  • Please, please could someone post words to the 2nd verse on the record?

The 2nd may be an adaptation of the first by Harty or did Shadwell write two verses? It seems to begin:

'Nymphs and Shepherds pipe and play...'.

This may be from a verse added [why?] by W.G. Rothery that begins:

Twine ye garlands red and white,

pipe and dance till fall of night

It doesn't seem to fit the 2nd verse on the record .

I always want to sing along, can you help?

  • I don't know if anyone has heard about it, but there is a show written by Victoria Wood at the Manchester Opera House this month based on this event. There is a lot of artistic liscence, but that's expected from a drama production. I'm playing in the orchestra pit for it, and it's been a great experience. I've enjoyed researching the actual story and enjoyed reading the little stories from people like yourselves =]

  • My aunt, Ada Riley, sang on this record and we used to have a copy when I was young. It was 12 inches, larger than the average 78, but sadly it suffered the same fate as most of this type. My aunt died in 1989.

  • This will be Day 29 in my 30 Day Song Challenge on facebook. I have the original 78 and I can still play it on my Thorens 124 MK 2. I mention the record player to make people jealous. But what beautiful music compared to today.

  • I think this record must be one of my earliest recollections of music having an impact on me. I was born in 1943 but have no idea how old I was when I first heard this obviously the radio. X

  • My mother, Milly Schwarz who sadly passed away three months ago aged 96, was a chorist on this original recording. I love it and am very proud. Susan Schwarz.

  • I remember singing in the choir at the town hall in Birmingham, and this was one of the songs that we sang in the 1950's

  • @judysturgess Sorry it must have been 1979 not 1975

  • @judysturgess You must quite rightly be very proud of your Mother. As a child of 5 or 6 I used to visit a cousin who played this recording all the time. I've loved it ever since. I remember in 1975 they celebrated the 50th anniversary of the recording interviewing many of the original performers.

    Thankyou for sharing your memories

  • Bloody marvellous! Nuff said.

  • My mum was a choir member. She was 13 when it was recorded in 1929. She passed away in 2009 aged 93. One of the boys, Stanley Rose was the main mover in organising the 50th anniversary re-union in 1979 and he wrote the booklet. As many of the original choir as they could find took part in rehearsals and sang again with the Halle. They even had original choir mistress Gertrude Riall there (she was in her 90s). Granada TV made a 1- hour documentary covering the build up to the repeat performance

  • I love singing it and my twins will be singing it in their singing exam next week. More children should sing it in schools. Pity that you have to pay school fees these days to ensure children are exposed to some music as if there is now dumbing down in the state sector. If my mother (a wonderful singer) could teach classes of 40 in very rough parts of the North East good music I do not see what is so difficult about doing so in state schools in 2010.

  • My mum, Beatrice Garner, was a member of the choir.

  • Happy Happy memories ....thank you!!!

  • Being born in the early 50's I can still remember music like this being sung at school. It is an era that, unfortunately, is long gone. So wonderful to hear these old tunes.

  • Thank you for your comments and I hope you will have seen the other many touching comments by others some who remember it and others who are just impressed by the quality of the singing. Someone also wondered if any of the choir were still alive. I think the original 78 adds warmth of tone to the recording too personally!

  • @derekermanshah This is very lovely. We went to the Victoria Wood play yesterday and was very moving. Is this recording available to buy on CD anywhere? I would love to buy it for my 90 year old Mum who came with us.

  • Lovely, thank you for posting.

  • Magic.

  • So lovely. When I was at school in the 1930s, this was played in the assembly hall every Christmas during the Carol Service. Our wonderful headmistress always always arranged a collection at Christmas for poor children - and there were, sadly, lots in those pre-WW2 days.

  • Thanks for the lovely memory. I am not old enough to remember that but, being born in the 1960s am just old enough to remember 78rpm records, some of which my parents had when I was little, and there was one music teacher who still played them in our assembly hall at primary school when I was about 10 circa 1970!

  • Delightful.

  • Viva Manchester!

  • wow.. they're really good and for a choir this could very easily be a disaster piece and it sounds like the whole choir's all on the mark and together.

  • This is the best choir music I have heard in my sixty two years, I lived in Manchester and my mother born in 1918 told me about this song.

I wonder if any of the choir are still alive?

  • @jahoppy - Yes! My grandmother is still alive, 97 today in fact. She was one of the choir in this recording.

  • wonderful
