However I worked for a military contractor designing communication systems; and dealt with every rank from every branch.

First of all my condolences to the family. I have been a Marine since 1972 (Honorably discharged in 1976). Technically, the 21 gun salute is reserved for heads of states only. (Presidents, kings, etc.). An enlisted Marine rates a 3 gun salute but ,tradition has taken over and allows the 21 gun salute. The usual way is 7 rifles, 3 volleys, fired simultaneously. This video shows the precision Marines can do this. It looks and sounds like one shot 3 times. Semper Fi brothers and sisters.
I'll never forget when they brought him back to the train station. They told him not to look around that corner, but he did anyway, and took two rounds from an AK in the face. He should have stayed with H&S and never even been there... I use Sgt Burgess as a cautionary tale to all my boots about doing as you're told and not fighting like its a fucking video game.. Any Marines out there that read this will know what i'm saying.

@robby844 No, there is a difference. It's a shame that even our military servicemen don't know the difference. A 21 gun salute is one gun, usually artillery, fired 21 times. Look at the video if Obama's inauguration. There's a part where there is one gun firing 21 times. This is a 7 gun volley in this video. 21 gun salutes are used almost exclusively for presidential inaugarations and funerals.
