Thanks very much for this clip, which shows to me why you can't have The Shadows without Bruce Welch and his rhythm guitar! Nice sound that Burns-Marvin's got though!
The Shadows were formed from members of several late 1950s UK skiffle groups: The Newcastle-based "Railroaders" (and also The Five Chesternuts on Columbia Records) who supplied Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch, both inspired by USA-pop music;
@Kovven Try looking up "Brian Bennett Drum Solo" on YouTube. I tried to post a link but they won't allow it - there you will see him playing a HUGE drum kit!
@atombomb31458 Except the Shadows started before the Ventures so it would be more correct to call them the American Shadows :-) Although The Shadows were way more succesful than the Ventures, they did cover Walk Don't Run, and I think both groups liked each other.
Nice Version ! But I miss Bruce here ! although This version of Shadows was great with Alan Hawkshaw , and it was different as well. alan Should Have styed , when bruce welch returned. He is the Greatest keyboard player the shads ever had! A Faboulus Musician!
Bruce Welch had left The Shadows at this stage due to health reasons and was replaced by Alan Hawkshaw on Piano/ Keyboard for most of '69/'70. He appeared on "Live in Japan" and 1970's " Shades of Rock" albums.
Because his girlfriend of the time , Olivia Newton John, had left him which even nearly drove him to take his own life....thankfully he recovered to make some great albums with Marvin, Welch and Farrar.
Because his girlfriend of the time , Olivia Newton John, had left him which even nearly drove him to take his own life....thankfully he recovered to make some great albums with Marvin, Welch and Farrar.
who cares what he looks like if he produces the sounds he has for 50 years, and given pleasure to millions, and inspired some of the greatest musicians alive today, including Mike Oldfield and countless others, the music is what matters and the love it builds
This version of "Wonderful land "by the Shadows suits perfectly for the tempoand the feeling of the music and differs from all the rest played by them which are too fast. Too bad is cut half way !
Another version I loved is from Mike Oldfield with the solo guitar intro !
the ventures are great on the surf stuff. but they are no match for the shadows. the shads are simply in a class of there own 50 yers in the buiseness says it all. simply the best
I'd always been a huge Ventures fan and wasn't aware of these guys until a few months ago. Talk about good "Guitar Porn"! I love seeing all of their guitars especially the old 60's Fenders. o.k. I'm a guitarist and I'm sick, but anyone else out there like me understands.
Wonderful Land on the record (No 1 eight for weeks)was played on a strat not a burns.During this period The Shadows were sponsered by Burns. The Guitar is a "Burns Marvin" and is available again under a different name
There were pleanty of "Burns Marvin" guitars evident at last weekend's "Shadowfest" - including being on display at the Burns stall. Maybe Barry Gibson is confused :-)
You mention Hendrix. I have always been mystified over his status obviously stemming from the USA. I saw Hendrix play live on three occasion, two in US and one in UK.
Your view would differ from Eric Clapton's then! The first time he saw Hendrix play he turned to Roger Daltry and said: "I'm off home to practice !!!"
Played too slow. It drags. I've seen another clip where they played this one live in the Sixties, Hank with this Burns guitar, and that was too slow too. Awful. And where's Bruce Welch? This is more like the theHank Marvin Slowhand Band!
Those Baldwin/Burns guitars just don't sound as good as a Strat. They just sound cheap, just listen to the rich 3D tone Hank gets when he plays this tune on his Strat! Also good to see a young Cliff Hall on piano, I see him gigging around the Old Kent Road, he don't look like that anymore :o)
This is Hank B.Marvin and his backing band,it does'nt feel like a group thing e.g The Shadows and something has been lost because of it, amd that's not just Bruce Welch either.
Yeah, it's like viewing a ripped in half Mona Lisa, or waking up and finding that a large proportion of your body has been torn off as you slept! Well, not quite, but I know what you mean, and why you profaned i.e. the oh sh*t bit. D*mn!, why can't I swear on youtube. Oh dear, oh de*r! Oh h*ll!
Not a great live sound! probably the miking! this was when Bruce had left the band and Alan Hawkshaw was playing keyboard, not the best combination (sorry Alan!) Still love the Burns though (This Baldwin badge one was stolen out of the van early 71) never seen since! shame check out Hanks solo album around this time, The burns sounds great!
As much as it is interesting to see them from this period, I must say that this sound is definitely not THE SHADOWS sound. I don't like how W. land sounds here
