the canto music industry than with the language itself.

  • @Kiwiness a lot of mando songs sound better than newer canto ones because they've got good composition and rhythm, however many of the older canto songs still sound good today. the canto music industry only fell apart recently with whatever they are coming out with now... But still, I prefer canto over mando

  • @anythingnew I real prefer how mandarin sounds to the cantonese. Cantonese sounds too weird, mandarin is flowing ..

  • @charguigou Maybe Cantonese sounds ugly to those who speak it, but to an outsider like me, it sounds very powerful because of its tonal range.

  • @anythingnew I don't speak it, but I don't like it. At least for female voice. The only one I really like in cantonese is aurora !

  • @anythingnew this is bullshit. first of all, technically speaking cantonese has 8 or 9 different tones. second of all, whether a dialect has 4, 6 or 9 tones it doesn't make it more or less poetic. For example take a look at Wenzhounese dialect, it has 9 different tones just as Cantonese, but I never heard anyone saying it's poetic or that it sounds nice when sung or spoken. I think its a personal opinion when you say Cantonese or Mandarin chinese sounds better.

  • @xuelihu1 eheheeh, wouldn't it be cool if there was a language with 50 tones?

  • Jasmines voice is so beautiful on this Cantonese version :)

  • 沒搞錯的話這個版本是由潘奇發, 陳美鳳所唱的

    周華健和陳奕迅的確唱過這首歌,但絕對不是電影版

This is the version in the movie and is sung by潘奇發, 陳美鳳,not chau wah kin (emil chau) or eason chan. they did have their own version though

  • i like mandarin or Taiwanese better cuz i don't understand a word of this but it sounds real nice.

  • Heehee! Cantonese makes me chuckle. xP

  • before in the 90s disney's canto voice acting was awesome, look at this and ursula in little mermaid. now they use shit like twins and boyz and stuff, nyeh.

  • ^agreed

  • @BattleOlly

Again, I keep saying: Shine > Twins. Not SHINee, but Shine.

  • i'm canto but i dont understand it as well as the mando version T__T

  • My favourite Version!!!

  • wow it does sound thai! xD

    but its def canto

    i like this version

  • how the hell does it sound... thai.. its totally canto.

I know this im not even blood chinese.

  • They're both of the same family of languages. Listen to someone say 1-10 in Thai and then in Canto. You'll be surprised :)

  • alright.. so I took a look @ the 1-10 in Thai and it is similar to canto.. you win this round.

  • @manisdogfish thai 1nueng or ed 2song or yee 3sam 4sii 5haa 6hok 7jed 8paed 9gao 10sip
  • @manisdogfish Don't think numbers is a good way to see if they're in the same language family, as neighbouring countries like Japan and Korea also borrowed Chinese vocabulary extensively (including numbers) and they are from a completely different language family.

  • i love 1:09 through 1:33

  • @chopaface Not Cantonese like Thai,is Thai like Cantonese.Glory to HongKong.XDD

    *Offense FREE*

  • lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Emil Chau & Sarah Chen

  • i thought the male singer is: chau wah kin

  • That is NOT LEON LAI for crying out loud don't make stuff up

  • like this song~ who r the singers??

  • really?? doesn't sound too much like him..hehe or maybe just i can't recognize his voice hehe

  • u guys shld listen to the version of eason chen's its even more romantic

  • ohmygosh, my childhood right there. i recently watched the english version of aladdin for the first time, its soooo weird. lol

  • i think canto flows very well because it has many tones... ^^; i mean, music has do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do. eight tones right? like a scale. maybe the people that think canto sounds weird are probably the people that don't really know how the language sounds like.

  • I agree with you.

  • I'd like to know the Chinese singers who sang this in Cantonese. I think sang Jasmine very well.

  • I think the people who insults the Cantonese language by saying it sounds like people are arguing don't appreciate the variety of the language. It depends on the tone of the people speaking it. The reason why Cantonese doesn't flow as well as mandarin is because Cantonese has 8 different tones and there are much more ups and downs. However, I don't think that gives anyone the right, even cantonese speakers, to insult Cantonese.

  • Yeah that's true, and I think the only times that some people are actually exposed to Cantonese is within Chinese restaurants or an arguement, otherwise Cantonese speakers are quite calm and serene in tone.

  • That's totally true!

One mistake there though... there're nine differnet tones, not 8, but still... Thanks for saying what I was thinking for a while~!

  • Personally, I think Cantonese flows even better, especially if you read some classical texts--it may be an even older language than Mandarin.

  • @pinkayyy im absolutely with you in your explanation bout the cantonese....

  • @pinkayyy 6 tones.. the rest are gluttoral stops.

  • @Zophixan Lots of people have been sending me their own information about how many tones and so far the one I'm convinced of is 9.

I have to admit I didn't really do my research before leaving the comment but I didn't know I was speaking so many people's minds in the first place. Thanks for telling me your input. I'll have to verify it with an actual Chinese instructor, lol. Everyone seems to have their own number of tones in mind for some reason.

  • i noticed that cantonese has more sounds that mandarin...but also many tones 7/8 O.o wow, this is so difficult to learn.

  • Yep. I speak Cantonese at home but I learned Mandarin while I was in elementary school on Sundays, so I understand Mandarin and speak a little but I've always been hesitant to speak Mandarin because sometimes I think the word that comes out of my mouth is Cantonese instead of Mandarin especially if the words are very similar sounding to Cantonese. lol

  • LOL me too.

  • Lucky! I only know Canto. I wish I could understand both.

  • i really like this version!

  • Woah, the Cantonese version sounds so beautiful ^^~ (Actually every version of this song is amazing!)

  • haha so true!

  • where can I find an mp3 of this?

  • i have it!...

well, not really, but i can download it and give it to you :]

    chel x

  • who sang this?

  • I think both the Mandarin and Cantonese versions are both so beautiful. I just love the Chinese language ^-^ Both have a sort of poetic, almost fluid sound.

  • as a fellow canto speaker, i have to agree XD

  • OMG.

I heard this song when i was a little kid.

    brings back memories =D

  • mandarin = drama

    cantonese = action movies

  • agreed.

also, pop music is better in mandarin while rock is better in cantonese.

  • LOL that is so truee (: haha
