The wooden block thing is traditional back from the days when it was more difficult to record drums. A lot of 'old time' recordings, 20's, 30's?, used wooden blocks instead of drums to set the pace. It's still annoying though. The Lap Steel needs to be up in the mix more as well. Just my opinion, my 1/1000th of a cents worth.
