  • The vaults are very difficult back then. Nadia is powerful and masculine, just look at her leg muscle. She can knock out 10 guys with her powerful body. What great power from her body.Nadia is indeed a powerful and strong gymnast.

  • @stellamilanese

I think you misunderstood my first comment. It was not meant as disrespect to Nadia. She is legendary and an amazing gymnast.(and my mom's Idol!) I was simply saying that I was surprised that gymnastics has changed so much that the skills they did in Nadia's time are now skills that we compete in level 8.

And as far as don't hate, my mom said you should live by your own words...

And she also told me after this contact not to reply again.

  • Didn't Mary Lou Retton do this exact vault in 1984?

  • @zeldafreak701 I don't know what MLR's 'second vault' was [if she had one], but her main vault was a Tsuk full. Nadia's first vault is also a Tsuk [half turn onto the horse] but she does a back pike with no twist.

  • difficulty of vaults have really changed!!!! thats a level 8 vault nowadays!!!!

  • I'm a level 8 gymnast and I can do both of her vaults!!!

  • @kjilm6 are you famous? no. have you done things that have gone way beyond the skill level of today's gymnasts? no. the fact that you can do her vaults does not impress anyone. at the time she was the best, so don't hate.

  • @stellamilanese13

I never said anything about hating. She's amazing. And I don't think you should be talking. What have you done that impresses anyone? That's right. NOTHING!

Oh, yeah and I just won Regionals and States in the hardest region and state on bars.

I hope we're done here because I really hate being snotty like this, although it seems like you're thing.

    So, thanks. End of conversation.

  • @kjilm6 Well Carly, after a little bit of internet digging, I saw that at your precious regional competition, you placed 49th and the competition was at Bart Conner's gym. I wonder, did you so wonderfully perform Nadia's vault there, in front of her husband? Maybe even in front of her? That would be embarrassing.

  • @stellamilanese13 Really? Was that necessary? Funny that you are the one telling people to stop hating, yet you are the nastiest one of all.

  • @stellamilanese13 Wow, you are really nasty. I don't think anyone was hating. Just noting the difference between what a "difficult" vault was back in Nadia's time, and what we consider difficult now. I can't do ANY vaults, so I AM impressed that kjilm6 can do Nadia's vaults. So don't speak for everybody.

  • C'est clair que si une gymnaste fait ça au saut aux JO, elle ne sera pas sur le podium . La difficulté de l'époque n'est pas la même que maintenant.

  • aha , I have level 6 gymnasts at my gym doing these vaults . :)

  • how many points? P.S this is the only event that she didn't get perfect ten.

  • How Come The Scores Are Different Now a Days ?

Like There The Highest Is Ten, Right?

    And Nastia And Shawn Get Like, 17.025 n All? :S :S :S

  • @XxXHorseLoverXxX1 I doubt anyone has every gotten over a 17 :/ And if you knew anything about gymnastics you would know that the system changed in 2006.

  • @Gr33nkiwi

    Nastia Liukin scored a 17.050 and a 17.100 at the 2008 VISAS.

  • @TwisterFlipp95

USA execution judges don't mark as severely at worlds. I was talking about no one getting over a 17 at an international competition, seeing as some countries mark easier than others just at the national level.

(IE, America Cup (or SCAM) marks VERY easily with routines getting 9.0+ in execution (in the new code) when they should have received low 8.0's)

  • Okay someone please explain to me. I watched Shawn Johnson in the 2008 olympics and I saw her do what i think they called a 2 1/2 twist (something like that) and that looked 10x harder than what Nadia Comaneci (AKA the greatest gymnast of all time) did.

  • the difficulty of vaults has changed over time this vault was done in 1976 and shawn johnson's vault was done in 2008 so of course shawn's vault was much harder but this vault was already very hard for nadia's time

  • Nobody dreamed that what she did was possible until *after* she did it. It's the natural evolution of sport: you first need a genius like Nadia to set a higher standard for those less gifted to achieve. In my mind, there is no doubt that if Nadia were a 6 year old watching Shawn Johnson in 2008, that in 2016 she would set an even-higher standard. Mark her brilliance not by what gymnasts have achieved since her performances, but by what was achieved before -- and nothing even compares.

  • Plus the apparatus itself was more difficult to vault off then.

  • @Stonymypony You mean you can't answer your own question?

  • @MeanestCoachEver Hey listen I don't know much about gymnastics so I was asking a question. If your going to be rude to someone that is not being mean but trying to learn more than your the mean one. Give me a break I didn't understand so like any curious person I asked a question.

  • @Stonymypony All I did was ask you a question because I believe you could have figured it out on your own.

  • @MeanestCoachEver Well i believe you are wrong. I don't know much about gymnastics, so I asked a question that I believe was important to understanding gymnastics past and present.

  • @Stonymypony The fact that this comment got 4 thumbs up makes me fear for the future of gymnastics. First of all, this was 32 years ago, and the vault was NOT as springing as it has been made, it was very solid unlike today where it has a cushion and a little spring. Then there's the shape of the vault. This vault was extremely dangerous and a few gymnasts have become paralyzed vaulting.

