  • do puffers do good with bettas? or did you just get lucky I got a 10gal with a realy sweet betta that was bff with a platty tell she ate 1 of his pellets choked to death, now hes alone and almost seem depressed and missis his friend, i wana get him a new buddy and a puffer would be sooo dope

  • @whiteboypatrickkelly No they don't, I had them together for about 2 weeks before I was able to put the puffer in his proper home. If they had stayed together for a long period then the likelihood is that the puffer would have nipped the betta's fins a lot. I wouldn't advise it.

  • You shouldn't have a puffer and a siamese in the tank together. Puffers are naturally agressive, and will nip the fins of your fighter.

  • @Tybaltveria Agreed. The video is 4 years old they spent like 2 weeks together.

  • @tuneman69 Ah, ok. :D

  • Does the puffer bite your betta?

  • @HoppyfishPerse001 the chances are that they would have done if they'd been left together permanently.

  • THanks for the comments - I was going to add some dwarf puffers in with my female betta because my tank developed a snail infestation. But if they are indeed agressive towards bettas, I won't. I'll just put my betta in another tank and boil everything to get rid of the snails/eggs. Boiling water and bleach is the only way ... grrr.

  • Did you have any success keeping the puffer and betta together? I have a 5 gallon and would love to keep a better and a dwarf puffer together!

  • and why did you put a slow swimming long finned fish in with a puffer? if may be small but its still mean

  • does ur puffer bites the betta fish's fin? coz mine does.

  • @miki4yang What the hell are you doing keeping your betta in with puffers?!?

  • your betta is beautiful! Is this a vailtail?? That Fins are soooo long...

  • So yea.. I had a pygmy/dwarf puffer and a betta housed in a 10 gallon tank with a divider in the middle. One day while I was gone at class, Gimli the puffer decided to pay Beowulf the Betta a visit and jumped the divider. When I arrived back at my dorm, the only thing left of Gimli was scraps of skin stuck to the plants and filter. OM NOM NOM Good thing you separated the two lol

  • bettacare101. com

  • holy crap that puffer is super tiny. i thought they wud b big 4 some reason....

  • Hence the DWARF in the title. They can get massive.

  • I JUST LOVE TO SEE BETAS BE ACTIVE

  • is that salt water lol how long did it live for

  • wats the name of the type of betta fish that fish

  • halfmoon

  • Are any of you're puffers still alive now ? My tank is 30 gallons, 4 pygmy puffers and 2 otto's. Is there anything else I could add to my tank ?

  • I brought 7 small apple snails. My adult sailfin molly gave birth to around 50-60 fry, I am maybe going to feed most of them to my puffers. I don't really want more. Because I have 4 adult females always giving birth.

    Thanks!

  • Np, Good size tank. Oto's are good choice tankmates,it's hard to find tankmates for them, ur best bet are fast fish w/out long flowing fins. Some people had luck w/ kuhli loaches.

My puffer (Orchid) is still alive, I feed frozen bloodworms twice a day.

  • They need more than bloodworms to keep their teeth filed down. Shell on shrimp and krill, snails, cockles, mussels, clams, etc.

  • @JoseDepacos

I don't think a Dwarf Puffer can eat all those, mayb ur referring to bigger puffers. Dwarf puffers just suck the snails out of their shell unless the snail is the size of their eye.

DP has less beak overgrowing problems compares to other puffers, if their beak ever gets too long I'll find a way to trim it.

  • I have 4 Pygmy puffer fish. I had 6 but the man gave us 2 unhealthy skinny fish. They died about 1 week after. I have 4 healthy puffers. I think 1 male and 4 females. How long will they live for ? What size tank do you have ? What do you feed yours ? I have had mine for about 1 month and a bit.

    Please Help!

  • They live up to 5+ years, heavily planted tank would be best, suppose to be 5 gallon per 1 puffer coz they're messy fish. Overfiltration is adviced. They like live foods like bloodworms/snails/shrimp. Or frozen foods like bloodworms are good too. Good Luck!

  • Also they need a cycled tank, they're very sensitive to ammonia and nitrite.

