  • this is true music!

  • Best thing to watch if stoned.

  • I must just be honest and say that this song is going into what I am. Nobody understood me either as child! Not strange so to speek that I have two sets f children, the two oldest 16, 18 yrs and the two youngest 2 and 3 yrs! My (life-)way is strange.. Yes but even if complex so beautiful ..anyway! Just as the vibraphone solo!

  • Type in MF DOOM STRANGE WAYS to hear how sampling is a good thing!

  • Wow men the intro with the violin begging at 1:00 its so good.

  • What a beautiful tune on so many levels! Love the haunting melody played on the violin.

  • Wow! Prog is so frickin underrated......especially when it's this good!

  • Tra i migliori gruppi "prog-rock"!

  • This drummer is so incredible. They are all incredible.

  • I don't know how I lived before hearing Gentle Giant and the other Progressive Greats.

  • Fun. I discovered this by coincidence. Stumbled over the song 'I lost my head', which I found amusing and now this and it's somehow cool. New experience for my ears, although rather old. :)

  • This was the music of my teens, great to hear its still loved.

  • Long life to all of this guys

  • This guys are true musicians.

  • All compliments are pale for the Giant philharmonic orchestra and the sexiest drummer alive - John Weathers.

  • I love the lighting for this song of the show. The reddish glow is extremely fitting for some reason.

  • Amazing live Performance!! by the Giants of music

  • Amazing, you look away and come back and they're playing a different instrument, that's fucking inspiring.

A lot of people might say it was pretentious, but I think it's only like that if you can't really play the instrument, but these guys can.

  • SHITMAN!!! This is so great. Awesome!

  • I saw these guys live in 73 as the lead in group for Jethro Tull who was my favorite band. I then became a GG nut too!! Saw them again a few months later Ticket were 4.50 US;-)

  • man you're lucky! i love GG and jethro. hell yes brotha!!

  • Minnear is no slouch either what a crazy band they were. .. ...prog-o-lin concerto!

  • RAy Shulman and David Cross (from King Crimson) are the best rock Violinists ever

  • Pleasant pheasant

  • what the hell why did youtube take out Knots!!!???? Hotman1122 bring them back!!

  • you can see the full concert on google video!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • these guys are full of soul

  • YEAH!!!! MADVILLIAN "strange ways" thats a hip hop song that uses this sample.SWEET!!!!

  • 30 years later, it's still a masterpiece, right up there with Siberian Khatru and The Cinema Show.

  • Talk about great bands! When is the lat time you saw a band where everyone played a variety of instruments with such precision like GG? The bass player could be an ensemble by himself...(lol).

  • totally agree man those guys are awsomes musicians they were unique

  • Truly amazing!! Such a shame bands like Gentle Giant aren't acknowledged.

  • There isn't another band that could play this amazing piece of music. Gentle Giant are unique and brilliant, sadly one of the very few 70s prog giants I never saw live. My loss!

  • GG helped us grow a long time ago. I do not forget, forgive, forsake.

    Now lets have fun!!

;D (the vibes and horns too, so fine.)

  • Thanks for posting this....an excellent and often overlooked band. I saw them in 1976....brilliant.This is such a cool song and so well played.

  • Anyway, prog rock is quite a silly tag, invented by the rock press. I was there in the 70s and these groups were simply a bit better than the others, that's all. Gentle Giant and Genesis are as different as Coldplay and The Eagles (If not more different). The so called prog rock bands has only one rule and that's there are no rules.

  • I think you are over simplifying things a bit(I was there too. I played fo a living)

    Here's what I recall:

We did call it Progressive Rock and Classical Rock interchangeably (Where as groups like The New York Rock Ensemble - there's a blast from the past! and The Mothers of Invention were probably closer to Progressive Rock.

From the musicians I knew across the country, GG was considered a definite step above other Classical Rock bands.

Your Eagles/ Coldplay comment is a bit confusing (?)

  • OK I'm simplyfying things a bit. But when I became a Yes fan in 1971 I had never heard of prog rock. Yes were just a rock band that was better than most other rock bands.

