It would not be impossible for the blades to physically collide. Everything is made up of light/sound at varying frequencies. If the back of my hand collides with Michios face....both my hand and his face are made of light/sound, yet due to the specific information energies they are imbued with, a btich-slap, crying and a bruise are caused. All you'd have to do is make sure that the sabers were on a channel where they burn through most everything but their own vibrational frequencies. Simple. ;)

red sith lightsabers do use synthetic crystals. Natural crystals are supposed to make a better sabre though.

In STAR TREK, this technology has been used since the first ideas of the show. Light makes excelent beam and/or pulse weapons as there is almost no recoil. Antimatter/matter suspended electomagnetically in a case of high strenth alloy material with a plasma magnetoplasmadynamic thrusting system will be much more effective at destroying target. Make it any size you want: to make it explode just release the electromagnetic fields

That laser thing wouldn't be lightsaber, but it would be an excellent weapon anyway. That, if altered correctly to emit a pulsed beam, would be an effective and efficient laser firearm.

Rather than a lightsaber, you'd have a "blaster" or laser pistol. Not what you'd want in a sword duel, but perfect for everything else.