  • Nice fish, I have them together too 4now. My Dwarf Puffer gets out of the way when my Male Betta swims by, I think he wants to nip at my Betta's tail, but my betta turns around and charges him. Puffer swims away.

I have 2 CT, 1 VT, 1 HM only the halfmoon is scared of my puffer. My puffer's with the VT right now but my CT's are more agressive. puffer is 3/4 full grown tho, so that might change.

  • thats really neat that they get along ...ive got my IDP with a few odd fish aswell i have a african spined eel a rainbow shark 2 odessa barbs 2 long fin zibra daios 3 cory cats a farllawella and a spotted pleco take a look at my tank ill post a vid

  • I put one of those Siamese in wth my 2 dwarf puffers, and straight away they went for its fins ended up netting the siamese straight back out, have you not had problems, these cute little puffers are not really communal as I found out!

  • Ur Tank Looks Like Tha Tank In Finding NeMO XD

  • thanks ya.

  • love ur fighting fish. how much it cost? how long can they live?

  • veitails cost around $4 depending on where you buy them. They can live up to 4 years with proper care

  • really?..here in the philippines veiltails have gone a bit out of fashion and can be bought at a very cheap P20..which is roughly 40 cents..and look like the one in the video..even better..you just gotta have a good eye..

  • cost about £4, he lived for nearly 2 years in my care

  • @TYL32 they cost 1.99$

  • yeah..what kind of betta is that. thing is huge

  • that looks to be an adult veitail

  • lol talk about ego

  • GOD! i've seen those siamese ones before , never knew they could grow that big :C!

  • hey wat kind of betta is that???

  • i have 7 fish Blinky, fishy, elmo, lil tink, pushy, hidy, and bubble gum.

  • he was a tiny little puffer. is it much larger now?

  • not a thing happned ::?

  • Good you putted them apart.... The betta has such a nice tail, the puffer would have ruined it...

  • poor guy. how much wuz that thing $100?? it got eaten

  • They are like 2 bucks XD

  • pygmies are fresh water, some other puffers are fresh/brackish

  • @tuneman69 They're ALL at LEAST brackish water, and most are full on marine. None are freshwater. Unless you don't mind buying new ones every other month.

  • @LimeJello7 ...Dunno if my last post got deleted (I hit "post" and it just sorta vanished hehe), but, yeah, dwarf puffers are freshwater.

  • @tuneman69 Do your research before insulting others! The Dwarf Puffer IS a FRESHWATER Puffer.

  • like tuneman said, dwarf puffers are freshwater

  • most puffers are freashh mate x

  • Idiot.

  • most dwarf puffers have a curious personality and what happend wit them they should of gotten together if the puffer was a dwarf the 2 fish are moderatly agressive fish and they should of just gottten along if there was a nuetral fish in the tank but if was just both of them then they probally got territorial still why did u seperate them?

  • i'm pretty surprised the puffer hasn't nipped off bits of that beautiful tail. my brother is keeping an aquarium and one of his puffers practically bit off the entire tail of a bumblebee goby in the same tank. it's dead now :( xP

  • he was a juvenile puffer so wasn't at all aggressive while he was in with the betta

  • What size tank are they in

  • looks like an average walmart better, nothing special.

  • i'm suprised it doesnt pick at the betta's fins, the puffer that is

  • it was so small it might as well be a tadpole

  • omg i want a dwarf puffer fish sooo bad!!!!!

  • They're a pain in the ass to feed. They won't touch flakes. They only eat live or frozen.

  • ahaha funny , but now you know :P

  • I Had 2 Spotted Pufferfish In A Ten Gallon Tank (Before You Start Criticizing Me They Were Under An Inch And I Had No Intention On Leaving Them In There As They Matured). They Were Pretty Okay Together Minus The Occasional Nip To A Fin Over Food, Well One Died Of Unknown Causes And Do To Space Issues We Relocated It Into Our 20 Gallon Community Tank, That Didn't Last Long. Every Day Another Fish Had Frayed Fins. These Fish ARE NIPPERS. I Don't Care What Walmart Says About How Community They Are!

