Status Quo, a legendary one off band. From the psycodelic late sixties, through the golden 70's era to the crap 80s covers, they still rolled on. Still going today, you will notice Andy Bown who was the uncredited 5th member of quo [keyboards], he is there from the beginning and these days actually comes out on stage to play guitar. I just watched a fairly recent version of Gerundula, still fantastic. The 4 guitarists in line, Rossi,Parfitt,Bown, and Rhino.[25 years in the band]
@Meadoway40 The keyboardplayer here in this vid isn't Andy Bown. It is Roy Lynes. Lynes left the band soon after Quo switched to a more blues type of music and before the real fame. Andy Bown first did some things for Quo , I believe, on the Hello album and became a permanent member somewhere around the late 70's, in the periode when Quo made the RAOTW album.

Anyone happen to know what Fuzz pedal Francis used to create that raspy psychedelic tone? It seems very unique to the Quo and this particular track/album. As a guitarist I`m very curious!!
Maestros were the state of the art at the time. Sounds like one here(?)The 'Hello I Love You' / Incense & peppermints clean violin fuzz sound. I had a little gray box called a 'Fuzz King' with its own little attached input cable that ate batteries in a minute. Prolly worth a fortune now...Cool flanged mix here starting around 0:28 G'day
Definitely heavily soaked in the trappings of its era, ie: flanging, heavy reverb/echo, etc.
I know this is not the "trendy and hip" thing to say but this song sounds like the cutting room floor elements of "Pictures of Matchstick Men" slammed together to get a next single out quick.
That being said its a decent song in its own right, but they should have produced it with a different feel from "matchstick". ie cut out the trendy flanging and tsunami reverb, do a more straight ahead version.
Api, good spots...you're absolutely correct. Right off the bat the you notice the near identical progressions but I nearly choked @ 1:15 of black veils of melancholy when they play the alternate pseudo Pictures of Matchstick men riff...wow that takes some balls! lol.
In all fairness the label probably pushed hard for new material that wasn't there...and well this is the result.
Interesting you say that - this was pressed for release but was quickly withdrawn. Copies cost a mint. Also, this version is now rare. On compilations and re-releases it has far less obvious phasing. Still sounds great.
Yeah man! One of my favourite tunes ever, grew up with this on "golden hour of" tape...So, which is the best Quo? This early psychedelia, "dog" era, early vertigo, '74-5 fame, or finally blue for you/live? (anything after is lame, too much coke or that crap producer) Personally, I'd go for the Pye stuff as their peak..check out April, Spring, Summer and Wednesdays...or Need your Love...they were PUSHING IT back then, knao wot i mean?
this piece of music is lasting 215, but it leaves the impression of 3 05 minutes. It´s packed with musical information and cleverly constructed parts. the bridge is great, good singing, very clos to pictures of matchstick man, sound filters and a pumping bass, very tight sound early compressors maybe. good composition. Great Band.
What the fuck GOBSHITES you are joking arnt u im sure rhino and matt and andy are much better musicians then u are and to be quite honest songs that they have writ are very good for example andy writ whatever you want yeah so i think maybe u should listen to some live quo!
For fuck's sake, get back on the bandwagon. Neither Alan nor John would leave the band for another 15 years from this video, and the current 'gobshites' are doing a bloody good job keeping the legacy alive. If you're going to pull the 'this was Quo in MY day' bollocks, at least find a song they wrote or even wanted to play. We're not here for a musical cockfight, but if you want to sound like someone's dad at least do it properly.
I luv psych Quo. Mr Mind Detector eat your heart out. A fine band down the years.

What a great song, nice melodies, dreamy vocals, lots of reverb. I love "Pictures" but was unfamiliar with this one, indeed same style but I love it.

Surely the next sound-alike single was Black Veils of Melancholy? Exact same song!
There's also a song by the Scottish band Clinic that use that melody.
