I think I'd find this all a bit too disheartening, though. After the first letdown, I couldn't bring myself to dive straight back in and set myself up for another potential fall. I'd lose faith very quickly. But don't get me wrong, I totally understand the predicament you're in and why you have to resort to this. Like you said, it's just a sorry state of affairs that we live in a society where this is the only option left for a lot of people.

I spent much of my youth trying to find the right guy. You may find that the search is neverending, especially if you have any standards. I would suggest to you to focus on making yourself successful and ready for the right guy whenever he comes along... have something to offer and seal the deal.