  • GSPs need 30 gallons each and need high BW-Full marine watr.

    Definitely not a community fish

  • Oh I beg to differ. I Have A Gsp puffer living with another gsp puffer and 3 corys, so it actually depends on their personality. (yes! some fish DO have personality!).

  • Yes and clearly puffers are loaded with personality.

GSP's do fine in FW and even other fish at first, but as they start to grow they need higher salinity and can(as most do) be come pretty damn aggressive.

  • I guess it depends on the puffer you get!

  • The betta is beautiful!

  • Do you know about how old your Beta is? He's gorgeous and looks very big. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thank goodness they're not together anymore, those little puffers can be really nippy. Wouldn't want to ruin those beautiful halfmoon fins.

  • How does your puffer get along with your betta? I know dwarf puffers can be rather nippy, especially with slower moving pish like bettas.

Totally cute lil guy tho. SQUEE i love DP's. They Own.

  • they were together for about a week and a few days and got on fine because the puffer was still fairly young, then i moved him into a separate tank before he could eat the bettas fins!

  • My puffer kept attacking the other puffers, so I put him in my betta tank and the Betta WENT TO TOWN on him. I finally had to move the puffer back to the old tank so he wouldn't get stressed or die. He doesn't pick on the other puffers anymore

  • lol guess it needed a good ass kickin!

  • ha ha ha that's HILARIOUS. Yeah...bettas can be horribly mean. Best to keep males by themselves:) Yeah i had a molly that was being mean to one of my clowns, so i removed him and converted him to freshwater with an angelfish 3 times his size...they get along fine and now my clowns are safe:D

  • if i was that puffer i wouldnt cuz those bettas are dicks lol one killed my columbian shark

  • they are indeed very agressive , you sould put them with neon terta's

  • columbian sharks grow huge and need at least brackish water to live a full healthy life.

  • the dwarf puffers do puff up but only maybe once or twice in a life time, if atll, they often puff up when they are out if water tho which is bad becaues then some of thier organs fill up with air and they need to be put back in water very quickly if they are to survive.

  • yeah you're right, i remember hearing something about how if they puff up full of air then sometimes they can't get the air out so they float and obviously starve and die.

  • thanks

  • do freshwater puffer fish actually puff up or not and i like ur tank thanks

  • no i don't think they do puff up, the pygmy puffers are too small for it to actually scare anything away! i don't know about any other freshwater puffers though

  • Yes all puffers are capable of puffing up (hence the name puffer fish)

even dwarves do, they look like little spiky ping pong balls when they do.

  • actually, pygmy puffers don't have spikes. puffer is a name applied to the family of fish (i.e. cichlid, tetra etc) which doesn't mean they all puff up. these little ones are so small i doubt there'd be any point in puffing up because you wouldn't notice

  • All puffers have spikes, though most the time you can't see them, on occasion you will notice certain pimply esque things on the dp, those are where it's spikes are.

And yes they do have the ability to puff up, I have seen my puffed, and pictures of others puffed

  • Actually the common name puffer usually refers to the tetradonite family, they have a particular toxin inside them, making most puffer fish poisonous to eat.

  • do freshwater puffer fish actually puff up or not and i like ur tank thanks

  • housing a dwarf puffer with a betta is a bad decision. They may be compatible for now but sooner or later your puffer will be chompin on the bettas fins! Take your betta out and put him in a nice 1.5- 2gallon tank with some red cherries; he'll be a lot happier. Bettas prefer small habitats; they live in the rice paddies of thialand.

  • don't worry he's had his own tank for nearly a year now and he's loving it!

  • Shit, that looks exactly like my betta... except my cat went fishing and now his back fin is kinda torn... ffs.. i hope it grows back

  • i wonder who would have won though....

  • Kool ive got 5 pygmy puffers in my tank and they are all so cool

  • Very beautiful long finned Betta.

