  • Zero, I think the reason you are getting arcing from diode to ground is that when the diode turns off the field around the heater coil collapses and you get high voltage that has to go somewhere. What do you think?

  • your right! if a coild loses its current then the magnetic field it created will dissipate, and the change in magnetic field (flux) can create a current in metals, and potential differences, and arcs.

  • Can I ask a very basic question? How come the gas is referred to as "HHO", aka "Brown's gas"?

    It is really 2 x H2 + O2, right? You electrolyze the water with AC, producing a dangerous explosive 2H2 + O2 gas mixture. Wouldn't it be better to electrolyze the water with DC, and only combine the H2 and O2 gases when you want to burn them or put them in a fuel cell? That would make the experiments a lot safer.

  • The bolt in the diode is connecting to the wall of the hole. Trill the hole so large that it does not happen any more... What you actually need is a hole insulator which also goes into the hole (don't know the english word for that).

    What I would do... I would not insulate the diode... I would insulate the heat sink, that is often more easy and since you have the box anyway, it does not matter.

  • There is a hole insulator too. 5/16" OD, 1/4" ID. I know how to properly mount semiconductors.

  • The green wire is the grounding wire for the equipment.

    The white wire is the grounded wire for carrying current.

    The black wire is the ungrounded wire for carrying current.

    The diode should be placed in the white wire part of the circuit because there is no electrical potential there. The white and green wire are connected to the same buss bar in the circuit breaker box(distribution panel)

  • No, it's safer to leave the white neutral at ground potential and rectify the hot even at the expence of added insulation between the rectifier and ground.

    The equipment is grounded and electrically the same as the white wire...

    You are mounting the black wire(the hot to ground wire) on the grounded box!

    Since the white wire has no potential to ground, it will not short. The fact that you are shorting to ground proves it is a bad wiring design.

  • Always cool vids, I know electric space heaters are about 1500 watts and some have low med high. I aught to take mine apart and see whats inside, been looking for something to try the new camcorder on!

  • Hoax I use a 50 amp triac and a var resistor to control big loads like a light dimmer does. Was gona put up a vid on that.

  • I get my PWM's from portable drills. Basically cost the same but you get free batteries!

  • Not to be critical but over time i think the rectifier will get to hot with out an aluminum heat sink directly attached to it. Be careful the mica is going to insulate the rectifier and it will get so hot it will fail. If the load is large enough.

  • Not to be critical but heat transfer is what the mica insulators were designed for. That's why I'm using thermal compound and drawing any excess heat away to the metal case.

  • Zero! So glad it's warm enough for you to come out and play again! Are you trying to replicate some of mdbreedi's stuff? His spark was running about 180VDC, and the wall outlet is 120 VAC RMS whcih would be around 177 PEP. With some caps, you should be able to get around 160VDC with a full wave rectifier. What I'm seeing is a diode without filtering, powering a resitive load in the tea kettle - what are you up to?!?

  • Up to? The box you see is just the world's simplest PWM. The pot boils quickly but too violent when it gets to temp. The box is to cut back on the heating element when it gets to temp.

    What will I do with the steam? Well, you're going to have to be patient.

  • Why not just use a humidifier to produce the steam? you can regulate the steam on the unit???