What I meant by the Coldplay/Eagles comment was that bands we usually put in the prog rock box are extremely different.

  • Yeah, that makes sense,

I think the term progressive rock first came to my attention in Time magazine or something, when they were doing a story on the metamorphosis of Rock and mentioned the New York Rock Ensemble. There were so many labels back then - both accurate in inaccurate.

I do recall that the line between styles was pretty well recognized. You'd sometimes see different sections in record stores etc...

an exceptional time in Music history if you ask me, but you didn't of course :-)

  • (continued)

The content and forms of the songs - and definitely the live performance of GG's obtuse angular music proved much more challenging in most cases than the more conventional linear forms:

Yes,Genesis, Tull, ELP, etc... (note: Frank Zappa excepted holy schmoly!)

Gentle Giant was the group you put on to befuddle yourself and you friends after the gig. Not that the others weren't incredible in their own right (Yes: Close to the Edge, Genesis: anything before: And Then There Were 3)

    imho

  • They are doing their thing. Compared to todays music that is being promoted on a mass scale, this music is quality. They are putting out quality vocals and musicially it is quality. Maybe they are not perfect people, but we are not looking for perfection

  • Madvillian sample-strange ways

  • I love this song. People wanna knock gentle giant and to each his own, but why log on to their videos? I'm 28 Habnabit, not some old hippie, but i envy the old hippies that got see this shit live when it was new man.

  • John Weathers is no sasquatch! He is a beautiful young man in this video. :(

  • You have to be two years old to have that knid of logic.

Think outside your mental crib, or at least take your dumps in the bathroom.

You are the same person that says Nothing New Can Be Any Good cause I don't happen to get it.

The only boring thing here is your inability to expand your understanding.

I hope you are still young enough to grow and understand the beauty of things that happened before you were around.

  • Yeah well my favorite all time band would probably be pink floyd and i am into early eighties new wave and shoe gaze music, cure, the ocean blue etc. so i think i have embraced music that was made before my time. love progressive rock but their are some newer bands like radiohead and porcupine tree who have taken prog rock to a new place. gg to me just arent that good compared to all the cool music that is out there.

  • See now that's funny, while I give PF props for inventiveness etc... the were prog rock for the masses (I like alot of their stuff and recognize that they have a wide appeal)They were very cliche at the time.

I'm not very familar with the others that you mentioned, so I can't comment.

You deriding comments are way out of line and display a need to put things you can't appreciate down.

Frankly, It's like a cowboy making fun of fine wine because he dudn't see the whad all da hoopla's about :-)

  • You got that right...But then again...You can't force an opinion to someone, because every man's mind is different. Talking about quality would be something else. Because quality music is a GG trademark.

  • @zeecezzy I can hardly wait for you to tell us what is good contemporary music.

  • @zeecezzy hmmm? pink floyd, zeppelin, micheal jackson, marvin gaye, stevie wonder, genesis and the list can go on forever. Its called good music not pretentious nonsense with no real strucuture like gentle giant's music.

  • Awesome band ....my favorite

  • I used to love these guys when I was a kid. I saw them live in america around '76, Asbury Park Casino. when an amazing show. I wondered if there were videos out there and Hooray! there are a bunch. thanx for posting this eclectic band

  • I love all you Giant fans as much as I love Giant. No bullshit here! Fucking incredible positive vibes.

  • I tried violin for the first time last week, and it's alot harder to play than I thought it was gonna be

  • Ray Shulman and Kerry Minnear are the most underrated musicians ever : /

  • great, nothing more to say

  • This is the most beautyful of their songs!

Who of them is this song made by?

    :-)

  • Goosebumbs......

  • amazing vibes solo and great song

  • Extaordinaire, merveilleux groupe progressif, qui a tracé la route à tout ce que l'on écoute maintenant. Thanks for this video

  • One of my favorite tunes of all time from the most under recognized progressive rock group ever!

  • Quintessential GG. Awesome musicianship and song arrangement. The first really progressive rock group of the seventies. Thanks for the post.