  • My Betta fish comited suicide...he jumped out of the fish bowl (ass hole) I want get betta and see who would win..lol kinda mean but aw well

  • Bettas are known to be jumpers. That was kind of your fault - you should've had a cover on the bowl/tank. Also, your betta may have been alive -- they are capable of breathing air. You should've put him back in the fish bowl to see if he was still alive.

  • The siamese fish in Malaysia call Ikan Laga = or fighting fish.Last time most people buy this fish and try to match with others. And as far as i know, the siamese fighting fish that very dangerous(I mean who always won) is the fish that u can find it in a rice field(hard to describe) and its white colour.

  • lol, the funny thing is, you have to be worried about tyson, lol, the little puffs are known to beat up the big giant fish, i had one kill my gourami! nasty little things, but such darlings with AWESOME personalities, best fish ever

  • rotfl, the puffers like im ok, i didnt even want it! *turns and swims off*

  • u got a nice puffer fish.....

  • WoW that Siamese fighting fish looks beautiful! i was thinking of getting one my self

  • isn't that a tadpole?

  • wow its not a tadpole its a puffer lol

  • i dont even think tadpoles are taht large

  • lol! they do kind of look like tadpoles!

  • it looks like a baby frog!

    tapole?

  • it was a young puffer at the time and i moved it out of the tank before he did any damage

  • I thought puffers are salt water?? how does it lie with a fighter???

  • some are blackrish water fishes...salt or fresh water

  • the pygmy puffers are all fresh water puffers

  • i like fighting fishes tails

  • what type of betta is he?

  • standard betta splendens

  • OMG!!! He is SOOOO PRETTY!!! SOOO PRETTY!!!... I'm touched by his beauty and colors

  • i will pay good money to see that shit fight

  • that Siamese Fighting Fish is absolutesly lush

  • lol lil puffer

  • your not supposed to keep any other type of fish in a tank with a dp, with the exception of a few. i would move them immediately.

  • it was in that tank for about a week, temporary arrangement, it wasn't a problem

  • aren't puffers saltwater fish?

  • yeah most of them are salt or brackish but pygmy puffers are fresh water

  • I was wondering, if you go on vacation do have a food you can leave in aquarium or auto feeder to feed beta.

  • There are such things as '7 Day Betta Blocks.' You put them in the tank with the little bugger and it will feed them 7-10 days depending on the PH level of your water and temperature.

  • People whom has used them tell me that they make the tank cloudy. Have got suggestions to use automatic feeder or don't feed them. Automatic feeder uses flake food and it can cause betta to get constipated.

  • Yeah the Yellow and Orange ones will make it cloudy. I've found that the blue ones don't really effect it as much.

  • u would need brackish water for a green puffer

  • this isnt a green puffer its a dwarf/pygmy puffer for only freshwater

  • Which is a better pet, the puffers or a betta ? i want to get one but im not sure as i hear puffers are very messy and i dont no if i hav the correct equipment for them.

  • puffers are cool, but messy and fussy, my betta literally eats anything and tries to eat my hand if i have it in the water, its always at the front of the tank demanding attention so i prefer the betta myself

  • Betta's are VERY low maintenance.

Puffer fish I have no idea.

  • id go with the puffer...even though they are messy all fish eats which makes them all messy no matter what...for the equipment you just need the best filter you can afford and a heater and atleast a 10 gallon for those puffers...or more...

  • that betta is Gorgeous

  • Glad to hear it! Much more enjoyment for you for much longer from both fish now =) I just love my dwarf puffers. You can keep them in groups just fine if you have the room and some hiding places. What do you feed yours? I'm curious...I can't get mine to eat anything at all besides live worms.

  • i had the same problem when i first got him, really fussy. i allowed some snails to live in my tank and he happily hunts and eats them all day, so keeps the snail outbreaks to a minimum. if i dont feed him for a couple of days he'll eat frozen worms happily. but generally its live food and snails. how many do you keep? ive just got the one but i'm tempted to get a green spotted puffer, bit bigger!

  • Gorgeous fish- but the puffer is going to eat the fins off the betta =( Mine did when I tried that...I learned the hard way.

  • yeah i know, was only a temporary arrangement so the puffers on his own now, luckily without too much fin damage!