  • @Gr33nkiwi okay thanks for the info. I think that people gave it a thumbs up because they liked that i asked the question. Don't worry about the future of gymnastics. It will be fine.

  • @Stonymypony The fastest typist isn't necessarily the best writer. Keep that in mind when comparing ANYBODY today with Nadia.

  • @Stonymypony

Gymnastics has dramatically changed. The yurchenko style vault [Shawn] wasn't even invented until 1982. The vault was different --- different horse [it was around until 2000 --- only one woman did the 2.5 on the old horse] and the springboard had little springs.

  • @TwisterFlipp95 Amanar + Zamo did it didn't they? Sorry don't mean to spark an argument I'm just wondering.

  • and she went to the olympics for that?

  • @mbmvcvdpzp no,,, she went to make the first Olympic ten in history!!! and seven times.

She is AMAZING BEST gymnast EVER

and guys do not be rude she was only 14 years old and that was really difficult at that time plus Shawn was 16 at her first olympics with a different vault and some things to make it plus

  • olympic vaults are very low back then.. now there is people doing 2 1/2 twisting layouts .

  • Is it just me, or is her form weird on the second one?

Great first vault for the time - and her age!

  • ya the vaults back then would have been horror compared to ours today!

  • her vaults were very easy but back then. they vaulted on pommel horses, plus her form was perfect

  • She was fourth...:(

  • yea, but back then that kind of stuff was pretty hard and there vaults weren't as amazing as todays!

  • I think she ended up fifth--Nelli and Ludmilla were 1st and second, an East German 3d, and Teodora 4th

  • No she ended 4th. Nelli 1st, Ludmila 2nd and the East German 3d. There was no tie for 1st, look the medal presentation is in youtube somewhere.

  • An awful lot of people commenting on here know jack shit about gymnastics history....if they did then they would know how much gymnasts today are aided by equipment!!! i.e they would be doing "just this and that" probably!!!

  • Wasn't the vault her only event at the '76 olympics that she didn't medal on?

  • Yes

  • what was her score

  • like a 9.85

  • what happened on the 2nd vault? did she drop out?

  • It's a handspring with a full turn. Besides the hop, nothing wrong with it.

  • i performed that same vault in level 8 last year!!! It seems crazy how much gymnastics changes over the years!

  • i know i preformed it in level 8 only it was tucked

  • nadia is from romania...

  • this is awesome. i love this video. we ( laura and lisa ) are level 4s and we look up to Nadia as our role model. ( even though she's from Russia )

  • ohh you! how can yo say nadie comaneci, the great nadia comaneci is from Russia!! omg! thats is incredible

  • duh everyone knows shes romanian. a fron HS half and half on pike of is so easy. i cant beleive it. look how much gymnastcis has changed.

  • I wonder how easy the Tsuk vault would be to teach today with the equipment they had back then?

  • i hav that vault in my gym, and we do not work on tsuks or anything like that

  • She's Romanian

  • wow those vaults are like level 6 vaults these days... havent times chagned

  • isnt that the truth! i wish i was in gymnastics back then

  • i was watching a 60's gym montage earlier and all she done in the olympics was a half on and that was that!!!!

  • I remember doing that second vault in the 90's! hahaha! yeah, I sucked!

  • Don't forget how it was back then. They didn't have the same materials we do have now! We have a lot of extra things, so don't just think it was easy for them to do things like that... they didn't have advanced training or materials!

  • that is a very good point actually. I didn't see it like that, i took for granted the ultra sophisticated material we have now... which propulses the gymnast in the air better as well as absord the shock of landing, so less injuries etc ...

  • yeah that vault wasn't amazing, but I bet you couldn't dream of doing anything related to her two uneven bars routines or her floor work.

  • FX yes, a double twist or double tuck isnt hard nowadays with the special floors we got. But probably not back in the day with their equipment, and forget her UB skills, i wouldnt even dream of doing anything that cool.

She used to do hindorff and comaneci's so beautifully and effortlessly, which are still E skills today!

  • That vault WAS amazing for it's day-few women were doing Tsukaharas even at the 1976 Games. Nelli Kim did the first full twist Tsuk at those Olympics, Nadia and Tourischeva did Tsuk variations-but most of the women were doing half twists on, half off or some variation of handsprings like the Yamashita. This was really the first Olympics where somersaulting vaults were done by women and it was revolutionary for its day-and awesome due to their old time equipment none of which was springloaded.

  • Her floor work actually wasn't all that great, her bars and BEAM work was great though.

  • @gymnasticsloverxoxo Nadia was one of the very first to compete a double back ... unfortunately she could not show it in Montreal due to an ankle injury. She also had ended with a double twist after starting with a double back, so I would say she was a good floor worker.

  • @MeanestCoachEver Maria Filatova competed double backs before her.
